On the Japanese island of Yakushima, two species（物种）of animals, the macaque monkeys and sika deer, have developed an unusual relationship. Monkeys ride around the island on the deer's backs, smoothing their soft fur as they go. In return, the deer eat fruit left by the monkeys and clean their droppings at night, inadvertently（无意地）cleaning the monkeys' homes. It appears that the two species actively communicate to influence each other's behavior. 

Professor Cédric Sueur, an animal behavior expert at the University of Strasbourg, notes that this action suggests a form of communication. "There' s a kind of watching, thinking or understanding. " he says. While it is common for animals to learn behaviors from members of their own species, Sueur and his partners believe that the behavior of the deer and monkeys shows that social learning can appear across species. They name it as"co-culture". "I think there are a lot of species showing co-culture though we' ve never thought about it before. " says Sueur. 

As their studies get further, more examples of co-culture are noticed. In Yellowstone Park, crows follow grey wolves to find dead animals in the woods during winter. In the Indian Ocean, octopuses and grouper fish have been found hunting together. These suggest that cross-species cultural influence is more widespread than we thought before. 

Professor Jean Leca, an animal expert from Canada, stressed that people used to think animals don't have any culture, but the study shows it is wrong now. "It's very reasonable（合情理的）that different animal species can influence each other in their ways of living and how they see the world. This new idea on animal behavior could change our understanding of the animal kingdom. We should also remember that human behavior might not be the only one of its kind in the world, " he says, "However, more research is needed to fully understand how co-culture develops in the animal world. We scientists must dig deeper to discover the mysteries of it. "

Imagine picking up a new book that you' re excited to read, sitting in your favorite corner, and turning to the last chapter（章节）. While most readers open to page one, there are many people who jump right into the juiciest part of the book——the end, before going back to the beginning and starting from therc. Because that changes the normal experience of reading the book, some people say readers should always begin with the first chapter. Others think starting at the end is perfectly acceptable and may even be the best way to read a book. What do you think? Is it OK to read the last chapter first?

There are many different ways to enjoy a book, and none of them are wrong. Starting with the last pages makes some readers even more curious（好奇的）about the story and helps them decide whether the book is worth reading. Other people don't like to worry about what happens to the characters. Reading ahead helps them relax and appreciate the writing similar to when people reread a book and get more out of it the second time. Some people also enjoy the excitement of guessing exactly how the story will reach an ending they already know. 

However, some people think books are meant to be read in the order in which they' re written. Part of the enjoyment of reading a good book is following the action from start to finish, discovering new information about the story and characters bit by bit, and being surprised by the story. Reading the last chapter first is disrespectful to the writer who put in a lot of effort. And if you know the ending, you have to avoid making other people who are reading it feel terrible. That means it's safer not to discuss it with them, though talking about a book can be a big part of the fun of reading it. 

Paul Salopek, a writer for National Geographic, started a 38, 624-kilometr e journey from the birthplace of humans in Africa in 2013. He planned to hike through the Middle East, Asia, North America hoping to reach South America by 2027. He tries to follow in the footsteps of ancient humans out of Africa and rediscover the planet. 

China is an important stop on Salopek's journey. In 2021, he started his walking in Yunnan. Salopek met people from different ethnic minorities（少数民族）. He was deeply moved by the warmth of the local people, who invited him to their homes and treated him with special food. He tried to learn useful expressions from their languages, but they were too difficult to understand. 

During the walk, Salopek loved the special Yunnan lifestyle. He would spend several days living with a farmer, talking for a long time under a tree. He would stop to film some young men who were building their houses. He was surprised that in the villages, people still use their hands to build houses and roads, making tools for living and farming. He was impressed by how people slowed down and enjoyed their traditional way of life. 

Actually, Salopek is practising slow journalism（新闻工作）along the way, which encourages reporting news with close attention and careful study. "Though technology brings us closer, too much information leaves us little time to think, " said Salopek, "It allows me to make hidden connections that we miss when we travel too fast and catch valuable moments during the journey. "

Salopek is still on the road to uncover the beauty of different cultures. We look forward to seeing what his journey takes him next.

Rock climbing is a dangerous sport, but many people enjoy it. Climbers work out a lot (get) fit, so they can take up this risky sport  (safe).

Host:  So, Tony. when did you first read the book?

Tony: I loved it and thought the ideas about the"Slow Movement" were very interesting. 

Host:  What is the"Slow Movement" exactly?

Tony:Well, today everything is faster than in the past, so the movement is about slowing down and enjoying life.  I love my fast broadband（宽带）, for example. But sometimes it's bad. As the book says, it depends on what you' re talking about. 

Host: 

Tony:Well, you can travel from London to Bruges in just two hours, but do you really enjoy it? I did that journey last year by bicycle. Yes, it was slow, but I met lots of people and saw the beautiful countryside. When I arrived in Bruges, I cycled along the rivers and it was fantastic. 

Host:  Is there anything else that is better if you do it slowly?

Tony:Almost everything. Like food, for example. It's better to go somewhere more traditional, sit down and talk to your friends while you wait half an hour for your food. We don't need to be in a hurry all the time.

When you make a mistake or say something wrong, it's easy to be hard on yourself. With selfcompassion, you can be a friend to yourself instead. 

Self-compassion means giving yourself care and kindness. There are times when being kind to yourself can help—when you mess up or when you' re struggling（努力挣扎）to do something new. Dr Kristin Neff. author of several books on the subject, mentions three secrets to selfcompassion: being kind to yourself, understanding that everyone struggles sometimes and noticing your feelings. 

Self-compassion can reduce stress and ease pain. When you' re kind to yourself, you can relax and be able to think more clearly and see a way forward. Suzy Reading, an expert in thoughts and feelings, says self-compassion helps you be your own friend and feel at peace. "Self-compassion enables you to forgive（原谅）yourself when you do something wrong, helping you learn and grow. " Just as you would be kind to a friend who made a mistake, self-compassion helps you to be a friend to yourself. 

Here are some ways to practice self-compassion. 

●Remind yourself that everyone messes up or struggles sometimes. 

● Notice how you' re speaking to yourself. Suzy suggests talking to yourself using kind words. "Try calling yourself a pet name and see how that helps you choose softer words, " she says. "This is important when you are having a hard time. Kind words help us find solutions and lower stress. "

●Try recognizing the feelings you' re experiencing. When you feel upset, you might feel angry, disappointed, sad or anxious. Name the feeling and tell yourself it's OK to feel this way. 

●Think about how to take care of yourself physically. Give yourself a hug, go for a walk, take a few slow and deep breaths or draw a picture. 

Barbara Watson is 73 years old and lives alone. Barbara had an operation a few months ago. When she came home from the hospital, she couldn't walk or drive a car. Buying food and cooking meals became very challenging for her. Then a friend told Barbara about Meals on Wheels. Now Barbara has a hot lunch delivered（递送）to her house every day. She has a sandwich and salad delivered for dinner, too. 

Meals on Wheels is an organization of volunteers. Every day, they provide meals to people over the age of 60 who cannot cook or shop for themselves. Gordon Chen/ has been delivering meals to seniors for over four years. Every Tuesday at 11:00 a. m. , he picks up the food at the kitchen of a local school and delivers it to 10 different men and women around town. 

"I love visiting with these people, " says Gordon. "Sometimes they don't have any other visitors all day. "

"I'm always happy to see Gordon and the other volunteers, " says Barbara"Thew help me more than any medicine!"

Meals on Wheels, started in England in the1940s and then moved to other countries. The program ensures that seniors eat healthier meals by using fresh ingredients. Seniors pay a small amount for each meal, or meals are free for those with little money. 

Many different kinds of people volunteer for Meals on Wheels. Teenagers, college students and neighborhood groups help to prepare the meals. Once the meals are ready, nearly half a million volunteers deliver more than a million meals to seniors in the United States every day. 

And these volunteers do much more than just deliver meals. "While I am volunteering, I also check the safety and health of these seniors, " says a volunteer. When volunteers notice a problem, they call for help. And most importantly, with every meal, they deliver a smile. 

"Why are you looking so sad, Patrick?" asked the old man. 

The little boy looked up at his grandfather. "Today at school, Shane McGuire called me a potato head!"

The old man's eyes smiled down at the boy. "Is that all?" Grandpa laughed. "Well, if that young man knew anything about potatoes, he'd know that he just gave you a compliment. "

"The potato, my boy, is one of the most loved vegetables in the world. Where would we all be without the potato? It's delicious, widely-used, satisfying, and very good for you!"
