At just ten years old, a Kenyan girl Karen Wanjiru Kimani has planted more than 30, 000 trees and cleared tons of plastic pollution from her local environment. 

Karen felt the need to act when she saw people doing harm to the environment. * She started a tree nursery(苗圃), hoping to replace the trees that were being destroyed and create a place where nature lovers could grow seedlings. 

"Trees are important for our environment, " Karen said. "I feel happy when I walk into my tree nursery, seeing the trees growing and seeing people planting trees. "

Karen's environmental work has not gone unnoticed (被忽视). She was chosen the Cabinet Secretary for the Environment at school and invited to the United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP27, in Eygpt. Karen was the youngest delegate(代表) at the conference and had the chance to speak with world leaders. 

"I met the president of Kenya. I told him about me, and we discussed the environment, " said Karen. 

On the weekend, Karen leads a plastic recycling club and cleans up her community with her friends. 

The young eco-warrior(环保勇士) has many ambitions(抱负) for the future and dreams of opening a plastic recycling factory one day. 

"I would like to do more for the environment. It makes me so happy, " says Karen. 

Karen wants to build a greener Kenya. Her actions show that even a small seed can grow and make a big difference. 

 Cecil is 52 years old. Steve is 50. Together, Cecil and Steve make a good team. They help remove some of the large amounts of plastic waste that have washed up on beaches in the southwest of the UK. 

Cecil has been an important part of Steve's life for more than 25 years. But there's something you should know about Cecil: we're not talking about a human. Cecil is a 52-year-old campervan(露营车).

Steve Green bought the campervan when he was working in Australia in 1998. It only cost him the equivalent(等量) of about $230 in today's money. And although he's spent a lot of time repairing it over the years, it's still working and still helping the Earth. 

Steve and Cecil help an organization called Clean Ocean Sailing that clears plastic from beaches both in Cornwa ll and on islands nearby.

Steve sometimes uses the crane(起重机) attached to the front of the campervan. It lifts larger pieces of plastic, which are then taken to a recycling center.

Over the years, Cecil has traveled more than 1. 4million kilometers. Before Steve bought the campervan it was used as a bus in Australia. Now Steve still uses it for family trips as well as beach cleaning.

It now runs on used cooking oil from pubs and restaurants, and Steve thinks the old campervan could keep going for another 50 years!

Vanuatu, a country made up of islands in the Pacific Ocean, took action against pollution in 2018, banning (禁止) certain kinds of single-use plastic. A new report shows that the change has worked and plastic pollution has fallen by a lot. 

In 2018, Vanuatu introduced a ban on single-use plastic bags, plastic straws and takeaway boxes made from polystyrene(聚苯乙烯). In 2019, they added plastic flowers and single-use cutlery (餐具) and plates to the list. The banned items used to make up 35% of Vanuatu's waste but now less than 2%. 

Before the ban, lots of plastic rubbish that had gathered in the sea used to fill some of Vanuatu's lagoons(潟湖).   ▲   But the situation is improving and there is now much less plastic in beautiful places like ErakorIsland. 

In shops, most customers carry reusable bags and at outdoor events, food is often served wrapped (包) in banana leaves. New business opportunities (机会) are springing up too, thanks to the need to replace banned items. One example is a business called Mamma's Laef, which makes reusable shopping bags. Its owner, JackKalsrap, said, "We're a small island state, so we know that pollution can really overwhelm (压垮) us more than in other bigger countries. "

Not all single-use plastic is banned. For example, fish is still wrapped in plastic, and people still use plastic bottles. The government plans to ban more things like disposable nappies (一次性尿布) and make it easier to recycle plastic bottles.

Li Lei did not know what to expect when he volunteered for the 9th Asian Winter Games Harbin 2025. Now he thinks it was the most(令人惊喜的) experience of his life. "It's fantastic to work as a volunteer!" he says.
