Project—based learning，or PBL，is a teaching method in which students work on a project with the goal（目标） of answering a real—world question or solving a practical problem.PBL requires students to use skills such as critical thinking，problem solving，creativity，and collaboration.Moreover，students are proud of their work because they will need to present their ideas to an audience（观众）.PBL leads to the creation of a product.An important part of PBL is audience feedback and comments（评论）. 

PBL can fit into any subject area in social studies，for example，students can research the history and culture of their community，exploring a festival for the community，which includes traditional costumes，food，art，and music. 

In maths，students can make a quilt（被子）with symbols of their community's heritage.This project joins knowledge of geometry，art，and history together.It would require maths skills to measure the material used to make the quilt.The quilt could be displayed at a country fair or a school meeting.In language arts，students could team up with a school from a different culture First of all，they could exchange information through a class website.Then they could pack items that represent their school or culture.Students would give a description of each item and why it is relevant.Finally，the students could exchange the packages through the mainland ask follow—up questions about the items they received.

While Westerners were getting used to paying with credit cards（信用卡）or bank cards at the very beginning of the 21st century，most Chinese people still liked to pay in cash （paper money） out of habit．However，today，Chinese people may be leading the world in mobile payment，mainly WeChat Pay and Alipay．

Foreigners feel amazed when Chinese people buy everything with their phones．At least，this was the case for Lim Swee Say，Manpower Minister of Singapore．

When Lim was waiting in line to buy some snacks at a street stall（货摊）in Shanghai，he saw other customers show their phones and take the food without giving over any cash．Soon after，he realized that the customers were using mobile payment． "Singapore is actually backward（落后）" ，said Lim．

Thepopularity of mobile payment in China has pushed many foreign countries and agencies to accept them．And several reasons might make this mobile payment spread in the whole world．

● Quite a few Western mobile payment services require businessmen to install（安装）expensive machines before customers can use them．While using Chinese mobile payment，all it takes is a QR code（二维码）and a smart phone．

● Nowadays，almost everyone has a smart phone，even teenagers．And the mobile payment has helped people save the trouble of taking wallets with them．It's not only safer，more convenient，but also environmentally friendly．

Walking through the city streets with a few close friends has become more and more popular among young people in China.It is called City walk（城市漫步）.People would like to have a trip to walk around the city to relax and explore the beauty of the city.

City walk first appeared in London，England，to let tourists travel like locals.A group of people followed a guide，enjoyed the streets of the city，saw the buildings up close and got a deep understanding of the history and culture.At that time，City walk emphasized heartfelt feelings and new understanding.

But in China，City walk emphasizes following the heart and moving at a slower speed.People do not need to have a good plan before they start walking.Unlike walking in the park or around the neighbourhood，City walk involves discovering old buildings，visiting special shops，having a cup of coffee，trying local food and so on.People take photos，make videos and share their stories online.They tell others where they go and what they find.

In this fast—paced world，young people are always working hard and having little time to visit local places.City walk helps them live a warmer，more relaxed and slower lifestyle.Whether it's a busy market，a small shop in a small neighbourhood or a modern city street，they can all feel comfortable.

The first time I ate Sichuan hot pot was in Changchun in northeastern China.I had only been in China for a week when Rui，my new Chinese friend，asked me， "Have you ever had hot pot？" 

"No，what is it？" I answered. 

"It's good.You'll like it.See you tonight at 7？" 

And so it was decided. 

The hot pot restaurant was popular in the city.We found a table at the far end of a room.Soon，a large hot pot arrived.The hot pot itself had two sides.On one side was a cloudy white broth.The broth on the other side was covered with bright red oil. 

"Is that red pepper oil？" I asked. 

"Yes，" Rui answered. 

"You should try it.If you like spicy （辛辣的） food，you'll really enjoy it." Rui picked up a thin slice of lamb with his chopsticks and then put it in the red broth.In seconds，it was cooked，and he put it on my small plate. 

"If it's too spicy，you can use this other broth—it's not spicy at all because it doesn't have any pepper's in it，" Rui pointed to the cloudy white broth on the other side of the pot 

"No，" said， "this is fine." 

But it was more than fine：It was spicy，mouth—numbing，and amazing.I ate and ate until the restaurant was almost closed.I just couldn't get enough of it. 

For hundreds of years，millions of Chinese people have felt the same way：They just can't get enough hot pot.It has always been their favourite food. 

What makes Sichuan hot pot different from other hot pots is the use of huajiao.It is said that the spicy food helps people get through Sichuan's hot and wet weather. 

Nearly as famous as the Sichuan hot pot is the Beijing hot pot.The Beijing hot pot uses lamb and many of the same ingredients （配料） as the Sichuan hot pot，but has a lighter taste.The Northeast Chinese hot pot usually contains pork and pickled cabbage，while the Guangdong hot pot uses a chicken or a fish broth，and is known for its wide range of ingredients.In fact，while lamb hot pot is quite popular，almost any kind of ingredient can be found in hot pot cooking. There    are    as    many    kinds    of    hot    pots    as    there    are    cooks. 

In China，people like to joke that there is no problem that a hot pot can't solve.The fire from a hot pot can melt just about any icy disagreement and warm just about any heart.Over a hot pot，people can talk and share not just food，but friendship.While the food may soon be forgotten，these friendships stay with us forever.Even today，when I think of hot pot，my friend Rui's face immediately comes to mind，and I remember all the good times I spent with him.

Mr.Allen held out a glass of water with three ice cubes in it."Why do things float？"he asked the class.No one said a word.The whole class was 1 .

A few students laughed.Hands went 10 all around the room. 

"I see aliens!"
