Dear diary, 

Today I'm looking back on a difficult time in my life, and I want to write down how it changed me. When I was in Grade Eight, my biggest dream was to be a member of the school basketball team. I had loved basketball since I was a little kid, and I spent every afternoon after school practicing dribbling, shooting, and running on the playground. My father even bought me a new basketball and often practiced with me on weekends. I was sure that my hard work would pay off, and I couldn't wait for the try-out day to come.

The try-out day finally arrived. I woke up early that morning, put on my favorite basketball jersey, and went to the school playground with excitement. There were more than 30 students trying out for the team, and I felt a little nervous but confident. The coach, Mr. Brown, asked us to do some warm-up exercises first, and then we took turns showing our skills. I did my best to shoot accurately and run as fast as I could, but when the try-out ended, Mr. Brown called me aside and shook his head gently.

"I'm sorry, but you can't join the team," he said. "You're fast and hard-working, but you're not tall enough. Basketball requires height, and I don't think you'll be able to keep up with the other players." His words felt like a knife in my heart. I thanked him and walked away quietly, trying to hold back my tears. When I got home, I locked myself in my room and cried for a long time. I felt so disappointed and hopeless, and I even threw my basketball in the corner, thinking I would never play it again.

My best friend, Tom, noticed that I was sad and came to see me every day. He knew how much basketball meant to me, so he didn't just comfort me—he helped me find a new way forward. "Why do you let one failure stop you?" he asked. "You're good at sports, not just basketball. What if you try swimming? It doesn't require height, and I think you'll be good at it." At first, I didn't want to try anything new. I was too hurt by my failure to the basketball team, but Tom kept encouraging me, and finally, I agreed to give swimming a try.

I joined the school swimming club the next week. At first, it was very difficult. I didn't know how to breathe correctly in the water, and I often felt tired after a few laps. But I didn't give up. I practiced every weekend, and the coach of the swimming club was very patient, teaching me how to improve my skills. Slowly, I got better and better, and I even started to enjoy swimming. It made me feel free and relaxed, and it helped me forget the pain of failing the basketball try-out.

After six months of hard practice, I took part in the school swimming competition. I was nervous before the race, but I remembered Tom's words and did my best. When I touched the wall at the end of the pool, I found out that I had won the second prize. I was so excited that I cried tears of joy. I ran to Tom and thanked him for never giving up on me. He smiled and said, "I knew you could do it—you just needed a new chance."

Now, two years have passed. I'm still in the swimming club, and I've won several more competitions. I also keep a diary every day, just like I am now, to write down my feelings and experiences. Looking back, I'm glad that I failed the basketball try-out. It taught me that failure is not the end of the world—it's a chance to grow and find new opportunities. I used to think that growing up meant never failing, but now I understand that growing up is about facing failure bravely, learning from it, and moving forward.

Failure is a part of life, and it's not something to be afraid of. When one door closes, another opens, and we never know what wonderful things are waiting for us. This is the most important lesson I've learned, and I will carry it with me for the rest of my life.

When I was very young, my dad had the first telephone in our neighborhood. I still remember the shiny receiver in the box. I was too little to reach the telephone, but I knew that a wonderful person lived inside it—her name was Information Please. She could give anybody's number and the right time.

One day, my mom was out. I hit my finger and it hurt a lot. No one was home to help me. So I thought of the telephone! I called her. A soft voice said, "Information Please." I cried and told her about my finger. She told me to put ice on it. After that, I called her for everything—help with geography, or homework, and even what my small pet ate. 

When my pet bird died, I called her and cried, "Why do birds sing so well and make everyone happy, but died at last?" She said softly, "Paul, remember there are other worlds to sing in." Those words made me feel better. At age 9, we moved to Boston. I missed the old phone and never forgot her.

Years later, my plane stopped in Seattle. I called the operator (接线员) for help. To my surprise, Sally answered! I asked her to spell "fix", just like when I was little. She laughed and said my calls made her happy all day— she had no kids, so she hoped to talk with me.

Three months later, I called again. A different voice said Sally had died of illness. She left a message: "Tell Paul there are other worlds to sing in. He'll understand."

Today, the Nile is still an important natural wonder. It attracts many travellers who want to see its beauty and learn about its history. But it is facing threats from pollution and overuse. We must protect it.

Angel Falls is in Venezuela (委内瑞拉), the  (south) part of South America. It is about 979 metres high. It is the  (high) waterfall in the world. James Crawford Angel, an American  (explore), was the first to fly over the falls in a plane. But he died there in 1956. To remember him, people called the waterfall "Angel Falls".
