Children usually like animals, but many zoos are too far away from children's houses. A "small zoo" in Qingdao is special—it is in a welfare home (福利院). 

The Qingdao Children's Welfare Home has about 200 children and most of them have health problems. They are lucky because the zoo is near their house. They can see animals out of the windows. 

A big boy there isn't in good health. The head of the welfare home visits him every day. On one visit, the head asks, "What do you want to do after you get well?" The boy says, "I want to see animals. " Then the head says, "I'll take you to the zoo after you get well. " But, the next day, the boy leaves the world. "I am very sorry because the boy's dream doesn't come true, " the head says. Just then he wants to build a small zoo in the welfare home. It will be for the children who love animals. So here comes the small zoo. 

Also, the zoo is different from others because all the animals are children's favourite. Now there are horses, sheep and peafowl (孔雀) in the small zoo. When the weather is good, the children go to watch and have fun with them. 

"Staying with animals will help make the children healthy, " says Yang Suhong, one of the doctors in the welfare home. 

Hi, my name is Danielle. My favourite  (animal) are rabbits and I have a pet rabbit, Guus. He is 3 years old. He looks really big and he is heavy. Guus is not afraid  people. He is cute and  (friend). So many people stop to play with Guus when I take  walk with him.

Lisa's new home is far from the city. It is a big wooden house near the deer natural park, so Lisa's family has special neighbours—the deer.  She and her child Dudu are the first visitors to Lisa's house. Rose thinks the house is her place.  They eat the flowers and fruits there. Rose loves the flowers and Dudu loves the strawberries. 

The two deer love the food around Lisa's house.  They enjoy staying with them. They often walk around the house or lie down on the grass.  If someone visits Lisa, the deer will never get close. They only know Lisa's family well.

People know animals have feelings, but can we understand them? Scientists studied dogs' tails (尾巴) to find out. ____It says that humans can tell if a dog is happy or sad by watching its tail. 

The researchers showed dogs different things. Sometimes they gave the dogs their favourite toys or food. Sometimes there was nothing. When dogs saw something they liked, they wagged (摇动) their tails fast and high. When there was nothing, their tails moved slowly and low. The scientists recorded these movements with a camera. 

Then the researchers showed 10 videos of dog tails to 100 volunteers. Half of the videos showed happy tails, and half showed sad tails. About 70% of the volunteers correctly guessed the dogs' feelings. Some volunteers had never even owned a dog before! 

The result shows humans can naturally understand dogs' feelings through their tails. Scientists hope this study will help people take better care of pets. Now, some are working on a special machine to detect dogs' feelings automatically. This could make dogs' lives happier.
