Chinese calligraphy (书法) is a traditional art form of writing Chinese characters. Chinese scripts (字体) include the seal (篆), the official (隶), the regular (楷), the cursive (草) and the running (行). Different styles stand for different thoughts and emotions. The writing brush, Chinese ink, paper and the ink stone are necessary materials and tools. They are known as the Four Treasures of Study.

To write calligraphy, first of all, prepare the four treasures and lay out the paper. Then pour the ink into the ink stone (砚台). Next, hold the brush tightly with the thumb (拇指), index finger (食指) and middle finger of the right hand. Finally, dip the brush in the ink and write on the paper.

It's not easy to write calligraphy. We need a long time of hard training to write beautifully. There were many famous calligraphers (书法家) in history such as Ouyang Xun, Yan Zhenqing, Liu Gongquan and Zhao Mengfu. Calligraphers have created plenty of masterpieces which have been passed down from generation to generation. Sometimes students are organized to admire the works of famous calligraphers. One of the most famous masterpieces is The Orchid Pavilion Preface(《兰亭集序》) by Wang Xizhi, another famous calligrapher in history.

Actually, writing Chinese calligraphy is a good way to keep calm. It's a kind of high-level hobby in China. So on Chinese New Year's Eve, many Chinese people can write couplets (对联) themselves and hang them on the door. It's a symbol of good wishes for the coming year.

It's very meaningful to pass down our culture to future generations. We should try our best to learn calligraphy and carry it forward.

The Zeng Houyi Chime Bells were discovered in the Zeng Houyi Tomb in Suizhou, Hubei Province in 1978. They are historically important treasures of China.

The Zeng Houyi Chime Bells are hung (悬挂) at three levels and divided into (划分为) eight groups. There are 19 bells in three groups at the top level, 33 bells in three groups at the middle level and 12 bells in two groups at the bottom level. In addition, there is a single and much larger bell used to change pitch (音高). The bells in each row are different from one another in shape and size.

The Zeng Houyi Chime Bells are hung on two sets of wooden racks (架子). One rack is 7.48 meters long and 2.65 meters wide. The other rack is 3.35 meters long and 2.73 meters wide. The two racks are perpendicular to each other, and they make an angle of ninety degrees.

The Zeng Houyi Chime Bells weigh a total of 5 tons. The biggest bell is of 153.4 cm in height and 203.6 kg in weight while the smallest bell is of 20.4 cm in height and 2.4 kg in weight.

Five musicians were needed to play the instrument in the past. These bells are sounded by striking. Because of their shape, each bell could produce two different tones, one if struck at the side, the other at the center. The whole set of chime bells is able to produce all the tones of a modern piano.

There are more than 2,800 Chinese characters about music and the making of the instrument on the bells. Instruments of such a level were quite uncommon in the world at the time.

Recently, a type of drink, Chinese herbal milk tea, has become popular among young people in China. The drink combines traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and milk tea. Chinese herbal milk tea has the effects (功效) of traditional Chinese medicine and remains the taste of modern milk tea. Traditional Chinese medicine is the most important ingredients (材料). The most commonly used are angelica, Chenpi, Goji Berry, etc. Chinese herbal milk tea can warm the body, reduce tiredness, calm the mind and so on.

The process of making Chinese herbal milk tea is very easy. First, pour the ingredients into the water. Then, cook over the oven for about 40 minutes. Next, add tea, milk and a little sugar into it. Finally, stir (搅拌) it and the Chinese herbal milk tea is finished. The smells of tea and milk are mixed together so the taste is better than normal milk tea.

The inspiration of Chinese herbal milk tea came from young people. One girl said, "I no longer feel guilty about drinking milk tea because it won't make me gain weight." Surprisingly, middle-aged and elderly people also like it. Many customers said, "I've never tasted tea like this, and I want to have a cup every day."

Chinese herbal milk tea can not only satisfy our stomachache, but also improve our health. It meets the needs of consumers for health care. At the same time, it also reflects people's strong cultural confidence and the development of traditional culture.

"I was amazed when I first watched the Shadow Play (皮影戏) in Xi'an. It's so special that it makes me want to know more," said Sally from Armenia. She shares her Shadow Play works online, and she already has fans from different countries.

"I love interesting Chinese folklore (民俗) and fairy tales. For a long time, I tried to find ways to interpret stories and share them with others. That's when I happened to learn about the Shadow Play," she said.

Sally has been watching many videos and live shows to learn more about it. She said, "With a large box, a large piece of white paper and a lamp, my first Shadow Play stage was built." Even today, she still finds that experience pretty enjoyable. While making the Shadow Play, Sally always studies traditional Chinese culture and learns the meaning of each cultural symbol.

After sharing her works online, Sally soon got many fans across countries. Earlier this year, an Armenian television company broadcast (播出) her Shadow Play show on TV. The local people started to appreciate the beauty of the Shadow Play from Sally's works.

"Recently, I have been working on a shadow puppet (木偶) show about Chinese poetry. In the future, I want to share Armenia's fairy tales with Chinese friends through the Shadow Play. I will continue to make the Shadow Play, learn more knowledge, and use it to set up a special 'stage' for c... exchange," Sally said.

Learning Is Like a Journey

We can remember some important times in our lives. Some things have become good memories. The memories are always in the corner of our mind.

When I was in a kindergarten (幼儿园), I had many toys and friends. They made me laugh and cry. The teachers taught us many songs and games. We played all day. Although we did not know what learning was at that time, we were learning every day.

When I was in the primary school, I was excited to learn school subjects. Nearly every subject caught my attention. However, my favorite subject was science. I remembered on the first day our science teacher told us the sun was like a big fire ball. We were quite surprised and kept our mouths open. We began to wonder at the secret of nature. Later many other things came to our ears. We began to learn carefully.

When I was ten years old, I began to read newspapers, keep a diary, visit museums and make many friends. Every day was something new, interesting and exciting. Now I am in the middle school. Each day is new to me. Happily, I am still learning. It is like a journey to me. I have learned a lot, but there's still a long way for me to go. I hope to become a learned (有学问的) person someday.
