My Community

I'm Li Hua. I live in Sunshine Community. 

The community canteens (餐厅) in cities are attracting more and more young people. 

"It really helps," said Guo Zhiliang, who is in his 30s, after having some meals at the canteen. Guo found the community canteen named Runlao Canteen when he was looking for a shop to buy water. "I once bought a meat dish, a vegetable dish and rice, which only cost me 13 yuan. And the food was delicious," Guo said. 

Ji Heng is another young eater at Runlao Canteen. His family often go to the canteen for breakfast. "It's easy and fast to have breakfast here because it's close to our home and the dishes are cheap." 

As the community canteens are getting more popular, many young people share their dining experiences (经历) there. Others ask where the canteens are or hope their neighbourhoods can have the same kind of canteens. 

The community canteens are usually built to help the old in the neighbourhood. But ____? "Because young people have busy work and they have less time for cooking and cleaning the kitchen. And the takeaway is not healthy and needs to be waited for," Jin Tianlin, a researcher said. "So these canteens are loved by young people." 

How much time do people need to build a new house? It usually t about six months or more. But each year, t of people work together to build new houses in just four months! Who does the wonderful work? Habitat for Humanity (仁爱之家). 

Habitat for Humanity is a group that builds houses for families in n. It works in different countries. 

Volunteers help build the houses. They don't make m from the work. They do all the work for free. Volunteers can be builders and painters. Some are students. Habitat for Humanity builds more than 300,000 houses. More than 1.5 million people l in these houses. 

Building a house is hard work. Volunteers learn h to put up walls. They use many smart m and tools. These selfless (无私的) volunteers work with the family that will live in the house. Everyone works together to make the family's  d  come true. Suruchi Srikanth works with Habitat for Humanity for four years. She begins to v to help when she is in high school. She b  many houses with others.

It is midnight and you have to get up for work early, but the noise from the neighbours' houses always runs into your ears. What should you do? 

Learn more about your neighbours 

Do they have a new baby? If they do, they are surely trying to make the baby stop crying.  

You should try your best to know more about their problem before you talk to them. 

You can talk to your neighbours when they are not making noise or busy. Don't knock on their door if the problem happens in the middle of the night or if you are angry. Try to find a time when you and your neighbours are calm. 

For example, when you are both free at the weekend, see your neighbours with a plate of home-made cookies and talk friendly to them. 

Write them a note (便条) 

If you don't know your neighbours at all, talking to your neighbours face to face may not help with the problem. Then leave them a note on their door. 

Find others to help you 

If talking to your neighbours doesn't work, or if you don't want to talk to them, you may need to go to others for help.  Before you go to them, you need to know that your neighbours really make loud noise. 

It was a hot day. Mark and Timo were glad that they weren't lugging (用力拖) cans today. It was Wednesday yesterday, and it took hours to get all of the cans they had saved to the recycling (回收) centre. 

Today, the boys had to know how much money they got and what to do with it. They talked about bikes and basketballs. They dreamed about rockets and hot air balloons (气球). 

As they walked, Mark bent over and picked up a can without even thinking about it. When he saw the can in his hand, he laughed. 

"Old habits die hard," Timo said. "Maybe we had better buy more rubbish bags!" 

Mark and Timo were still laughing about picking up cans when they caught up with Mr Timmons. 

"Hi, Mr Timmons," smiled Timo. "Where are you heading?" 

Mr Timmons seemed pleased to see them. "Well, I'm on my way to help at the food pantry (食品柜)." 

"What goes on there?" Mark asked. 

"Oh, they always need to help pack or unpack cans of food," Mr Timmons answered. "The pantry helps those people who don't have enough money to buy food." 

"Not enough money for food?" said the boys together. They looked at each other and agreed. "Can we come along, Mr Timmons?" asked Timo. "I think we just found out what to do with our recycling money."
