Mark Twain's childhood played a very important role in his writing. He was born in a small town along the Mississippi River. The river and the people in the town became the inspiration for many of his stories.
As a boy, Mark Twain was naughty and loved exploring. He often played with his friends by the river, fishing and swimming. He also liked listening to the stories told by the riverboat pilots and the local people. These stories gave him many ideas for his later works.
When Mark Twain was 11, his father died. He had to leave school and start working to support his family. He worked as a printer, but he still spent time watching the river. Later, he became a riverboat pilot, which gave him a deep understanding of the river and the people who lived near it.
