①Numbers are not just numbers. They have some meanings(意义). Let's see some of the lucky(幸运的) and unlucky numbers in the world. 

②As for the number 3, people in Sweden think all good things come in threes. But people in Japan don't think so. They don't like taking photos when there are only 3 people. They think something bad will come for the one in the middle. 

③Chinese people don't like the number 4 because it sounds like Chinese pinyin"si". But people in Australia love this number. They think four is the top pick for them to get new phone numbers or room numbers. 

④In China, people think the number 6 means everything goes well. During the Spring Festival, many parents give 666 yuan to their children as gift money. But the number 6 is not welcome in most English-speaking countries. So it's not good to use 666 when you talk with your friends from the UK or the US. 

⑤The number 9 also has a good meaning in China. It sounds like Chinese pinyin"jiǔ", meaning a long time. In Norway, nine is a lucky number too. There are many nice stories about it. But people in Japan don't like it. When they say it in Japanese, it's just like the word"ku".

④Many of the trees go to zoos. Once a year, elephants in Austria get their favourite snacks(点心). The trees taste sweet. Some other animals also like them. 

⑤Some people like to have fun with the old trees. In Germany, people like a Christmas game. They try to throw(扔) the trees very far. It is an interesting tree-throwing game. 

⑥As you can see, the lives of Christmas trees are short, but they bring people so much fun. 

Huaping, Yunnan, is one of the poorest areas in China. However, one school there has made a big difference. Over the past12 years, it has sent 1, 800 poor girls to universities.

Zhang Guimei began to teach in Huaping twenty years ago. Many of her girl students would disappear just before they finished their studies. Zhang wanted to know why. She learned that these girls were from very poor families. They were forced(被迫) to work at a young age. "I really want to study, " one girl cried and told Zhang. 

Zhang wanted to change this. She collected money and, in 2008, built the Huaping High School for Girls. It is China's first and only free(免费的) high school for girls. "You are welcome here if you want to study, " said Zhang. 

It's tiring to run such a school. Zhang is now in poor health after all these years of hard work. She has to take many different pills(药片) every day. However, she still puts in all her time and effort because the school and the students are more important to her than anything else. Zhang is really like a beacon(灯塔) of hope for the young girls in Huaping. 

The first International Basketball Expo(国际篮球博览会) is from 8th November to 12th, in Fujian. In the Basketball Expo, we can see great love for the sport. 

Song Yihong loves basketball very much. He is 11 years old now. He has played basketball for 6 years. At first, he does this sport because he wants to be tall. "I'm too short. I'm not happy about that. And my mother wants me to keep healthy, so I play basketball. " He plays basketball every Thursday and Friday evening, and also Sunday afternoon. 

At first, he finds it difficult but now he thinks it interesting and useful. He thanks his PE teacher and friends very much because they give him much help. He thinks he is ready(准备好的) to meet difficult things because basketball helps him to be strong(强壮的).

Peng Lanxi lost his legs, but he still has a happy life. "I think life is like a mirror(镜子). You smile at him and he smiles back, "Peng Lanxi says.
