In March, eighth-graders at RCF Experimental School in Beijing took part in an exciting event—the Spelling Bee competition.

Last summer, while cleaning my grandfather's room, I discovered an old wooden box hidden under the dust. When I opened it carefully, I found a stack of yellowed envelopes tied together with a faded ribbon. Among them was a special letter that would completely change my understanding of our family's history.

The letter was written by my great-grandfather in the 1930s. Like many young people from our town, he went to Southeast Asia to find work. His letter described the difficulties he faced—the unfamiliar language, the hot and wet weather, and the deep loneliness of being far from home. But the most moving part was when he wrote about celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival far from home. He and other Chinese people shared mooncakes under the moonlight, smiling but also hiding their tears. 

My grandfather was actually born abroad. The letter explained why, when my grandfather was only ten years old, his father sent him back to China alone for school. "A tree may grow very tall, but its leaves will always return to their roots, " my great-grandfather wrote. He used this old saying to express his idea that, just as leaves fall back to the root of the tree, his son should return to his cultural home. 

Now, I understood why my grandfather had always been so strict about us writing Chinese. He was keeping our cultural roots alive in a new generation（一代）. 

Holding that piece of paper, I felt I was touching the heartbeat of our family's story. It was no longer just history in textbooks—it was my history. The bravery to travel far, the wisdom to remember our roots—these were real now. They were valuable gifts and now they rested in my hands. 

One of the best parts of autumn is its beautiful colors. Normally green leaves turn into orange, yellow, red and finally brown. This is called"leaf phenology", and many people look forward to it every year. However, because of climate (气候) change, this beautiful process is changing. 

A study this year shows that the length of the autumn season is changing. Leaves are taking longer to change color than before. Moreover, climate change is influencing the season in another way. Trees now hold onto their leaves longer, meaning they drop them much later than they did 20 years ago. 

According to Dr. Mann, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania, climate change not only makes leaves change color later, but also postpones the first frosts(霜冻) of the season. "That means pests(害虫) stay active for a longer time in autumn, " he said, "leading to a greater health risk to human beings. "

These changes break the balance of autumn's living systems. For example, some birds may miss the best time to fly south, and some animals cannot get ready well for winter. This puts many kinds of living things in danger, especially their ability to keep safe and have babies. 

Is there any hope? Dr. Mann points out that if humans take action to limit carbon emissions (限制碳排放), we could still slow down or even stop the worst influences of climate change on autumn. Autumn is a wonderful gift of nature. The beautiful autumn we protect today may be the sweet memory we will have tomorrow. 

Have you heard about animal cafés? In many zoos, you can only see the animals in cages. However, it will be easy for you to pet some cute animals in an animal café. It's a place where you can play with animals while enjoying the food and drinks.

Lightning is a hot flash of electricity produced during storms. It can reach temperatures between 30,000 to 50,000 degrees, which is hotter than the sun. Lightning is very dangerous and can kill people if it hits them, causing tens of deaths or bad hurts each year.

Thunderstorms can move fast and can last for a few minutes or several hours. The best way to protect yourself during a lightning storm is to know what to do as soon as you can.

The first thing to do is to find a safe shelter（庇护所）. A safe shelter is a closed place that is not too small. If you are in a car, be sure to keep your windows closed and stay inside. If you are at home, stay away from windows, do not get in water, stay off phones, stay out of the kitchen, and away from electrical outlets（电源插座）. Rooms like the kitchen have many electrical appliances（家用电器）in them. Lightning can hit the appliance and then jump to you if you are nearby.

If you happen to be outside and get caught in a lightning storm, try your best to get to a safe shelter. If you feel your hair starting to stand up or if your skin begins to hurt, you are feeling the effects of electricity and a lightning hit is about to happen. Get to a safe shelter at once or squat down（蹲下）and put your hands and head on your knees.

If you are outside and cannot reach a safe shelter, find a low place away from metal objects. Such objects should be avoided because they attract lightning. If you get caught in a storm and you are in a wooded area, squat down but stay away from trees because lightning often hits trees.

If you are swimming, fishing, or on a boat and a storm comes up, you should get to land and take shelter immediately. If for some reason you are on a boat and cannot get to bank quickly, you should squat down as low as possible in the middle of the boat.

Listening to music can make you feel less sick when in a moving car, according to new research--but it depends on the type of song you play.

Motion sickness（晕运病）is feeling uncomfortable or like you want to vomit（呕吐）, often when you're travelling by car, boat, plane or train. Other movement can cause it too. About one in three people are likely to get motion sickness if the movement is strong enough. Children between the age of 2 and 12 are more likely to feel ill than adults, but no one knows why some people fight with it their whole lives and others don't.

People get motion sickness because their senses are sending different messages to their brains. In a moving car, for example, your eyes see movement, but your inner ears（内耳）which control balance feels you are sitting still. This can make you feel ill.

To test music's effects, a brain specialist in China showed a study with 30 volunteers who easily get motion sickness. The volunteers were set up with instruments that made them feel like they were in a car, while sensors（传感器）on their heads recorded their brain activity. After a drive that made them feel sick, researchers played different types of music.

The result showed that joyful music was the best at reducing sickness. Soft music came next, followed by energetic music. However, sad music actually made people feel better more slowly. In fact, people who listened to no music at all felt better than those who listened to sad songs.

Based on this, the researchers believe that creating a personalized playlist of happy songs could be a simple and effective way to help you beat motion sickness on your next trip
