My 100 Days without a Mobile Phone

When was the last time you left home without your mobile phone? Can you imagine yourself living a month, or even a year without checking your mobile phone from time to time?

Staying connected to other people is a big part of my life. However, sometimes it can be bothersome (恼人的). One day I discovered I was terribly tired out. I tried turning notifications (通知) off. But the fear of missing out something important made me check the phone more often than before. So, I simply stopped using my phone.

Well, to tell the truth, it was not simple at all. For the first couple of days, I had a big fear that all of my friends would soon forget about me. The worries mixed with boredom kept bothering me. However, after three weeks without a mobile phone, I started noticing changes—changes which I liked, and which drove me to not just continue the experiment, but in fact to reorganize some of my habits.

First of all, after a month of staying away from my mobile phone, I found that my ability to focus improved. Besides, I discovered that the world is a beautiful place. I could understand the actual beauty of the world, and I did not need anyone else to prove the value of this beauty through likes or shares.

Now, as 100 days has passed, I can say that the experiment was worth it. I am planning to stay away from my phone for as long as possible.

The white stick has been used by many blind people for a long time. However, it hasn't really been improved until a blind engineer named Kursat decided to do something to change that. He hoped his invention would help the blind.

He invented a smart stick called WeWalk. The smart stick uses built — in speakers and different sensors (传感器) to warm about possible dangers. It helps blind people in navigating (导航) around their environment. It makes their travel much easier. The stick is priced at around $500. It is half the price of some smart phones. Most people can afford it. This invention is going to change the life of the blind.

Kursat well understands the difficulties that the blind face. That is because he is blind himself. He decided to use his knowledge of technology to invent something. It would not only change his life, but also the life of many others.

"These days, we are talking about flying cars. But the blind have been using just a simple stick. As a blind person, when I am at a bus stop, I don't know which bus is coming or which stores are around me. Now that kind of information can be provided by WeWalk," he said, "I believe the life of the blind will be much easier and safer."

Traditional Chinese painting is done with a brush dipped (浸) in black and colored ink. Paper and silk are also needed for painting. The finished work can be put on scrolls (卷轴).

Chinese folk music is another important part of Chinese culture. It has a long history. Shi Jing, one of the Confucian classics (儒家经典), contains many folk songs. They have been much loved by people up to now.

Traditional Chinese musical instruments are symbols of Chinese culture, such as guqin, guzheng, pipa, erhu, xiao and chimes (编钟). Sheng and suona are also popular in many villages in China. Xi'an drum music is a kind of large traditional drum music. It is a valuable part of ancient Chinese music and is regarded as the "living fossil (化石) of ancient Chinese music" in the world.

That was the first time I had been a waiter (服务员). It was harder than I had thought. At first, I was not good at the job. Some people were very unfriendly, and they got angry with me because of my mistakes. I was so upset and tired that I was almost ready to give it up the first afternoon. A family with three children came to have dinner the next day. The children kept asking for things like bowls, plates, free drinks all the time. I tried my best to serve them well. Then the father said to me, "Good job! Thank you very much for helping us." His words were just like a light in the dark. My tiredness suddenly went away. When I got the money at last, I felt very happy. The experience taught me that many jobs are not easy. Everyone is great when they are working hard.

On February 19, the Chinese-English Dictionary of Weiqi Terms (术语) came out in Beijing. It's the first professional dictionary about weiqi in China. As a symbol of Chinese culture, weiqi has its special language. It also has its own way of thinking and the method of communicating. The dictionary will serve as a necessary tool and bridge for spreading weiqi culture.
