Maria's First Day in Junior High

Maria is a new student at Sunshine Middle School. She is from Brazil, so she felt a little 1 on her first day. But with the help of her classmates, she had a great day.

How to Prepare for Your First Day of Junior High

Preparing well for the first day of junior high helps you feel less nervous. Here are 4 easy steps:  

First, check your school things the night before.  Put all your textbooks, stationery (pens, ruler, eraser), and school uniform (red scarf, sports jacket) in your schoolbag. Don't forget small things like your student card—you need it to buy food in the dining hall.  

Second, plan your morning time.  For example, if school starts at 8:00 a. m. , wake up at 6:30 a. m. This gives you time to eat breakfast, get dressed, and walk to school slowly. Don't wake up too late—you don't want to be late on your first day!  

Third, learn one thing about your new school.  You can ask your parents or an older student: "Where is the library?" or "What time is lunch?" Knowing one thing helps you feel more confident. Li Ming asked his cousin about the dining hall—he found it easily on his first day.  

Fourth, prepare a short self-introduction.  Say your name, your primary school, and one hobby. For example: "Hi! I'm Wang Tao. I went to Hope Primary School, and I like playing football. " This makes it easy to talk to new classmates.

Why the First Week of Junior High Is Important

The first week of junior high is a special time for every student. It's not just about meeting new teachers and classmates—it's about starting a new chapter in life. The first week is important for three main reasons.  

First, the first week helps you get used to the new school. Junior high is bigger than primary school—there are more buildings (teaching building, library, dining hall) and more rules. In the first week, you can learn where the classrooms, toilets, and dining hall are. You can also learn the school rules, like "don't run in the hallway" or "be quiet in the library". If you don't learn these in the first week, you may get lost or break rules later. For example, Li Ming got lost on his first day, but his classmate helped him—by the end of the week, he could find every place easily.  

Second, the first week helps you make new friends. In junior high, you have a new class with new classmates. The first week is the best time to talk to them: you can share your hobbies, talk about your primary school, or help each other with school things. Zhu Xiaomeng made friends with Li Meng in the first week—they now do homework together and play sports after class. Without the first week's chance to talk, they might not have become friends.  

Third, the first week helps you start good study habits. Junior high has more homework and harder subjects than primary school. In the first week, you can learn to plan your time: for example, do homework first after school, then play. You can also learn how to take notes in class—this helps with your studies later. Wang Tao started taking notes in the first week, and now he gets better grades in math.  

Some students say the first week is "boring" because it's full of introductions. But these introductions are useful. The first week of junior high sets the foundation for your next three years. It's important to make the most of it!  

A Comparison of Primary School and Junior High School Life

Starting junior high is exciting, but it's different from primary school. The chart below compares the two school lives, focusing on subjects, school things, and activities. 

In primary school, students have fewer subjects—only 6 main ones. They don't need many school things: a few textbooks and a simple pencil case with pencils and an eraser are enough. Classes are short (40 minutes), and homework is easy. After school, students often play games with friends on the playground, then go home early to watch TV or play with toys.  

In junior high, students have more subjects. Core subjects like Chinese and Math are still important, but there are new ones like history and geography. These new subjects help students learn more about the world. Junior high students need more school things: many textbooks, a full set of stationery (pens, ruler, eraser), and a school uniform (red scarf, sports jacket, and trousers). Classes are 5 minutes longer (45 minutes), and homework is harder—students need to spend more time on it.  

Daily activities are also different. Primary school has morning reading, but junior high has a morning flag-raising ceremony every Monday—all students stand straight and sing the national anthem. After school, junior high students can join school clubs (like the music club or science club) or practice sports (like football or basketball). They go home later than primary school students, but they have more fun activities.  

Understanding these differences helps new junior high students prepare better. It also makes it easier to fit in and enjoy their new school life!  

Li Ming's First Week in Junior High

Li Ming started his junior high life last week. He was nervous on the first day, but now he feels like part of the school. Let's look at his first week!  

On Monday morning, Li Ming woke up at 6:30 a. m. He put on his school uniform: red scarf, sports jacket, and trousers. His mom prepared his schoolbag with all his things: textbooks, pencil case, pens, and an eraser. "Don't forget your ruler, " his mom said. Li Ming put it in his pencil case and ran to school.  

At school, Li Ming met his new English teacher Mr Pan. Mr Pan is friendly—he asked everyone to introduce themselves. Li Ming said, "I'm Li Ming. I like Chinese and art best. I also like playing basketball. " After class, Li Ming's deskmate Wang Tao showed him around the school: the teaching building (with 30 classrooms), the library (with many books), and the playground (where they do morning exercises).  

On Wednesday, Li Ming had his first PE class. He played football with his classmates—they laughed a lot when he missed the ball. "It's OK, " Wang Tao said. "I'll teach you!" Li Ming felt happy—his classmates were so kind.  

On Friday, the school held a "New Student Welcome Party". Li Ming brought a photo of his family and talked about their Spring Festival traditions. He also made a new friend, Li Meng—she likes maths and music, just like Li Ming's little sister.  

By the end of the week, Li Ming told his mom, "Junior high is fun! I have new friends, and I like all my subjects. I can't wait for next week!" His mom smiled and said, "I'm glad you feel at home. "

October 5

I had a busy day today. I （wake）up at 6:30 a. m. and （make）a task list: math homework, English reading, and music club. I finished math homework from 5:30 to 6:00 p. m. —it was difficult, but I （not give）up. 

October 8  

I attended the Students' Union's time management workshop today. Zhang Wei （teach）us to make a "Daily Task List". He said we should mark important tasks with a star. I practiced(make) a list for tomorrow—I （do）English reading first, then history homework.  

October 12 

I used the task list for a week now. It helped me finish homework 20 minutes earlier every day! My parents （be）happy when I told them. They （give）me a new planner yesterday. I （keep）using the task list—I （believe）it will help me in junior high.
