Practise a lot

There is an old saying "Practice makes perfect." You should take every chance (机会)2 to use your English speaking skills. Try practising in3 situations, such as on the phone and face-to-face. Learn phrases

Record yourself

Some people don't like the sound of their own voice.8, it can be a powerful tool in helping you improve your English speaking skills. Try recording yourself speaking in English and listen to it back. It is one of the9 of improving your speaking skills. You will be able to hear how you10 and notice any mistake. You can also use this method to practice new phrases and vocabulary, and to improve your English pronunciation.

China has many heroes in science. Nan Rendong is famous scientist in China. He is well-known for his great (achieve) in building the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope (FAST). FAST is the largest radio telescope in the world.

Nan Rendong spent over twenty years (work) on this project. At first, he had to go to many far-away places across the country. These places often didn't have good roads. Choose Where to Go

You should visit Beijing, Xi'an, and Shanghai. Beijing has the Forbidden City and the Great Wall. Xi'an has the Terracotta Warriors. Shanghai has the Oriental Pearl TV Tower.

Decide How Many Days to Stay

Spend at least a week, 3-4 days in Beijing, 2 days in Xi'an, and 1 day or 2 days in Shanghai.

Plan Your Trips in China

There are many costs. You need to think about how to get there and where to stay. There are also food costs and entrance fees for places you visit. High-speed trains and flights are good ways for long travel. In cities, take subways, buses, or taxis.

Get Ready with Things You Need

Bring your passport and visa (护照和签证). Take the right clothes, charger (充电器), a camera, and any medicine. Wear comfortable shoes if you go to the Great Wall.

Around the 10th century, the rulers of the Liao Dynasty (916—1125) made it a royal (皇家的) hunting place because it was home to beautiful forests, green grasslands, clear lakes and different kinds of wild animals. Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty (1644—1911) liked Saihanba so much that he made hunting there a royal festival. The royal festival finally stopped in 1860 because of no money and it had to be open to the public. After that, the cutting down of trees and wild fires changed green Saihanba into gray deserts. By the 1950s, the beauty of Saihanba had completely disappeared with only one tree left. The tree is now famous as "the Tree of Honor".

On seeing the tree, Chinese scientists made up their minds and dreamt of restoring Saihanba. In February, 1962, the plans were made and more than 120 foresters joined 242 local people in Saihanba to begin rebuilding it. Over the next 55 years, those first tree-planters fought against many difficulties to continue planting trees. After their death, their children and relatives followed their footsteps and went on with their hard work of planting trees.

Today, the scientists' dream has come true and beautiful grassland and flowers appear again around the tree of honor. Chinese people successfully changed Saihanba in the past half-century.

The workers knew Big Bird needed lots of food to reach its full adult size. In the wild, a group of pelicans work together to catch fish. But Big Bird didn't have a group, so the workers fed it fish. Eating fish, Big Bird got bigger.

Everyone at the resort hoped that Big Bird would fly away and go back to its group when it got healthy. But Big Bird needed to learn how to fly! The workers tried to teach it.

After more practice, Big Bird showed its growing number of fans a successful flight (飞行). Just as it was getting dark, Big Bird landed at the same place where it took off. "We're so proud of it. It can fly!" Big Bird's trainers said.

No one knows how long Big Bird will stay at the resort. Maybe one day it will fly away, find a group of pelicans to be with, and never come back to the place where it learned to fly. But before that happens, the workers and visitors are happy to be with it.

This bookstore is in Phases 2 and 3 of Haibin Square in Bao'an. It was planned to be finished at the end of 2024. And it will open to everyone in 2025. When it's done, its floor area will reach about 131,000 square meters. It will have two floors above the ground and two floors under the ground.

The bookstore is not just for buying books. It's a place where people can learn and have fun with different cultures. Its design is special. It looks like two jade plates (玉盘). This design mixes Chinese and Lingnan styles well. There will be lots of green spaces. These green spaces will make a nice place where city life and nature are together. Also, the design uses low-carbon ideas. For example, it makes the building layout (布局) better, uses more natural light and air, and has more plants. All these make people feel good when they come to the bookstore.

Roads that recharge (给电池充电)

With the right technologies, cars around the word could be producing energy as they go on the road.

Piezoelectric (压电的) roads mix traditional asphalt (柏油) with new materials. They use vibrations (震动) from passing cars to produce electricity. Piezoelectricity, in fact, is nothing new. It was invented in 1880. However, it has never been widely used before now. Lancaster University is going to change that. It has been improving the technology, including developing roadside batteries that can store electricity.

Roads that have brains

Roads of the future may be able to know how many people are on them. They could send people updates on weather and traffic situations, and recharge electric cars as they drive.

This seems to be a dream, but a company has almost made it come true. By sensing the weight of a vehicle, the company's smart roads can record the speed of each wheel. After having collected traffic data (数据) , the roads will send it to the drivers.

Roads that never freeze

A tech company has developed the snowless roads. The development is useful because driving in snowy weather can be dangerous. When they feel snow or ice on their surfaces, the roads will heat themselves up so that the snow or ice will turn into water and get dry gradually. The project has been successfully tested on a few roads and in some car parks.

Self-awareness is an ability to see yourself clearly. You may know that you love playing an instrument because you're good at it, and music makes you happy. Or you know you prefer watching TV on your own because it helps you relax. And it also means understanding how your thoughts, feelings and behaviour can influence other people.

Knowing what you like, dislike and more about yourself allows you to be wise about friendship, schoolwork and social life. It helps build confidence. Being self-aware doesn't mean only thinking of yourself. By understanding your own feelings, you have more understanding of other people, too.

A good way to learn about anything is to ask questions. Ask yourself questions that start with "What" instead of "Why". So if you don't understand why you keep arguing with a friend, ask yourself what you disagree on instead of why you're arguing. If you're wondering whether you like a book, ask yourself what were the last three books you loved and what you liked about them. To recognize your own likes and dislikes is a good way to learn more about yourself.

Learning to be more self-aware is a skill, and this means you learn it as you grow. So don't be afraid of taking risks. And encourage yourself to try out new things, like playing a new sport or listening to different music. Learn more about yourself and bring out the best in you.

When Dillen, a professor at Leiden University, and her workmates do studies in the Netherlands, they find that about 70% ~ 75% of people do other things while eating. This habit may be bad for our health. The studies show that when we don't focus on eating, we often eat more and feel hungry again sooner. Over time, this can lead to putting on weight.

Why does this happen? When eating, it usually takes our bodies 20 minutes to send "full" signals to the brain. But if we're distracted, our brains are too weak to notice these signals well. We can't feel how full we are and may not taste food properly when these signals are not received. In one study, some people were asked to drink sweet water while working out tasks (任务) in a brain scanner (扫描仪). When the tasks were hard, they felt the sweet water was less sugary. Another study in 2021 also found playing difficult games made food smell weaker. Not enjoying food fully makes us unhappy. A study in 2024 showed people enjoyed fun activities less when distracted. To feel better, they might eat more.

So putting down your phone during meals could help you eat less and enjoy more!

"Look," the old man said, "do you see that fern (蕨类植物) and bamboo there?"

"Yes," the man answered.

"When I planted the fern and bamboo seed, I watered them carefully. Within a few days, the fern quickly grew from the land," the old man went on. "However, I watered the bamboo seed for years. It still didn't sprout. But I didn't give up and continued looking after it. In the fifth year, a small sprout came out of the land. Within six months, the tree grew a hundred feet tall."

"The little bamboo tree had been growing underground in the past four years, developing a root strong enough for its ground growth in the following year. If it hadn't done this, it would not be so strong. So you know, all the time you were struggling, you were actually growing strong roots," the old man said. Jiang Zhaopeng, 18-year-old medical student from Shandong City Service Technician College in Yantai, faced a life-or-death test on Saturday—not in an exam hall, but in the backseat of a taxi.

May 10th, 2025 is the (one) day of this year's spring college entrance exam. At about 8:10 a.m., Jiang (hurry) to the testing place with his classmate in a taxi when suddenly Jiang's classmate (fall) down, showing signs of a heart attack.

"I thought he was just tired at first," Jiang said. "But then I realized he was in a (danger) condition, because he seemed to stop breathing."

It's common for parents to compare their children with other kids. While they might mean well, it can make you feel sad or even angry. So, how should you deal with this situation?

Understand their purposes.

Most parents compare because they want you to improve. They believe that others' success will encourage you. So, try to understand their purposes. Ask yourself: are they really criticizing (批评) me, or just hoping I'll do better?

Communicate calmly.

If comparisons get you down, talk to your parents in a respectful way. For example, you can say, "I know you want me to succeed, but when you compare me with others, I feel like I'm not good enough." This helps them understand your feelings without starting an argument.

Turn comparisons into motivation (激励).

If your parents praise (称赞) some people, ask yourself what you can learn from them. Maybe they study efficiently, practise more, or use time more wisely. Get into their good habits, and you will do better next time.

Build self-confidence.

Write down your strengths—maybe you're creative, kind, or brave. When your parents compare, think of what makes you special. With the confidence, you will not care too much about unhelpful comparisons.

Parents' comparisons can be hard, but you can deal with them wisely. Remember, you are not defined (定义) by others' success-your progress is what truly matters.
