During the 2021 Shanghai Fashion Week, a young, slim and confident model with an iron leg drew everyone's attention. Her name was Niu Yu. She lost her right leg in the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake. She was only 11 years old then. 

Niu Yu used to be in the school sports team. She loved running. But the disaster broke her dream. She had to live with an artificial leg. It wasn't comfortable, and her leg often bled. People's curious eyes made her even more uncomfortable. She always tried to hide her leg under jeans or dresses. 

With the support of her family and friends, Niu Yu slowly came out from the shadows. In 2018, right before her 21st birthday, she decided not to hide her leg any longer. To her surprise, she received lots of encouraging words. She also finished a half marathon in about 4 hours. She completed the hard 10-year journey of finding herself again. 

Now Niu Yu puts her experiences on social media (媒体). She listens to disaster survivors and encourages them to look forward. In 2023, she carried the torch (火炬) at the FISU World University Games. "It is a great honour for me," she said. "But it is also a good chance to show people the power of being brave. "

A disaster can bring wounds and pain. But we should always face them with courage. As the writer Nora Ephron once said, "Above all, be the hero of your life, not the victim (受害者). "

Scientists from China's Shanghai Jiao Tong University are developing a robot "guide dog" to help blind people. The robot dog is about the size of an English bulldog but a little wider. It has six legs instead of four. The extra legs make it more stable and help it move faster. 

The robot is being tested in Shanghai. With the help of cameras and AI, the robot dog can see, listen and speak with blind people. It can help them during daily trips outside and be a "friend" at home. Blind people can also use a cane (手杖) to control the robot's walking and running speed. The robot can even recognize the traffic lights—real guide dogs are unable to do that. 

Li Fei and Zhu Sibin are helping test the robot. Li is totally blind and Zhu can only see a little. Zhu often uses a cane to move around. "The robot dog will make it easier to get into public places than with real guide dogs. I am happy to join in the test. It could change our lives in the near future," Li said. 

In China, there are about 17. 31 million blind people, but there are only about 400 guide dogs. The new robot is trying to solve this problem. "We believe our robot will act as ‘a pair of eyes' for blind people," said Professor Gao Peng, one of the scientists. He thinks there could be a large market for these robot dogs.

That Made a Difference to Me

Dear Pat,

I often feel nervous when teachers call on students to answer questions. What's worse,when they call on me, my mind goes completely empty. I feel so afraid and shy. What should I do?

Hi Jason,

I completely understand you. I also fight with nervousness when speaking in front of others. Public speaking makes almost everyone nervous, but the good news is that you can get used to it. 

First, try to stay calm. Even if you are called on, take a deep breath and give yourself a moment to think. What helps me the most is focusing on the first thing I want to say and letting my thoughts start from there. 

Second, prepare yourself. Pay attention in class and review important points before classes. It may also help to write down a few key ideas. I don't like forgetting things I want to say, so it's OK to have a list of important points in front of me. 

Finally, don't be afraid to make mistakes. Teachers understand that students get nervous, and classmates are usually thinking about themselves. 

See speaking in front of others as a chance, for you can share your ideas and get improved. Be patient with yourself, and you'll get better over time.

The Beijing Central Axis（中轴线）was listed as China's 59th World Heritage Site（世界遗产）on July 27^th,2024. This news brought worldwide attention  the ancient building groups. 

The Beijing Central Axis is about 7. 8 kilometers from north to south and runs through the heart of Beijing. It has 15 key heritage parts,  (include) famous landmarks like the Forbidden City, Tian'anmen Square, and the Drum Tower. These structures not only show the outstanding skills of ancient Chinese people  carry the country's long-standing culture and philosophy（哲学）of city-building. 

The idea of the Central Axis dates back to about 221BC. Over the  (century), it has been improved during different dynasties  (great). For example, during the Ming and Qing dynasties, more buildings  (add) along the axis, which made it more complete and beautiful. 

It is of great importance for us to protect the Beijing Central Axis. The Chinese government  (carry) out many projects to keep these historical sites so far. Local people also take part in the protection activities, such as  (be) a volunteer to clean up the areas around these heritage sites.

Microplastics in Water—a Wake-up Call for All of Us

Today researchers announced that they have found tiny pieces of plastic—microplastics（微塑料）in water from around the world. These pieces are so small that they are unseen to the naked eye（裸眼）and are very difficult to clean from the water. 

Even worse, the plastic has also been found in drinking water across the world, which makes people worried.  Scientists do not know what level of harm this will do to us in the future. 

 For example, they're from washing and drying clothing and from cleaning products,such as toothpaste and face washes. Microplastics are even found in the air outside and at our homes. 

Almost every country across the world agrees that we cannot continue using so much plastic in our lives.  We also need to introduce new duties and other means to encourage companies to choose environment-friendly things and recyclable packaging（包装）for their products. 

We need to take personal responsibility, too. We all may have the freedom to choose how we spend our money and what kinds of business and products we support. Let's work together to protect our environment, both now and for the future. 

DeepSeek-Rl, a new AI model（模型）developed by the Chinese company DeepSeek, has rocked the AI industry around the world. Open to the public on Jan. 20, it quickly beat OpenAI's ChatGPT and topped the Apple's App Store by Jan. 27. 

According to DeepSeek, in tasks like math and natural language reasoning, the performance of this model matches that of the leading models from big companies like OpenAI. But it's much cheaper and uses much less computing power. The report on its earlier V3 model showed that DeepSeek is the least expensive among large language models. It costs about 5. 57million US dollars (about 40. 58 million yuan) to make it. 

Behind the lower cost is the introduction of a new idea in R1's training. Different from traditional methods such as CoT（思维链）and SFT（监督微调）,DeepSeek uses RL（强化学习）as the main training method. While CoT depends on step-by-step reasoning and SFT on huge amounts of data（数据）, R1 allowed developing reasoning skills in a natural way, making it better suited for difficult and changing tasks. 

The AI industry's development has long depended on making computing power bigger. "By increasing the data quality and improving the model structure, DeepSeek may change the AI field," pointed out the US bank Morgan Stanley. "Bigger is no longer always smarter," said the bank. 

What's more, DeepSeek-R1 is open-source. Everyone is free to the model's code（代码）and makes changes to suit their own needs. "We won't choose closed-source," said Liang Wenfeng, the founder of DeepSeek. He highlights the importance of sharing knowledge, building a healthy field and helping the progress of technology. "That is the power of open research," Meta's chief AI scientist Yann LeCun agreed. 

Victor Hugo once said, "Laughter is the sun that drives winter from the human face. " Up to now, nobody has been able to create laughter like Charlie Chaplin(1889–1977). He brightened the lives of millions through two world wars and the hard years in between. 

Not that Charlie's own life was easy. He was born to a poor family. Charlie learnt to sing and dance as soon as he could speak and walk. Every member of the family performed to help make money. By his teens, Charlie had, through his humor, become one of the most popular child actors in England. 

Later, Chaplin began making silent films, where the story was told only through body language and movements. Usually, Chaplin appeared in these films as the Little Tramp, a poor man with a moustache（胡须）, large trousers, worn-out shoes, and a round hat. He walked around stiffly（僵硬的）with a walking stick. Even though the Little Tramp was considered a failure in life, he always tried to turn his sadness into joy like Chaplin. 

In the film The Kid (1921), the Little Tramp brings up an abandoned（遗弃的）child as his own. While the film has many funny moments, it also has times of great sadness. As Chaplin said, it was "a picture with a smile, and perhaps a tear". Similarly, in The Gold Rush(1925), with nothing to eat, the Little Tramp treats one boot（靴子）as something delicious and makes you believe that this is one of the best meals he has ever tasted. 

Chaplin once said, "My pain may be the reason for somebody's laugh. But my laugh must never be the reason for somebody's pain. " He is loved and remembered as a great actor who encouraged people during dark times. 

While there are many birds that visit our leafy garden, it's the pair of bullfinches（灰雀）that bring the most excitement. It's been wonderful to watch how both 1 shoulder the serious duty of caring for their young. Last summer the bullfinch family, parents and two babies, were happily sitting in a tree close to our back window and2 the late afternoon sunshine. 

With 3 sign, clouds appeared, and light rain began to fall. At first the birds seemed to enjoy the rain and moved out along the branch（树枝）, shaking their feathers to take advantage of the wet weather. 4 , day turned to night within minutes. Dark clouds brought a sudden heavy storm; thunder and lightning, wild winds and rain turned the garden into an5 place for the little family. 

Through the lightning, we watched in 6 as the parents guided their little ones back along the branch until they were all close to the tree trunk（树干）, both parents spreading their 7 over their young to protect them from the storm. When the storm 8 , the family walked slowly 9 out along the branch and spread their wings to take in the sunshine. When I look up at the pair who continue to visit our garden,I know I'm not just looking at 10 parents, but very wise ones.

I was sleeping peacefully last night when I was woken up by someone's groans（呻吟）. I listened, and heard that they were from Sam, a student from Africa. I really planned to 1 sleeping, as I had just fallen asleep, but I couldn't because Sam groaned louder and louder. It showed he was 2 ill. At that time, Robbie also woke up. We found some 3 , and helped Sam sit up to take it. Robbie and I hoped that this would reduce his 4 and get him through the difficult time. If only the morning could come quickly; everything would become easier. 

Things went against our wishes. Sam's 5 developed from bad to worse. We called the emergency services, and in a short time an ambulance（救护车）stopped in front of our gate. Robbie and I helped the medical workers get to the 6 . 

We helped him go through many checkups. After all kinds of tests, we felt 7 to hear that he just got appendicitis（阑尾炎）. Luckily, Sam didn't need an operation because he was 8 to hospital in time and got timely treatment. 

At daybreak, Sam was much better. 9 making sure that he was taken good care of,Robbie and I rushed back to prepare for our classes. We were tired, but felt 10 for having done something good.
