A 10th grader at the St. Mary's School(SMS) home campus in Medford, Oregon, Sam recently had a one-month exchange study in Zhejiang Province. He not only improved his Chinese language skills, but also made new friends, enjoyed his favourite foods and experienced the Chinese lifestyle.

What was your first impression of China?

The people here were so nice and warm-hearted. They were willing to help me whenever I ran into trouble. On one of my first days in China, the Chinese headteacher (校长) of my school showed me around the city to give me a better understanding of the environment, the school, the culture, and the city's background.

What is your favourite food in China?

Chinese food is always delicious, and even though I am a vegetarian, the food has never let me down. I now have two favourite foods here. One is called baozi, and it is a type of steamed bun filled with meat or vegetarian fillings. It is a popular food for any meal, and I usually have it for breakfast. My other favourite food here is Mapo Tofu, a dish typically set in a spicy sauce.

Do you have a favourite book in Chinese?

The only Chinese book I have tried to read is one on the teachings of Confucius. While it was difficult to understand, I liked how insightful (有洞察力的) the stories were. One story tells me to look at things in a different way. My Chinese teacher recently taught me a poem by the famous Chinese poet Li Bai. He wrote about missing his hometown. I can understand these emotions because I sometimes feel homesick while I'm here in China.

Mr and Mrs Van Buren travel a lot because of their work. They don't have much time to stay at home, so they decide to take their children, Gina and Bill, to travel with them.  They study at home, and their "home" changes once a month.They are in different countries every month.

 Today, Gina and Bill are visiting a museum in Paris. Gina loves the museum very much. There are lots of wonderful paintings. She spends almost a day watching these beautiful and famous paintings.  Bill and Gina have been to many places around the world, so the easiest subject for them is Geography. They have learnt it from real life: They have visited a lot of countries and they have seen real lakes, rivers, mountains and other things. What's more, they have also learnt other subjects from their parents.  And Mr Van Buren teaches them languages. The children also use the internet a lot. They send their homework to their teachers and get notes from their classmates. 

Bill and Gina love to travel with their parents.

I came to China as an exchange student in 2018. I have lived in China for many years. Now I am 1 in Chinese culture.

I fell in love with it all by accident. One day, I saw some people writing Chinese characters with ink brushes. It was so amazing. Later I started to 2 many Chinese calligraphers, such as Wang Xizhi of the Jin dynasty.

I joined a 3 class four years ago. The teacher showed me many of his calligraphy (书法)works. I told myself that I would 4 hard and try to become as good as him.

At first, I followed the teacher carefully. As soon as the teacher wrote a character, I5 one. Before long I could write many characters. I was happy and believed that I have the 6 to learn the Chinese calligraphy well.

However, the teacher pointed out a problem in my calligraphy. He told me that Chinese calligraphy is a(n) 7 that comes from the heart and is not just about copying. He said that the 8 of doing it well is that the writer should think carefully about what he wants to show before writing.

I'm not sure if I 9 understood the teacher.But 10 , I have spent a lot of time thinking and practising. I hope one day I can know the essence(本质) of Chinese calligraphy.
