Young star shines

Over the years, skilled Chinese players have been doing very well in table tennis. Now, young athletes from Generation Z are becoming the stars of the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Born in 2000, Sun Yingsha has been given the nickname" Little Devil" by her fans. When she was little, Sun was sensitive to the sound of a table tennis ball hitting the ground." I felt I had some talent," she told China Daily.

When Sun first joined the reserve squad (预备队) of the national table tennis team, she was excited. Becoming a world top player like her idol Zhang Yining has always been her dream.

However, there have been challenges along the way. She took part in the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 and it was there that she faced huge losses." I was not well-rounded enough to win the gold medal in the women's singles," Sun said.

Sun believes that life is always full of ups and downs." Determination and courage can make a good athlete," she said." What keeps me going are the goals and dreams I set for myself."

At the 2023 Singapore Smash, Sun won the women's singles, the women's doubles and the mixed doubles, becoming the first athlete to get three gold medals at the tournament (锦标赛). Looking at the world ranking website, you can see Sun's name at the top of the women's singles, women's doubles and mixed doubles.

When talking about younger table tennis players, Sun encourages them to keep their love and stay focused. "If you truly love table tennis, I hope you can hold on to it," she said.

Pan Yuzhen,77, comes from Taijiang County, Guizhou Province. She is an inheritor（继承人）of Miao embroidery （刺 绣）。

"The girls in my hometown can embroider at an early age. When I was five years old, I learned embroidery from my mother and sister. Miao embroidery skills are not easy to learn, but I have learned all embroidery methods," Pan said. At first, Pan embroidered for her own use, but as she grew older and married, her skills were putto use for her family, creating beautiful embroidered clothes.

Pan's daughter Zhang Yanmei, who was born in 1977, suffered from an illness at the age of three. To treat her daughter and feed the family, Pan embarked on a journey, travelling to different cities to sell her Miao embroidery products.

In 1999, Zhang went to Beijing to join her mother. At that time, Pan had a store in a market. Here, she met a lot of foreign friends who were attracted by her embroidery skills and encouraged her to expand her business abroad."They advised me to go to foreign countries and sell cultural and creative products. Then I went to the US to do business connected with Miao embroidery," Pan said.

In 2016, Pan's career took a huge leap forward as she worked with a famous clothing brand (品牌) in China. With the help of the brand, Pan went to the UK to take part in different fashion shows. Now Pan is well-known. Pan hopes more young people can inherit Miao embroidery skills.

My name is Hamilton. I have the best job ever—a pet taxi driver. Why do I have this job? Here's the story. 

One day, my friend's dog is badly ill. They call many taxi, but no driver stops. Finally, my friend gets a car from his neighbor(邻居) and takes his dog to the animal hospital. This gives me a great idea: to start a car service(服务) just for people and their four-legged friends.

Sometimes we get lost or need help. We might need to find the washroom, a bookstore, or the parking lot. In these（ situation）, it's important to know how to ask for help politely. 

First, find someone who can help. Use polite ways to get （ someone） attention. You can start by saying "Pardon me. " or "Excuse me. " 

Next, try to ask help. Say "Could you please tell me the way to the washroom?" or "Could you show me how to get to the mall?" Remember （ say） "please" and "thank you". These small words show respect.

On a sunny Monday morning, I hurried to school as usual. As I the park near my neighborhood, I noticed two foreigners standing on the side of the road with confused （迷惑的） expressions.

When you ask someone a question in English, there are a lot of different phrases that will help you sound more polite. Here are some helpful tips on how to be polite when you ask questions or make requests!

If you speak with a low voice or don't change your inflection （变调）, you may sound direct or unfriendly. Smiling while you're talking can help you naturally have a cheery tone. 

Let the other person speak.

As the person gives you their answer, give them your full attention.  Don't think of what to say next while the person is talking, or else you might miss important information they're giving you. 

Do something to show that you're listening.

Turn your body toward the person you're talking to and slightly lean closer to show that you're interested in what they have to say. As they're talking, let them know that you're following the conversation. 

Follow up the conversation with more questions.

If you want to continue the conversation, ask the person something else.  In this way, you can get more information. For example, if you ask "Could you please tell me where the nearest bus stop is?" and the person answers "On Main Street", you could then ask, " Would you mind telling me which direction that is?"

Imagine sitting next to a stranger, both of you laughing at a funny video or feeling sad while watching something emotional （有感染力的）. Could that moment make you feel more connected to him or her?According to a recent study, it might! Researchers found that sharing experiences with strong emotions can help people feel connected, especially when they can see each other. 

In the study, scientists wanted to see how people feel when they watch emotional videos together. They asked people who didn't know each other to sit side by side and watch videos. The people sat 60 centimeters apart and looked at the same screen. They watched three different videos. One was funny, one was sad （a video about animals kept in small cages）, and one was normal （a video of a library）. In some pairs, the people could see each other, but in others, a curtain （帘子） was between them. 

Before the videos, the people were asked how they felt and what they thought of the person sitting next to them. While watching, the scientists checked their heartbeats, breathing, and skin to see how strong their feelings were. After watching all three videos, the people answered more questions about their emotions and how they felt about their partner. 

The study found something interesting. The funny and sad videos made people feel more than the library one. People who could see each other felt even stronger emotions. Most of all, the study showed that people felt more connected after watching emotional videos together—but only when they could see each other. This means sharing strong feelings, like laughing or feeling sad, can help people feel closer. It works even if they don't know each other. 

So next time you see a funny or touching video, share it with someone. You might feel a little closer—or even make a new friend!

On April 10, a special museum opened in Shanxi. It is inside Shanxi Experimental Secondary School in Taiyuan, the capital city of Shanxi. This is the first museum in the province to be built on a school campus. It helps students learn about old buildings and Shanxi's rich history. 

The museum is called the Ancient Architecture Campus Museum. It was made to help students understand the value of old buildings and learn how to protect them. A prelude exhibition titled "Ancient Architecture Technology Enters Campus" was also held. It used models, pictures, and digital tools to teach students in fun and easy ways. 

One student at the school, Ren Hongye, helped as a guide. She said she was proud to share what she had learned about old Chinese buildings. She found that her school lessons came to life in the museum. Another student, Song Jiaqi, said she enjoyed using computers to explore ancient buildings. It made her feel proud of Shanxi. 

The museum showed many exciting things. There was a model of the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda, the tallest wooden tower in the world. A 3 D model of Foguang Temple in Wutai county, Xinzhou city was also shown. There were colorful statues of stars from Yuhuang Temple in Jincheng city too. These helped students touch, see, and play with history using technology. 

At the opening, the school's principal said,  "I hope students will love Shanxi's culture and feel proud of it. " A culture expert, Lu Yi, said this museum was just the beginning. He hopes more schools will also build museums like this in the future. That way, more young people can learn about China's rich history and help protect it in the future. 

Two months ago, I went to China to teach English. During those days, I found something different—one difference is how people break the ice in conversations. "Isn't the weather nice today?" is a typical question heard in daily life in the UK. 

People in China have a habit of beginning conversations by asking questions like,  "Have you eaten yet?" Some might think this type of question is an invitation to lunch, but in fact, this is more of a greeting used to express concern for the person you're talking to. Although it's a question I'm still not used to being asked all the time, I think it's a really pleasant way to start conversations or to greet each other because it shows you care about the person you're talking to. 

Although these two ways to start conversations may be different, the one thing they have in common is that the topics affect everybody in our daily life. Everyone can relate to things like the weather or food at different mealtimes. One of the best ways to break the ice in a conversation with someone new is to talk about things you and the other person might have in common. I'm not sure I'll be able to break the habit of talking about the weather, but surely I think I could get used to talking more about food, especially as it's so delicious in China!
