The Solar System

Our solar system has eight planets that orbit the sun. The four closest to the sun are Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. They are called rocky planets because they have solid surfaces.

Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune are farther from the sun. These are gas giants—huge planets made mostly of gas. Saturn is famous for its beautiful rings made of ice and rock.

Earth is the only planet known to have liquid water and life. It takes about 365 days to orbit the sun. Mercury, the smallest planet, takes only 88 days to go around the sun.

The sun is at the center of our solar system. It provides light and heat for all the planets. Without the sun, there would be no life on Earth.

I'm Mingming. I have three friends in my class. They are Lily, Jack and Carl. We all think our school life is wonderful. My favorite class is English. Every day I answer the most questions in English classes. My teacher says I study English really well. But my friends don't like English. They have their favorite subjects.

Lily: English is a little difficult. I like history best because it's interesting. From history classes I can learn about the past. We have history classes on Tuesday and Thursday.

Jack: I'm an active boy in PE classes. Doing sports can make me strong and healthy. I'm good at running and swimming. I look cool in sports games. I'm lucky to have three PE classes every week.

Carl: I'm a quiet boy and I love art class best. I can draw colorful pictures. It's bad that we have only one art class every week.

It's seven o'clock. Jenny gets up and takes a shower. Next she gets dressed and goes to the kitchen to have breakfast.

Dinner time is at about 7:00 PM. Jenny helps her mother cook dinner. After dinner, Jenny's father cleans the kitchen. Jenny and her mother help him. Jenny likes staying and talking with her family. She usually tells her parents some interesting things at school. That's an important part of her everyday life. At a quarter to ten, it's time for her to go to bed.
