Have you ever done something that made you embarrassed(尴尬)? No one likes this feeling, but learning to deal with embarrassment can make you feel more confident.
What does embarrassment feel like?
Embarrassment makes you laugh, cry and want to hide under your bed forever. Falling over in a shop or calling your teacher "Mum" might feel like the end of the world, but everyone gets embarrassed sometimes. We all react(反应) differently, and what feels embarrassed to one person might be common for another. Childline, a charity for young people, says, "Whatever you're feeling embarrassed about, remember that it's natural."
Why do we feel embarrassed?
Scientists believe embarrassment is a way of teaching us not to repeat mistakes. You're more likely to feel embarrassed when you worry too much about what other people think of you. Even if you think everyone saw you with strawberry jam on your face, studies show that fewer people notice than you think.
How do we deal with embarrassment
If something isn't very serious, try making a joke out of it. "Laughter can show people(and yourself) that it isn't something to worry about," Childline says. If you are feeling embarrassed, other people may not have even noticed, so try acting like it's no big deal or take no notice of what happened. Sometimes we're embarrassed about the way we've behaved towards others. In that case, try saying how sorry you are and you regret what happened. "Telling someone can be a first step in moving on," says Childline.

When planning a vacation, many people consider the popular tourist sites they want to see. But that's not what my husband and I did when we planned our vacation to Japan. We thought about the kind of farm which we wanted to go.
Ours was far from a typical vacation. We were WWOOFing! WWOOF stands for World Wide Opportunities on Organic(有机的) Farms. The organization connects people interested in organic farming. WWOOFers help their hosts with daily activities. These include everything from picking vegetables to baking bread to feeding cows. Hosts provide WWOOFers with meals and places.
My husband and I felt like family when our host met us at the train station. She told us to call her Okasan—Mom, and her husband Otosan—Dad. Okasan and Otosan own Suwa farm, an organic vegetables farm that provides local people with fresh, healthy food. When no WWOOFers are around to help, the farm work is done by Okasan and Otosan.
As part of a family, we were able to enjoy the fruits of our labor(劳动) at every meal. Eating fresh vegetables three times a day and doing six hours of farm work certainly did our bodies good. Okasan and Otosan taught us to weed(除草) pick vegetables and clear rocks from fields. We also packed vegetables so they could be sold at the market.
WWOOFing is unlike anything I've ever done before. I can't wait to do it again.

John's 10-year-old son Tony is quite smart and perfectly able to read. However, it seems to be a big challenge for him to keep on reading. In order to solve this problem, he sent an email to Mr. Dad, an educationist, and asks him for some advice on improving children's reading ability. Here's the reply.
FROM: Mr. Dad
TO: John
SUBJECT: Re: How to improve children's reading ability
Hello, John
The fact is that a lot of children struggle(挣扎) with reading. However, because so many factors can cause reading problems, getting over them can sometimes be a hard process for everyone. That said, here are a few things you can do to help.
Take one of the books you loved when you were Tony's age and read it to him or take turns reading it to each other. If he makes mistakes, be patient and don't judge. Make reading a regular part of the night-time routine. Just make sure you pick something that will hold your son's attention.
Just because you're a mystery fan or read only history, it doesn't mean your son will develop interest in any of those things. In fact, if you are pushing your tastes on Tony, you are not really helping to solve his problems.
Don't be a snob(自以为是)
Most kids love movies. Did Tony like Ready Player One or Ender's Game? They are based on books. Staring with something your son is already interested in could help draw him into reading. If your goal is to get Tony interested in reading and improve his skills, what he's reading is less important than how much time he spends doing it.
Kids who have trouble reading often feel that there's something wrong with them. So work with your son to come up with manageable goals and make a big deal every time he achieves one. With time, gradually make the goal more challenging.
Best,
Mr. Dad
A. Don't be pushy
B. Share the book you are interested in
C. Celebrate small steps
D. Read to him-and have him read to you
If you are John, please give his son Tony a piece of advice on becoming a better reader. (答案不得超过10个单词)

It was good place, she thought, for a mother to go on strike(罢工). She was tired of (drive) them everywhere without thanks and doing more than her share of the work around the house. Until (thing) changed, Susan decided to stay up in the tree.
Susan's strike got her kids' attention, course. But that was not all that happened. Word of the fed-up mother spread. Before long, a camera crew from a TV show came into their yard. Now people all across America were going to find who drove the kids' mother up a tree.
As the cameras worked, the three kids stood with their father near the tree house. Kate, the host, had a question for (they). "What do you think about your mom on strike in that tree house?" she asked.
I am kind of embarrassed," said Misty.
"I'm really shocked," said Joseph. "I did not think it would go this far. My mom is much (crazy) than we thought."
Rachel added, "I think mom is so strange I can hardly believe it."
But Susan had made her point. If the kids (want) her back, they should know what to do. When the TV crew left, the kids went into their house (quick) and got busy. Not long after that, Susan climbed down from the tree and went back to being a mom.

Living on an island might sound wonderful. But what if you left for a trip and found you could never return? What if your home, and even the land it stood on, was gone forever? For people living in the Pacific Islands, this is really possible.
Why? Climate(气候) change. Climate change is causing the sea to rise. That's bad news for the Pacific Islands. Young people on the islands are even starting to wonder: Will they be the last generation(一代人)?
Not if the islanders have anything to do about it. These people are deeply connected to their homelands. The Pacific Islands are made up of 11 different countries: the Marshall Islands, Fiji, Samoa, and others. But now, those countries are working together. They're joining forces to fight climate change.
Why is climate change such a huge threat to this part of the world? Islands have low elevations(海拔). So they are among the first places influenced by rising sea levels. That's why countries of the Pacific Islands are working together to do their part.
But these are small countries. When it comes to climate change, can they make a big difference? They can, because most of the things that people on islands buy are brought by ships. This is very harmful to the environment. After all, ships put out almost 3 percent of the world's carbon emissions. That makes climate change worse.
Pacific Islanders realize the problem. So, in 2019, six countries got together: Fiji, the Marshall Islands, Samoa, Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands, and Tuvalu. They came up with a plan. They agreed to cut carbon emissions from shipping by 40 percent by 2030. And by 2050, they expect zero-carbon shipping.
How will they pull this off? They plan to use some really cool carbon-free technologies. They'll make use of solar and wind energy.
Sea levels are rising, but hopes aren't sinking in the Pacific Islands.
(1)、What is the bad news for the Pacific Islands according to the passage?A、Some Pacific Island countries have disappeared. B、The sea level is going up because of climate change. C、All the shipping to the Pacific Islands has been stopped. D、The Pacific Islanders have nothing to do about the climate change.(2)、The underlined word "threat" in Paragraph 4 probably means "____".A、risk B、step C、project D、development(3)、It can be inferred from the passage that ____.A、solar and wind energy will make climate change worse B、there will never be zero carbon emissions from shipping C、all the Pacific Islanders may leave their homelands by 2050 D、some Pacific Island countries may have hopes to make a difference(4)、The passage mainly talks about ____.A、why other countries are helping the Pacific Islanders fight climate change B、how some countries are working hard to develop carbon-free technologies C、how Pacific Island countries are working together to fight shipping pollution D、why Pacific Island countries put out so much of the world's carbon emissions -

A lot of animals travel from one place to another. We call this migration.
In Africa, large animals, like elephants and zebras, migrate to find food and water. They usually follow the same ways every year.
A lot of birds migrate to find food and better weather, too. They are usually birds that eat insects. They spend the summer in northern Europe, because there are lots of insects there. In the winter there aren't any insects, so the birds fly south to southern Europe and Africa.
Some insects migrate, too. In North America, millions of monarch butterflies fly south to spend the winter in Mexico, California and Florida, where it's warmer. They travel 50—65km each day and they travel about 1,125km.
Some fish migrate to breed(繁殖). Salmon(鲑鱼) can swim over 20,000km in their life. They are born in rivers in Ireland, Scotland and other places in northern Europe. The young fish swim down the river to the sea and into the Atlantic Ocean. They live in the ocean until they are adults. Then they return to the river where they were born. They lay their eggs in the river and then they usually die. Salmon do this, because their eggs are safer in the river. Other fish can't eat them.
Arctic terns(北极燕鸥) travel the furthest when they migrate. They spend the summer in the Arctic, but when winter comes they fly to the Antarctic, because it's summer there. The next year they fly back to the Arctic again. In one year these small birds travel 36,000km from one end of the earth to the other and back again. Nobody knows how they do it.
(1)、According to the passage, monarch butterflies in North America migrate to ____.A、find insects B、look for water C、find better weather D、produce young(2)、Adult salmon swim back to the river because ____.A、they won't be eaten by other big fish B、they want to lay eggs in a safer place C、they are getting ready to die there D、they want to go where they grew up(3)、Which of the following is TRUE about animals' migration?A、Salmon swim 20,000km each year. B、Some insects travel 1,125km each day. C、Most birds fly to southern Europe and Africa in summer. D、Elephants in Africa usually travel the same way each year.(4)、The example of Arctic terns in the last paragraph is used mainly to show ____.A、the distance of migration B、the purpose of migration C、the direction of migration D、the time of migration -

The silence of the pond(池塘) was broken by the first cry: "Found something!" A swimmer ducked (扎入) into the water with a lifeline connected to a boat. Soon, she appeared, holding a bright blue glass bottle. It was passed to another, then into the boat.
On a fine Sunday morning in May, a team of 10 women over 65 years old, known as the Old Women Against Underwater Rubbish (OWAUR), looked for rubbish across Nova Pond in Scotia.
When the team returned, they joked about the trip. "We didn't even know what it was," one swimmer said with a laugh, showing an electronic lighter they had found. "We had to ask a young person."
Part protection organization, part social club, OWAUR only accepted old women as its members. To improve the conditions of the ponds, the group made it its task to take rubbish away from them. The idea of this group was from a moment of Sandy , a retired(退休的) reporter. As a lifelong nature lover, she liked swimming in ponds. However, the world of the pond, which was a little polluted, made her worried. Then she came up with a slogan (标语):"OVER 65, IF YOU'RE HEALTHY ENOUGH, IS THE AGE OF ACTION."
Soon many people joined her. They found a sense of wonder at the pond cleanup moments. And their team could do a lot more than people might think.
When many people thanked OWAUR for what they had done, some questioned why they called themselves "old women". "You should call yourselves the Mermaids(美人鱼) Against Underwater Rubbish," they said.

Stephen Hawking, one of the world's most famous scientists, believed that humans will one day have to move into space. "Once we step into space, our future should be safe," he said.
① Today, many countries are all planning to send astronauts to Earth's closest neighbor: the moon. Some of these countries want to create space stations there within the next 10 years. These stations will prepare humans to visit and later live on Mars or other earthlike planets.
② Robert Zubrin, a rocket scientist, thinks humans should colonize(殖 民) space. He wants to start with Mars. Why? He thinks sending people to Mars will allow us to learn a lot of things—for example, the ability of humans to live in a very different environment. Besides, any progress we make in the fields of science, technology, medicine, and health will do good to people here on Earth.
③ Many people say it's too expensive. Also, most space trips are not short. A one-way trip to Mars, for example, would take at least six months. People traveling this kind of distance could face many health problems. Besides, these first people would find life especially difficult in space. On the moon's surface, for example, the sun's rays are very dangerous. People would have to stay indoors most of the time.
④ No matter what different concerns there are, sending people into space seems certain. In the future, we might see cities on the moon or even new human cultures on other planets. First stop: the moon.
(1)、According to the passage, why are some countries planning to build space stations?A、To develop space travel. B、To learn more about the moon's surface. C、To prepare humans to live on other planets. D、To cut down the number of people living on Earth.(2)、Which is the best place for the sentence "Not everyone thinks sending humans into space is a smart idea."?A、① B、② C、③ D、④(3)、What is the purpose of this passage?A、To give reasons for and against colonizing space. B、To describe what life would be like on the moon. C、To compare the environments of Mars and the moon. D、To introduce progress in space science and technology. -

In my opinion, the wheel is the most important thing that human beings have ever invented. It might seem strange to say that something so simple-looking and so common could be so important.
Firstly, wheels influence almost every part of our lives. Wheels are used, for example, in clocks, engines (发动机) and transport. If you visit just one factory, you will see how important wheels are.
Secondly, wheels play a great part in food production. Wheels are used to grind (磨碎) different kinds of corn into flour (面粉). We also need wheels to transport the wheat. If we did not have the wheel, we would have much difficulty in food production.
Thirdly, our world would be completely different if we did not have the wheel for transport. Before the wheel was invented, people used to have to travel on foot or by riding on an animal. They didn't know where to put their heavy bags. That is what we would be doing now if we did not have the wheel. Everything would take longer to do.
We would be back to the Stone Age if the clever ancient people had not invented the wheel. Our modern world would simply be impossible.
A. It took long to finish their journeys.
B. You will see wheels on almost every machine.
C. The wheel is surely the most important invention of all time.
D. They are then used to mix flour and other foods into bread.
E. But if you consider the following points, you will probably agree with me.

Are kids getting too much praise? Too much praise may be doing kids more harm than good.
A cover story in Scholastic Instructor magazine asks whether kids today are over-praised. The concern is that while trying to build up kids' confidence, parents are paying little attention to kids' real goals and achievements. In a recent study, eighth graders in Korea and the United States were asked whether they were good at math. Among the American students, 39 percent said they were excellent at math, compared to just 6 percent of the Korean eighth graders. But the reality was somewhat different. The Korean kids scored far better than the over-confident American students.
The disadvantage of too much praise is that kids may start to focus on the reward rather than what they are learning. Worse, when a student fails, whose confidence comes from a blind sense of achievement rather than his or her actual abilities, the result can be devastating(毁灭性的). This doesn't mean we shouldn't praise our kids or that teachers shouldn't try to build up their students' self confidence. But self-confidence should be the result of good grades and real achievements, not empty praise from others.
Last month, Cognitive Daily reported that parents and teachers should be specific rather than general when they offer praise. An example of general praise is telling a child, "You're smart." Specific praise would be to say, "You did a good job on reading." or "You did great on your math test." Kids who receive general praise about their abilities are more likely to show "helpless" behavior when they meet with problems with learning, compared with kids who receive specific praise about their achievement on a task. A child who knows she's a smart girl feels defeated(挫败的) if she has trouble reading a sentence. But a child who has been told she is a good reader is more likely to have confidence in that specific ability and work a little harder to deal with a more difficult book.

On a June afternoon in 1752, the sky began to get dark over the city. As the storm broke, most people surely hurried inside, but not Benjamin Franklin. He decided it was the perfect time to fly a kite. Franklin had been waiting for a chance like this. He wanted to show the connection between lightning(闪电) and electricity, and to do so, he needed a storm.
He walked into field, and flew a kite with a piece of rope tied to it. A key was tied to the rope. The lightning hit the kite, and electricity passed through the rope to the key. Franklin then touched the key with his finger and got an electric shock (电击). This, he said, proved(证明) the electrical nature of lightning.
For many years, schools have taught the story of Franklin's experiment. Millions of schoolchildren have been amazed by his courage and his scientific spirit of looking for the truth. However, new research suggests that the story may be fiction instead of fact. Although Franklin's experiment took place, more than one scientist has questioned what really happened. It's true that he did the experiment with the rope and the key. But scientists all agree that if Franklin had actually touched the key, he would certainly have died from the electric shock.
Scientists often question accepted ideas because they want to find out the facts. Some have even questioned the story about the apple that fell on Newton's head. Many reports suggest that although the falling apple certainly provided ideas, there is nothing to show that the apple actually hit him on the head.
In fact, fiction is often more interesting than the truth.People have been more encouraged by Franklin's spirit than by the facts themselves. But in science, facts should be tested by experiments and research, and we should not always believe everything we read or hear even if it is a great story.
