 Potatoes are common in our daily lives. But they have an interesting history in China. 

Potatoes came to China from South America in the late Ming Dynasty （朝代）. At that time, not many people bought them. They were so special and people didn't know how to make them into dishes. But as time went by, people found it was easy to grow potatoes. This was because potatoes can bear hard growing conditions （状况）. So more farmers started growing potatoes. And people knew more and more ways of cooking potatoes. At first, they found roasted potatoes tasted quite good with a little salt. Then they created （创造） more dishes like Stewed Beef with Potatoes and Hot and Sour Shredded Potatoes. But people didn't just grow potatoes for their taste. Potatoes could give them much energy, so they wouldn't feel hungry too early after eating them. 

And here is another story about potatoes. In the Qing Dynasty, some villagers thought potatoes were unhealthy. So an official （官员） cooked and ate potatoes in front of them. Then many villagers tried potatoes too. In this way, he encouraged more people to grow potatoes. 

Today, potatoes are welcome all over China. And you can find them in many different dishes. 

Summer holiday is coming, but you should know the following to stay safe. 

Stay in when the thunderstorm is coming. Cut off the power in the house because lightning can travel through power lines（电线）. And stay away from windows. If you are outside, look for a house quickly. Don't get close to trees. 

It's dangerous because they can attract（吸引） lightning easily. When there isn't lightning for half an hour, you can go out. 

When the temperature is too high, you should drink much water. Stay inside between 10 a. m. and 4 p. m. and close the windows. Open the windows and take a walk in the early morning or the evening. If you have to go out, wear light clothes, a hat and sunglasses. You can walk under the trees. 

When you meet a hailstorm（冰雹）, move inside fast. And don't stay near the windows because they're easy to break. If you can't find any houses, cover your head with your arms, bag, jacket, or anything thick. When you are in a car, park it away from trees and power lines. Stay inside the car. Wait about 15 minutes before going outside after the hailstorm.

My Favorite Chinese Festival

In the past, many students practiced English with their pen friends-they sent letters to people around the world. However, we now send emails to others and chat with people who live quite faraway on the Internet.

Here's some advice on how to succeed in your online language exchanges（交流）.

How to start a conversation when speaking English online? When you speak to somebody online, start by asking "Yes or No" questions. Use questions such as "Do you like…?" or "Can you…?" or "Have you ever…?"

Remember your goal. You are trying to learn about the other person. Think about things you enjoy and share your own experiences to find that you have similar interests. If you only ask questions, you will sound like a policeman or a policewoman!

How to keep a conversation going? Listen carefully. In that way, you can get to know somebody well. When you know him or her well, you will have more to talk about. Then ask follow-up questions. After you "listen", use what you "hear" to learn more about that person. Use "open ended（开放性）" questions, such as "What do you think of…?" or "What was the most interesting experience…?"

Besides, remember some basic rules for online language exchanges:

Be patient. Do not try to find a good friend right away.

Be careful. Don't give any personal information on the Internet, especially your address, telephone number, and even your real name. It's very dangerous.

Do you think that living a hungry life is last century's story? Well, it may be this century's headline. 

The world has growing worries about a global food shortage. Right now, there are still 870 million hungry people in the world, according to a survey of the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization. Children can't escape this, either. Around fifteen million children die of hunger each year. 

What's causing food shortages? There are several reasons. 

There are now more droughts and floods. This is very harmful to farmers and their ability to grow food. 

Besides, with the growing population, feeding everyone becomes more difficult. There are a little more than seven billion people in the world. By 2050, the world population will be more than nine billion. 

Another reason is food waste. The average person throws away 50kg of food every year. 

How can we help with food shortages? The easiest way is to cut down on food waste. 

Next time before throwing away the food on your plate, just think how much work has been done to make it. By buying less, we waste less. This takes the pressure off producing so much food. And it helps to solve the problem of food shortage. 

You can also ask your schoolmates to join you. 

In 2013, researchers at Kansas State University in the US put up short anti-waste slogans (标语) in dining rooms, "Think Before You Waste". Guess what happened? Students wasted fifteen percent less food after that!
