1、Do you know you can multiply by drawing just a few lines? Line multiplication was invented long years ago. It might help you when you don't have a calculator.

►Work out the place values (位值) of your numbers.
For example, you are calculating 34×12. The first number has a 4 in the ones place (个位) and a 3 in the tens place (十位). Your second number has a 2 in the ones place and a 1 in the tens place.

►Draw parallel (平行的) lines to represent (代表) your first number.
Draw three lines to represent the tens place. Draw four lines above them to represent the ones place.

►Draw parallel lines to represent the second number.
Draw one line to represent the tens place. The line should cross over the lines from the first number. Then, draw two lines below it to represent the ones place.

►Draw dots at each point where the lines meet each other.

►Circle the dots representing the ones place and add them up.
Here, you can count eight dots and get the ones place of your answer: 8.

►Circle the dots representing the tens place and add them up.
You would count 10 dots here. Like any time you add or multiply, once a digit (数位) reaches 10, you need to carry (进位). In this example, you would put a 0 in the tens place and carry the 1 over to the hundreds place.

►Count the dots representing the hundreds place.
You would count three dots here. Don't forget the 1 you've carried over. Calculate 3+1, and the hundreds place of your answer is 4.

►Write down your answer.
For 34×12, the answer is 408.

2、Numbers are not just numbers. They have some meanings. Let's see some of the lucky and unlucky numbers in the world.
As for the number 3, people in Sweden think all good things come in threes. They think three is the first option for them to get new numbers or room numbers. But people in Japan don't think so. They don't like taking photos when there are only 3 people. They think something bad will happen to the one in the middle.
In China, people think the number 6 means everything goes well. During the Spring Festival, many parents give 666 yuan to their children as lucky money. But the number 6 is not popular in most English-speaking countries. It has something to do with bad luck. So it's not wise to use it when you talk with your friends from the UK or the USA.
The number 9 also has a good meaning. It sounds like Chinese Pinyin "jiǔ", meaning a long time. In Norway, 9 is a lucky number, too. There are many nice stories about it. But people in Japan don't like it. When they say it in Japanese, it's just like the word "ku" and it means something painful.
Some people think the sounds of numbers have nothing to do with their meanings. And lucky numbers are just for fun. In my eyes, if some numbers make you feel lucky, just use them as you like. But don't forget to work hard at the same time. I think it's the hard work that can always bring people good luck, not only the numbers themselves.
(1)、What does the underlined word "option" mean in Paragraph 2?A、Skill. B、Choice. C、Subject. D、Problem.(2)、Who may get good luck according to the passage?A、Frank from Sweden who lives in Room 4046. B、Lily from Japan who takes photos with her two friends. C、George from Norway who opens his new shop on June 9th. D、Helen from the UK who gets 666 yuan from her Chinese friend.(3)、Which of the following would the writer most probably agree with?A、With lucky numbers, everything can go well. B、Everyone should have his or her lucky numbers. C、With lucky numbers, people also need to work hard. D、Lucky numbers can bring good luck because of their sounds.(4)、What can be the best title of the passage?A、Different Meanings of Photos B、Different Stories about the Number 9 C、Different Numbers in the Spring Festival D、Different Lucky and Unlucky Numbers -

When I entered middle school, Mr. Jackson taught us science. On the first day of class, he gave us a talk about an animal called "wampus". Later we had a2.
When the exam paper was3 to me, I was surprised and sad. There was a big red "×" through each of my answers. I failed. But how come? Anyway, on the test paper, I had written down what Mr. Jackson said in class.
Then I realized that no one4 the exam at all. What had happened?
"Very simple," Mr. Jackson explained. "I had5 all that story about the wampus. There had never been any such animal, so the information in your notes was not correct. Do you expect to get high marks for incorrect answers?"
There was no need to say we were6. What kind of test was this? What kind of teacher was he?
How could we believe he gave us so much information about an animal that had not been there at all? How was it possible for us students to7 what the teacher taught us?
"The zeros on your papers will be8 in your grade books," he said. And he did it.

16、缺词填空
The new year brought new desks for students at Vallecito Elementary School, in San Rafael California. The last three of the school's 22 classrooms changed f seated desks to standing desks. "It's now the first all-standing school,"Juliet Starrett told TFK. She started the group called "Stand-Up Kids".
Starrett's daughters—Georgia, 10 and Caroline, 7—a this school. They are excited about their new desks. "You feel h, you're less tired, and you're more active," Georgia says. Some of the desks have wheels(轮子) and fidget bars(烦躁调节杆). The bars let kids m in a way that doesn't trouble the class. Wheels allow the desks to be moved e. The desks can also be changed into different heights. Kids take breaks by s on the floor or on stools.
According to Mark Benden, director of the Texas A&M Center, standing workers are more focused and h. He says his research shows that kids using standing desks are busier and burn more calories(卡路里). In December, researchers in New Zealand, Australia, and the UK shared similar findings and a more schools to use standing desks.
However, not everyone believes that standing is better than sitting. Some parents and teachers w that kids may get tired and standing for a long time may be bad for their health. And standing desks are more expensive.
Benden says b sitting and standing desks can cause problems if they are not the proper height. "Our message should not be ‘Sit less, stand more'," he says, "but ‘Sit less, move more'."
