Chinese people usually give money in red envelopes(信封) as gifts.This is one of the most  New Year's traditions in China. In fact,there are similar traditions in some other Asian countries  JapanSouth Korea, and Malaysia.

During the New Year's season, kids in Japan usually receive otoshidama  means lucky money in Japanese. Similar to theChinese tradition, Japanese place the money in envelopes, these envelopes are in many colors rather than just red.

In South Korea, parents and grandparents give  lucky money. However, they don't use envelopes. Instead, the money is  in lucky bags.

In Malaysia, there is a special local holiday in spring. People usually give money in green envelopes to the guests when they come to   them during the holiday. They also give money to the elders to wish  good health and long life.

Whether through different colors of envelopes or lucky bags, these traditions show people's wishes to  joy and good luck to their loved ones. As we celebrate the Chinese New Year , remember that the true value of red envelopes is not in the money but in the act of giving.

Seeing changes in China

It was a warm spring day in 

2021.  Chen Beier, a reporter and TV host from HongKong, travelled to a small village called Atule' er. The village lies on an 800-metre-high eliff. People can only reach it by climbing a steel (钢的) ladder with 2, 556 steps.  It is really dangerous. 

Chen did not go there for fun or adventure.  She went to make a documentary (纪录片)  called No Poverty Land. 

In February 2021, China reached an important goal.  It got rid of poverty.  Many people found it hard to believe because there were once lots of poor villages. In order to show the real living conditions of the people, Chen set out to make No Poverty Land. Her journey was difficult. On the way up the ladder, she felt very tired. She was afraid of heights too. The villagers asked her to give up, but she kept climbing. 

The steel ladder has only been used for six years.  Before that, villagers used a dangerous rattan (藤的)ladder. The government also built new houses for villagers at the foot of the mountain. 

The documentary lets people clearly see the great improvements in poor areas.  China has changed greatly. What Chen did shows us a lesson: instead of only talking about changes, we should show people the - truth with our own eyes. 

For a long time,  Deng Qingming was known to the public as a backup  (替补的)  astronaut who had never flown into space. "But after nearly twenty-five   of waiting, his dream to fly into space has come true. 

Deng was born in a village in Jiangxi Province in 1966.  As   parents worked on farms, Deng needed to care for his younger sisters and brothers.  Deng's childhood dream was to go to college and find a good job to   his family. 

When he was in high school,  China's Air Force  looked for some new pilots  (飞行员)  at his  school.  Deng all the tests.  In  1998,  he  became  a member of the   group  of  Chinese astronauts, including Yang Liwei, Nie Haisheng and Zhai Zhigang. 

"I was once very sad and even in tears, but I never lost heart, " Deng once said.  , after a long wait, Deng joined the mission(任务) of Shenzhou 15. Though his   to space was a little longer than his teammates,  Deng always  trained  like others.  He is already a grandfather,  but the 58-year-old man has the passion(热情) as astronauts who are younger than him. 

"You are the  hard-working person I' ve ever seen, " Deng's daughter, who also works for China's Space Program, said in a letter  to his father. "I feel proud to work with you, my dear dad,  and you will always my hero. "

Dreams are very important in our lives.  What kind of dream  you have? Some people dream of travelling  around the world,  while others  hope to do something great for their country.   course, it is not always easy for us to make our dreams come true.  We may face many difficulties.  But great people never give  , even when they have to wait for a long time.   stories teach us to keep trying and never lose hope.  Today, I would like   share a story about a Chinese astronaut. 

The world was  completely different  when your  great-grandparents  were  young.   There  were  no  high-tech products at that time.    So it took longer for people to know about what was going on in the world. 

In order to stay in touch with friends or family, people chose to write letters.  From ancient times, most of the letters were carried from one place to another by horse.    By the early 1900s, planes were used as a faster way to carry letters across places.  As time went by, new inventions (发明) made it easier to reach friends and family in a short time. 

 Besides making calls, we can also do many things with them,  such as taking photos, paying money and so on.  Computers also have made some of the biggest changes in communication.  The Internet helps send emails around the world in a short time.   

Although new technology helps us keep in teach with each other, some people atill enjoy sending and getting letters.   Share it with us.

As"Father of Hybrid Rice",  Yuan Longping got over great difficulties and spent his whole life working to reduce world hunger and helping to feed the country with large population.  He received the Medal of the Republic in 2019. 

Wu Mengchao, "Father of Chinese Hepatobiliary Surgery(肝胆外科)", kept saving people's lives for nearly eighty years.  He performed more than 16, 000 operations during his life.  Holding the surgeon's knife for such a long time deformed his fingers.  Wu once said, "It would be my greatest happiness if I could work at the operating table until my dying day. "

In 1969, in order to work out the problem of treating malaria (疟疾), Tu Youyou, a pharmacologist, took on the job as head of a research team.  She and her teammates performed different kinds of experiments  (实验). However, the results were not satisfying. Instead of giving up, they carried on trying.  Finally, in 1972, they made it! In 2015, at the age of 85, she received a Nobel Prize. 

Thomas Edison, the inventor of the light bulb (灯泡), believed that every failure was a step towards success.  He once said, "If I find 10, 000 ways sometimes won't work, I haven't failed. I am not discouraged, because every wrong try is another step forward. "
