My Book Review of Journey to the West

Reading makes a full man. My favorite book is Journey to the West.

Science fiction has always been a source of wonder and imagination. It allows us to explore possible futures and ask deep questions about  (we) existence. Many great writers have contributed to this genre.

Jules Verne, a French author, is often (call) the "Father of Science Fiction". His stories were full of inventions that seemed impossible at the time  later became reality. Isaac Asimov, an American writer, was known for his scientific accuracy. His Foundation series  (influence) generations of writers since the 1950s.

In China, Liu Cixin has become a leading voice in science fiction. His novel The Three-Body Problem won the Hugo Award in 2015,  (make) him world-famous. His works deal with the destiny of humanity and the universe.

Sometimes science fiction feels very real, as in the story of Tina and Tom. The two children saw  alien spaceship crash in the forest. They were frightened and ran away. Later, they told their parents,  refused to believe them. But at the end of the story, the children spread  (they) wings and flew to school. This surprising ending suggests that perhaps the children themselves were not from Earth.

Time travel is another popular theme in science fiction. In H.G. Wells' The Time Machine, the Time Traveller argues that time is the fourth dimension. He believes that humans can move in time just  they move in space. Although others think it is nonsense, the idea  time travel continues to fascinate us.

Have you heard of the World Science Fiction Convention (Worldcon)? It was held in Chengdu from October 18 to 22, 2023. Worldcon is the biggest sci-fi event in the world. It has been held since 1939. This was the first time the event had been held in China.

During the event, the winners of the year's Hugo Awards were announced (宣布). The awards are very famous in the science fiction world. They are voted on by members of Worldcon. Chinese sci-fi writers and artists enjoyed a big night on October 21.

The Space-Time Painter won the Hugo Award for Best Novelette. It was written by part-time writer Hai Ya. "I'm very lucky," he said. "It's like my dream shining into reality." He hopes that his works can make more people think about technology, time and art.

Besides that, Zhao Enzhe won the Best Professional Artist award. The artist has worked in the game industry for more than 20 years. He has been making covers for China's Science Fiction World magazine for a long time. The magazine is the best-selling one of its kind in the world.

In addition, China's Zero Gravity Newspaper won the Best Fanzine award. Four works by Chinese writers were shortlisted (入围) for the Best Short Story award.

Over the past years, a lot of Chinese science fiction works have been translated into many different languages. They have attracted (吸引) more and more readers around the world. The influence of Chinese science fiction keeps growing!

In 2075, fifteen-year-old Alex lives in a floating (漂浮的) city on the ocean that runs on clean energy. Robots do most housework, but school is still full of learning. 

One sunny morning, Alex's teacher gives some special homework, "Design something that can make the world a better place." His classmates are quickly coming up with exciting ideas— flying gardens, river-cleaning drones (无人机) , and food printers (打印机). Alex, however, wants to make something small but meaningful. 

He imagines a "Smile drone". This small drone can cheer up lonely people by playing their favourite music, sharing a joke, or bringing them a small gift. It uses AI to learn what makes each person happy. He hopes it can bring warmth and joy to their busy and high-tech (高科技的) world. 

When Alex shares his idea, some classmates say that this is too simple. But the teacher smiles and says, "In a world of machines, the greatest invention (发明)  is one that cares for human hearts."

Months later, a technology company (公司) makes Alex's idea real. They send him a message, "Your kindness inspires us. Thank you."

That day, Alex understands— no matter how technology develops, love and care always matter most. Machines can build cities, but only people can build connections.

Three friends—Mia, Alex, and Lily—received an invitation to a time travel experiment in a science lab (实验室). They went there with curiosity. After knowing what they would do, they started their journey with a mix of excitement and worry. 

Suddenly, they found themselves in a different place and saw old shops and people in old-fashioned clothes. That was a busy 18th-century market! While exploring, they noticed a boy Oliver with a worried look. "My father's treasure map was lost but our village needed it."

"We can help," Mia said. Oliver took them to an old library where he last saw the map. There, they found a paper with strange symbols. "It might lead us to the map!" said Alex. After hours of hard work together, they followed the symbols to a forest and found the map. 

With the map, Oliver and his father found lots of gold and silver for their village. Everyone was happy. The friends felt a sense of pride to help people in the past. They realized the past and future are connected—understanding the past was key to a better future. 

"What an experience! I couldn't believe we actually did it!" said Lily on the way back to the lab. They were grateful for the chance to explore the wonders of time. They discovered the power of curiosity, teamwork and friendship. They knew this was only the start. With hope and excitement, the young time travelers were ready for new adventures.
