How to Improve Our Memory?

Memory is very important in our life. Here, I'd like to share something about my memory. 

A: Hey, Mark! How time flies! We' re graduating soon!

B: Yes, Lucy. It's amazing how fast three years has passed.

B: My best memory of junior high is the school trip in Grade

A: Of course. That was such a great trip! Since junior high, I feel like I' ve changed a lot.

When you need to remember something, do you write it down on paper? Probably not— you are more likely to just type (打字) some words on your phone, right? For years, new technology from computers to tablets (平板电脑) has been taking the place of writing by hand. In 2016, schools in Finland even stopped teaching writing. But is our move away from writing by hand influencing our brains? A new study says it might be. 

Researchers at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology asked 36 university students to write down information using either a pen or a keyboard. They also looked at the students' electrical brain activity, and found that their brain connectivity patterns (连接模式) were much more elaborate when writing by hand than when using a keyboard. Past research has found that this connectivity is the key to helping the brain have memories and record new information. 

One of the researchers, Audrey van der Meer, said that forming letters by hand also helps children lear n the difference between very similar letters like"b" and"d", because their bodies get to feel what it's like to make the shapes. 

According to the researchers, it's important for students to keep learning how to write by hand.  It's also important to know what kind of writing is best for what situation. 

"Students learn more and remember better when taking handwritten notes, while using a computer with keyboard may be more practical when writing a long paper or passage, " Audrey van der Meer said. 

"Cooking is love made visible". That is what my grandmother always told me. Thanks to her, I love cooking. 

It's a great way for me to   my love with others. Every time I sit at the table, after cooking for my family, we  memories. The smells and the food's taste, along with our conversations, connect to each other. What wonderful memories I have!

One of my   memories is my grandmother's pumpkin pie. She always made it in autumn, when the weather got colder.  Her friendly kitchen was the perfect place to warm up and enjoy a taste of the changing   .  I still remember the days when the  of cinnamon (肉桂皮) filled the room with sweetness. Now, every time I smell cinnamon, I think of my  pumpkin pie. My grandmother told me about her first pumpkin pie. When she  a college student in the US, she stayed with a host family.  One year around Thanksgiving, the hostess  her how to make a pumpkin pie.  It tasted so delicious that now she still remembers the sweet flavor  . 

"Home Sweet Memory" means the happy times we have at home. These memories are like warm blanket (毛毯). When we are sad or afraid, they make us feel safe  calm. They help us grow stronger and believe  ourselves. They show us how to be kind and understanding to others. They also remind us  we come from and who we are. With these sweet memories, we always have hope and courage. Last but not least, they give us the power to  any challenge in life. 

Have you ever wondered why you can still ride a bike years after learning, even if you haven't practiced? Or how you quickly recognize a friend's face in a crowded photo?The answers lie in the amazing mechanism (机制) of human memory— something far more developed than any AI memory system we have today. 

Our memory is mainly built in a brain part called the hippocampus (海马体). When we experience something new, like a new song or a family gathering, brain cells fire together, creating a short-term pattern. Think of this as saving a note on your phone. 

For this memory to last, it must be consolidated— moved from the"notes-folder (记忆文件夹)" to a longer-lasting memory storage in the brain, in this way we can remember and never forget something. This process often happens during deep sleep, which is why a good night's rest beats staying up late to study hard for exams. 

But memory isn't perfect. Every time we recall a memory, we might change it a little before st oring it again, like changing a photo and saving the new version. This is why two people can remember the same event differently, even if they were both there. 

So, how can we improve this system? Active review— connecting new information to things you already know—is more useful than simple repeating. Linking a new English word to a familiar scene, for example, makes it easier to remember. Regular review and healthy sleep are the basics of strong, long-lasting memories. 

Judy lives by the sea with her mother and grandmother. Her mother works very hard in a restaurant. Judy wants to do something to make her mother happy. 

Her mother has collected many kinds of shells (贝壳) since she was young. One day Judy asked her mother why she stopped collecting shells. Mum said she was busy working and had no time.  "But I like looking at them, "she said, "Every shell reminds me of a happy time in my life. " Her mother picked up a white shell and said, "This is a Scotch Bonnet. I detected it the day before you were born. " She showed Judy one shell after another, and then said, "I' ve always wanted a Queen Helmet Conch. But it's hard to find. " Hearing that, Judy knew what surprise she could give her mother. 

For the next few weeks, Judy's grandmother took her to the beach every day. She looked and looked, but she didn't find a Queen Helmet Conch anywhere. 

"Maybe you can buy one for her, " said Grandma. But Judy didn't agree. 

One day Judy saw the tip (尖端) of a shell sticking out of the sand. She dug it up. It was a beautiful QueenHelmet Conch!

That night, when Judy's mother came home, Judy showed her the shell. "She spent weeks looking for this, "Grandma said. 

Mum said happily, "Thank you for what you have done for me. "

Sleep plays a key role in memory.  During deep  sleep, the brain strengthens what we have learned.  Without enough sleep, the brain fails to store new information properly. 

A study from a university found that teenagers who slept less than seven hours a night performed worse on memory tests than those who slept eight to ten hours. During deep sleep, the brain replays the day's events and"saves" important memories. This process, called memory consolidation (巩固), helps turn short-term memories into long-term ones. If you don't get enough deep sleep, the brain misses this chance. 

Experts suggest that teenagers should aim for eight to ten hours of sleep.  Avoiding screens before bed and keeping a regular sleep schedule can improve sleep quality. So next time you think about staying up late to study, remember: a good night's sleep might be more helpful.
