She was one of the most important writers of the 20th century. Her stream-of-

consciousness(意识流)writing style deeply influenced modern writing. Stream-of-consciousness focuses on the "flow"of thoughts and inner feelings of a character. This was very different from most writing at that time. She once wrote a short novel called The Mark on the Wall. It focuses on what the main character is thinking about after seeing a mark on a wall. She thought it was important for writers to care about "an ordinary mind on an ordinary day". 

Billie Holiday

1915~1959, USA, jazz singer

She is oflen described as a genius. Her voice not only moved audiences, but also shook  American society. During her time, American society was still segregated(种族隔离的). As an  African-American, Holiday lived a hard life. But____. She worked with white bands in the  1930s, which was groundbreaking(开拓性的)at that time. She recorded a song called Strange  Fruit that was about African-Americans who suffered from pain. She taught Americans to   question their segregated society. 

Tu Youyou

1930～present, China, chemist

She is a chemist who studies traditional Chinese medicine. She started to look for a cure  for malaria in the 1960s. At that time, almost half of the world's population was at risk of  suffering from the disease. However, she found qinghaosu in a plant in 1971 that could cure  malaria. In 2015, she received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. She is the first  Chinese woman to win a Nobel Prize.
