Facial recognition technology has been widely used for a long time. But not many people think of its other uses.
A farm in China has started developing a facial recognition system for goats. Yes, goats, not people. Shanghai-based Vert City Farm said its goat facial recognition system will increasingly be put into use in the near future, monitoring the behavior and health of the goats by setting up small cameras around the farm.
The system has been in development since 2019. The system can tell between different goats and give warnings to farms when a goat is sick— or at least, not in the best of health. "It uses special technology to show the goat's body temperature and draw the farm's attention if the goat's body temperature rises above 40℃, " said Huang, a manager at the farm. To make the farm's facial recognition system work, more than 1, 000 goats have been chipped so far.
The technology makes life and work easier for farm workers. Before the system, they had to go around the farm several times a day to watch the goats' activities.
