Do you know magpies? How much do you know about this kind of bird?

In the Chinese culture, people call magpies xique. It means "the bird of (happy)". People think that (see) magpies can bring them good luck. The birds even have amazing job in the Chinese story of the Qixi Festival. In the story, magpies (build) a bridge in the sky for Niulang and Zhinu so that they could (get) together. magpies stand for (代表) true love, too.

Magpies have black and white feathers with blue tails. With their special "zhazhazha" sounds from early morning to night, it is not difficult people to find them. You can always see them sing on the roof or in the trees.

Magpies have some very interesting living (habit). They always live around humans. Sometimes they may look for food on the ground but not eat it right now. Instead, they will save the food for the future.

Heye and Huahua, two famous pandas at Chengdu Panda Base (熊猫基地), almost everyone in China knows them and it seems that it is good luck to see these two pandas successfully through crowds around their panda house. In the base, Heye and Huahua's life is very comfortable. They can enjoy fresh bamboo and a lot of rich meals every day, but also can freely move in the panda house and enjoy the love of people.

Hongcun is a beautiful village in Anhui.

The quiet village is near Mount Huangshan. It has a long history. The old houses keep their styles (风格) from the old times. If you walk on the old streets, you'll feel like traveling back in the past.

Besides old houses, Hongcun has a famous pond (池塘) called Moon Pond. It is a large half-moon lake in the center of the village. It is always a popular place.

In Chinese culture, the full moon stands for prosperity (繁荣). Although the full moon carries that good wish, the half moon appears for longer than the full moon. So people made the half-moon pond, and they hoped they might always keep prosperity.

Some animals in the sea sleep in strange ways. Fish sleep with their eyes open. They seem to look ahead far into the sea while they rest. Then a bubble will be formed around them. The bubble protects them from harm while they sleep.

Some animals sleep under the ground. Chipmunks (花栗鼠) sleep curled up (蜷缩) in a ball. Their beds are made of leaves and grass. In winter, they sleep for two weeks and wake up to eat the stored food. Then they go back to sleep for another two weeks before waking up again. Some desert frogs dig underground holes during the hot, dry season. A frog may stay in its hole for months.

High above the ground, monkeys find leafy places in trees each evening before they sleep. The tall trees help to keep monkeys safe during the night. Some insects even sleep under the leaf that will be their next meal. A bee may climb down into a flower to rest. When it climbs out the next morning, it is rested and ready for work.
