Born in a small village, I saw how busy farmers were in spring and what the season meant to them. Spring is a time when the land wakes up from sleep, and the fields are ready for crops. If you are lazy in spring, you will get nothing in autumn. So, farmers seem to compete with time in spring. 

When I was a little girl, every weekend I was busy planting crops. Whatever it was, I had fun and learned a lot. For example, when we planted potatoes, we needed to cut the sprouted potatoes into pieces and make sure every piece of "seed" had one or two sprouts. It was really like a math game.

Farm work is also teamwork. That's why every spring field is busy with people of all ages working in it. While planting beans, my father dug small holes, and I put some seeds into each hole. The work was hard and boring, but when we worked together, it seemed easier and more interesting. 

I felt the magic of life in spring as well. In a few weeks, the seeds sprouted, encouraging us to care for them by watering and so on. As time went by, they grew into healthy plants. At that time I was really proud of how hard I had worked. 

Because of these wonderful childhood experiences, I hold such a special feeling for spring. 

The Summer Solstice, or xiazhi in Chinese, is the day of the year with the most hours of daylight. It's generally on June 2lst or June 22nd every year. The hot days of summer come after the day. 

There is a tradition to have cold noodles on that day. It has a long history. We can read about the tradition in many old books. As time goes by, Chinese people still have this tradition, but they have different ways of cooking now. For example, many people enjoy cold noodles with sesame sauce (芝麻酱) and vegetables now. 

Why do people eat cold noodles? In the hot summer, there's nothing better than a bowl of cold food for dinner. And around the Summer Solstice, it's time for people to harvest the wheat they grew. People use wheat to make noodles. 

Around the Summer Solstice, people also like to have other food, such as green vegetables and fruit. For example, the lychee (荔枝) is a nice fruit to have. As the old Chinese saying goes, "One lychee on the Summer Solstice keeps the bad luck away. "

Cooking was once a necessary part of education in England. However, in recent years, it (become) less important in schools. As a result, basic cooking skills are forgotten day by day. It is also making (many) children overweight, as they eat too much fast food  is bad for their health.

Can You Put Hot Food into the Fridge straight away?

You've prepared more food than you can eat—that's okay, you can have the leftovers（剩菜）tomorrow. But do you put the leftovers in the fridge （直接地）, or wait until they've cooled down?

You may have heard the （建议）not to put leftover food in the fridge while it's still hot. But do you actually have to wait? Experts say no—or, at least, not （不再）. 

In the past, before modern fridges, food was stored in iceboxes which were made of （金属）or wood, with a space at the （底部）for a large block of ice to keep the food cold. Once the ice melted（融化）, it would be replaced with another block. So if you put hot food in the icebox, the ice would melt faster and have to be replaced sooner, and this often wasn't cheap. 

But we don't have that problem anymore today. Modern fridges can （控制）temperatures a lot more effectively. 

（根据）to the USDA, hot food can—and sometimes should—be placed in the fridge. You should do it within an hour, and not leave the hot food out for longer than two hours. The New York Times suggests （分开）the food into smaller parts. This will help the food cool down quicker in the fridge. 

However, experts （警告）that you should be careful about putting hot food in the freezer（冰柜）. The heat can （增加）the temperature in the freezer, causing foods around it to thaw. And the USDA also says, the faster food freezes the better, because it helps it keep its structure better.
