The Taklimakan Desert(塔克拉玛干沙漠)is the largest desert in our country. It is in the northwest of China. It is about 337,600 square kilometers. And there are a lot of sandstorms coming from it. These sandstorms are very bad for nature and the people living nearby. So, people decided to start a big project to build a green belt around the desert.
By the end of 2023,2,761 kilometers of the green belt had been built. In 2024, another 285 kilometers were added. Now, the whole Taklimakan Desert has a green belt around it.
The building of this green belt used many different scientific ways. For example, there are tall things to stop the sand, squares made of straw, and long lines of trees. These things work together well to keep the desert from getting bigger.
When the green belt around the desert was successfully built, it brought a lot of good things. First, it made the nature around the desert better. There are fewer and weaker sandstorms now. Second, it protected the farming near the desert, so farmers can grow food more easily. Also, the living areas in cities and the countryside are better. Because there are fewer sandstorms, there is less damage(伤害)to things like roads and buildings, and more tourists come. So, local people can make more money. This project shows China's determination to stop the desert from getting worse and improve the environment. It also shows that when humans put in a lot of effort and use smart science, we can make a big difference to nature!

Most kids have pet cats or dogs, but 2-year-old Otto has an unusual friend—a crow(乌鸦)named Russell!
Millions of hearts were moved when Luna shared on her social media this truly special bond(纽带)between her son Otto and the wild bird.
Last August, the woman shared on her social media that she had brought home a baby crow. As its parents were missing, the family decided to keep the little bird and named him Russell.
Since then, the family have taken good care of Russell and Russell has also become Otto's friend. "Russell is a wild bird. He's not around all the time, but when Otto is outside, he'll never leave Otto's side," says Luna. "They have a special bond." she adds. In all of the shared videos, we can see how two-year-old Otto is patiently followed by Russell no matter where the little kid goes or what he does.
"Living with Russell also means there's never a boring moment in our life," Luna says. "He allows us to communicate with nature in a way that most people are not able to."
It's important to mention here that crows are considered very social: they have great memories and can use tools. Some scientists compare the intelligence(智力)of the crow even to a seven-year-old child's. So it's not so surprising that Russell is so happy in Otto's company and is so close to this loving family. Otto and Russell's friendship shows that where there is care and attention, there's true love and joy.

Everything in the natural world works effectively (有效地). Take a look at woodpeckers, for example, and you'll understand.
A woodpecker taps (轻叩) its head against wood (几乎) 12,000 times a day. Doing something like that all day long must hurt! Think of how you would feel if you hit your head against something (坚硬的) only once.
However, in nature, everything (发生) for a reason. Woodpeckers have long, sharp beaks which they use to make holes in trees to find tasty (昆虫) inside. Their special toes allow them to hold on tightly (紧紧地) as they bang their head against trees. They also have (强壮的) tail feathers, which they use to keep their balance while they fly.
But how do woodpeckers (避免) brain injuries? One of the most interesting things about woodpeckers is their tongue. It is very long — sometimes (两倍) as long as the bird itself. The woodpecker can wrap (包) its long tongue around its brain inside its head. (每) time the bird hits a tree with its head, its tongue (保护) its brain from injury. That's why a woodpecker can tap all day and not get a (头痛).

Ever felt stuck on a math problem, only to solve it after a walk? That's your brain taking a "break" and science says it's more important than you think.
When we focus hard, our brains use a lot of energy. After 45-60 minutes, they start to feel tired, making it harder to concentrate. Taking short breaks, called "mental rests", lets them recharge. But not all breaks are equal: scrolling through phones doesn't count. Why? Because screens keep your brain active, flooding it with new information and stopping it from relaxing.
So what works? Moving your body: a quick jog, stretching, or even just walking around the classroom. Nature helps too — studies show looking at trees or grass for 5 minutes boosts focus by 15%. Another good choice? Daydreaming. Letting your mind wander can spark (激发) creativity, like when a writer gets ideas for a story while staring out the window.
Timing matters too. Experts suggest the "5-5 rule": work for 50 minutes, then rest for 5. Next time you're stuck, try this: set a timer for 5 minutes, step outside, and listen to birds. You might be surprised how much clearer your brain feels when you get back to work—ready to tackle that problem with fresh energy.
(1)、Why does the writer mention the math problem at the beginning of the passage?A、To share a surprising study result. B、To draw readers' attention to the topic. C、To explain how to solve difficult math problems. D、To show that walking is good for physical health.(2)、How can daydreaming help?A、It makes us forget difficult tasks. B、It can increase creativity. ① to increase or improve something.
② to make someone feel happier or more confident.
③ to push someone up with your hands.
④ to make a loud noise.
A、① B、② C、③ D、④(4)、What can we infer from the "50-5 rule" in Paragraph 4?A、Students should rest for 5 minutes every hour. B、The longer the break, the better the brain works. C、Working non-stop can lead to bad study results. D、We must set a timer to solve math problems quickly. -

Cities are growing, and green spaces are shrinking. But a new idea — "vertical forests" — is changing this. These are buildings covered with thousands of plants, turning concrete towers into living ecosystems.
The first vertical forest opened in Milan, Italy, in 2014. It has two towers, with over 900 trees and 20,000 smaller plants like bushes and flowers. The plants aren't just for beauty. They absorb carbon dioxide (CO2), the gas that warms the planet, and release oxygen. They also block sunlight, keeping the buildings cool in summer and reducing the need for air conditioning.
But how do the plants survive (存活)? Special systems water them through pipes hidden in the walls. The trees are chosen for their size, so they won't grow too tall and damage the building. Roots are contained in strong pots to prevent them from breaking windows or walls.
Critics say vertical forests are expensive to build and maintain. However, supporters argue the benefits are worth it. In addition to fighting pollution, the forests attract birds and insects, bringing nature back to busy cities. "They show that humans and nature can live together in harmony," says architect Stefano Boeri, who designed the Milan towers.
(1)、What is a "vertical forest"?A、A tower made entirely of concrete. B、A large park in the middle of a city. C、A building covered with many plants. D、A forest where trees grow extremely tall.(2)、What is one benefit of vertical forests mentioned?A、They make buildings look older and more traditional. B、They reduce the need for air conditioning in summer. C、They allow plants to grow much taller than normal. D、They provide free food from fruit trees for people.(3)、What is the main idea of Paragraph 3?A、Why the roots are safe. B、How tall the trees can grow. C、Where the plants are placed. D、How plants live in vertical forests.(4)、What do supporters of vertical forests believe?A、They cost much but bring more good. B、Only large cities can benefit from them. C、They will replace all traditional buildings soon. D、Humans and nature can live together peacefully.
