In the portrait, the king was sitting on a horse, with his missing leg hidden, holding his bow(弓) and aiming(瞄准) an arrow with one eye closed. The king was very pleased with this beautiful painting and gave the painter a lot of money as he had promised.

Shang Yang was a politician of the State of Qin. He was very wise and far-sighted (有远见的).He worked out several reform(改革) plans for the state, which included focusing on farming and giving rewards(奖赏) to soldiers who fought bravely in wars.

But at the beginning, these reforms were not easily carried out. Only a few people in the state understood Shang's talent and the advantages of his plans. Most people had little trust and confidence in him.

To solve this problem, Shang came up with an idea. He ordered some soldiers to put a thin wooden pole at the south gate of Qin's capital. This attracted many people. Then, in front of the crowd, he said loudly:"People of Qin, whoever carries this pole to the north gate can get 10 gold pieces as a reward."

It was a simple task but the reward was big. Many people watched, but no one stepped forward. They all thought that Shang was joking. Seeing this, Shang stepped forward and said,"Iwill increase the reward to 50 gold pieces."

This sounded even more unbelievable. Finally, a brave man from the crowd came forward and took the pole. He put it on his shoulders and walked to the north gate. As he had promised,Shang gave the man 50 gold pieces.

Soon, everyone began to say that Shang was a man of his word. When he began promoting his reforms, the people supported him without doubt.

Thanks to these great reforms, Qin grew strong and later united all the states, becoming the first empire of China. People then created the Chinese idiom"立木取信(Building Trust with a Wooden Pole)" from this story.

During the Warring States period, the king of Zhao got a beautiful piece of jade (玉). Soon,he received a 1 from the king of Qin. In the letter, the king of Qin offered 15 towns in exchange for the jade.

I first became interested in calligraphy (书法) when my mum took me to a museum. The beautiful pieces of writing there were so shining that I (touch) by them at once. I decided to try it (I) the very same way.

So, I took part in a calligraphy class. At first, I found it quite challenging. Holding the soft brush (correct) and controlling the ink (墨水) seemed difficult., with practice and patience, I got improved.

Since I began practising my calligraphy skills, I (learn) more about Chinese characters.Over thousands of years, they have developed from drawings into standard forms. What's more, Chinese people's attitude(态度) toward life is shown in calligraphy, too. a treasure of Chinese traditional culture, calligraphy is now practised by many people.

Calligraphy is not only writing skill but also an art that can develop our mind and character.It is now one of my (hobby) that help me relax. When I write, my mind starts to become peaceful, especially when I'm stressed.

Yang Zhenning, one of the most influential physicists. passed away on October18,2025, in Beijing.

Yang was born in Hefei, Anhui Province in 1922 and grew  in a scholarly family. He showed a great interest in science when he was young. He studied at Southwest Associated University(西南联大)- famous school that developed many talents in hard times. Later, he went to the University of chicago in the US to study further.

Every year, millions of migratory birds(候鸟) fly long distances across the world, overcoming difficulties like storms and hunger to complete their journey.These birds are not only beautiful but also play a key role in nature, such as controlling insect populations, and connecting different habitats(栖息地) around the world. However, a 2024 report by the IUCN(全球自然保护联盟) shows that 30% of migratory bird species have gone down in number and 15% have endangered.
