Many Chinese universities now encourage first-year students to take part in hands-on learning programs.These programs aim to improve practical skills and help students value hard work.

Zhang Dingjuan is a young artist who practices Daoming bamboo weaving(道明竹编). Daoming,a small town in Sichuan, is for this skill. People there have passed the skill down for many years,so has become part of local culture.

As a child,Zhang often stood beside her grandfather andhim make bamboo baskets at markets .the training was much harder than Zhang had expected.She had to cut bamboo into thin piecesa heavy knife. Sometimes the sharp pieces cut her fingers. But she practiced every day and learned to shape each piece        .

After years of practice, Zhang began to make more than just baskets. She turned bamboo weaving into bags, phone cases and other.Later, MStand, a coffee shop, invited Zhang to design a gift box. Zhang chose a design that looked like the letter"M" in the shop's name.Through the gift box, more people began tothe beauty of Daoming bamboo weaving in everyday objects.

Today, Zhang keeps bringing the old skill into life. She believes traditional skills can stay alive when they meet new ideas.

Polar bears mostly eat seals(海豹). They catch them by waiting on sea ice,near holes where seals come up to breathe. But climate change brings warmer weather to cold areas and causes sea ice to melt, so polar bears have less time and food for hunting. As hunting gets harder, bears lose weight and struggle(挣扎) to survive. In places such as Hudson Bay in Canada, many polar bears there have become thinner, and mother bears have fewer babies.

 ▲ . This place has warmed faster than nearly any other place in the Arctic,and its sea ice keeps shrinking rapidly. However, scientists have discovered adult polar bears in the Barents Sea area have grown heavier and healthier over time.

Researchers studied these bears from early 1992 to 2019. During this period,the number of ice-free days increased by about 100. At first, the bears' body condition became worse. But around the year 2000, they slowly started to get more body fat, even though the ice conditions were getting worse. Scientists believe this is because these bears have been able to get used to changing conditions by spending more time on land, eating reindeer (麋鹿), bird eggs and dead animals.

But experts say that this does not mean climate change is no longer dangerous.The number of baby bears, the chance for their survival and future food may be continuously influenced as the Arctic gets warmer.

Growing super giant reeds helps a lot.Planting 13，000 hectares of them can produce 0.45 to 1.5 million tons of fuel（燃料） a year.40 million hectares of super giant reeds can be used instead of 2.2 billion （1 billion = 1，000 million） tons of coal and can cutCO₂ ， emissions（排放） by 4 billion tons in China every year.

What's more，thanks to the scientists' efforts，super giant reeds have biomass（生物量） over three times that of wild giant reed.They also have much more energy.So，the super giant reeds are good for taking the place of fossil fuels（化石燃料）.

At present，China is developing this new energy source -super giant reeds.

In Jingdezhen，China's famous "Porcelain（瓷器） Capital，" scientists are doing something amazing.They're using modern technology to understand and recreate ancient ceramics（制陶术）.How cool is that？

One of their projects is the Ancient Ceramics Gene Bank.Researchers collect broken pieces of old porcelain —yes，even "rubbish"!—and study them with high-technology tools.And then each piece is given a"digital ID".This helps them learn how the old masters made their art.A broken piece of a duck-shaped incense burner（香炉） even became a cute cartoon character called"Suisui Duck"!

But that's not all.Some people in Jingdezhen use 3 D printers to make ceramics.In the past，making a porcelain vase（花瓶） needed 72 steps and took up to 15 days.Now，with a 3 D printer，you can finish a piece in just 3 hours!This means artists can create wild shapes that were impossible before.

A young designer named Liang Liwen has an even cooler idea.His family has made ceramics for three generations（几代人）.Now he makes ceramic material!He creates very thin porcelain pieces—only 0.4 mm thick—and joins them with cloth to make beautiful dresses.His designs have appeared in London and Milan Fashion Weeks!

These stories show that old traditions and new technology can work together.Science is not just for labs—it can help us keep our culture alive in exciting new ways.

When Mr.Dow，our teacher，told us about a group project to create a brochure（小册子） for the school's 100th anniversary（周年纪念日），I was filled with excitement.But my joy didn't last long.

Let's Get Close to Nature

To take part in the school activity "Get Close to Nature", I'd like to share my ideas with you. 

Chinese diving (跳水) superstar Quan Hongchan won the gold medal for the women's 10-meter platform diving at the Tokyo Olympic Games on Thursday. The 14-year-old girl is the youngest member in Team China at Tokyo 2020. 

With the gold, China won the eighth Olympic gold medal in the women's 10 m platform, and took all the golds in four women's diving events (赛事) at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. 

Quan's parents told her not to be nervous, that it doesn't matter if she gets a medal or not and to just be herself. "Those words really helped me." Quan said, saying she planned to eat latiao, a popular Chinese food for children, to celebrate tonight. 

Quan Hongchan was born in 2007 in Zhanjiang, Guangdong. She started diving when she was only 7. She comes from a poor family. She is the second child in her family. There are four children in her family. It's so hard for them to live a good life but they always share happiness and difficulty (困难) together. "I can help my parents now! That's great!" She said happily.
