Scientists from China, the UK, and Canada studied these animals in the Southern Ocean. They focused on three kinds of these animals that eat tiny plants near the ocean's surface. These plants take in carbon dioxide (CO₂), a gas that makes the world warmer. But here is the key finding: in winter, the small animals swim down to about 500 meters below the surface. There, they breathe out the CO₂ from the plants they have eaten. This process, like a natural pump (泵), carries the gas down into the deep ocean.

So, these tiny sea animals are true "unknown heroes". The study points out howcrucial it is to protect the Southern Ocean. However, fishing activities there are putting some small sea animals in danger. We must be careful not to harm this natural pump.

Each September, as a new school year begins, students in blue vests (背心) come together at Shaoxing University. They invite new students to join a1 program. The program offers free help to children in need, especially those with disabilities. It was2 to give back to society through knowledge.

Tian Xiangmei, one of the volunteers, helps a middle school girl who has difficulty in learning3. Tian uses simple ways like drawing circles to help her work on numbers. Yin Hucheng, an 80-year-old man, lives near Changbai Mountain. His life with matsutakes (松茸)1 through a great change over the years.

When Yin was young, he had2 special talent for finding matsutakes. And he improved his3 life with this skill. At that time, matsutakes were very valuable. So even some small ones4 by the villagers before they were fully grown. As a result, the number of matsutakes dropped quickly year by year.

Yin realized that over-picking would make matsutakes disappear from Changbai Mountain one day. He was worried about it. He stopped picking matsutakes5, but he knew that was not enough. So he began to talk with the villagers and6 explained the importance of protecting matsutakes. He also advised them7 small matsutakes in the wild to grow and reproduce (繁殖). Day by day, people came to understand him and joined him in protecting matsutakes.

Grain Rain (谷雨) is the last term in spring and starts on April 19th and ends on May 4th. Grain Rain comes from the old saying, "Rain brings up the growth of (hundred) of grains," which shows that this period of rainfall is very important for crops. The Grain Rain symbolizes the end of cold weather and a rapid rise in temperature.

Here is a fact you may not know about the Grain Rain: with the increase in temperature and rainfall, the grains grow faster and (strong), so it is important (protect) the crops from insect pests.

Beyond agriculture, cultural traditions also play important role during the Grain Rain season. In southern China, people drink tea on the day of Grain Rain, while people in northern China have the habit of (eat) the vegetable toona sinensis (香椿) during Grain Rain. Both practices are said to prevent bad luck.

If you are interested in sports, it is natural that you would want to be good at them. You need the right way of thinking and other qualities. Here is some advice to help you out.

Set a proper goal for yourself. Give yourself a reasonable amount of time to achieve that goal, and break it down into smaller parts if the goal is especially big. For example, you could practise just one skill at a time.

Do proper warm-ups. A good warm-up is important for any physical activity. It can be very light, but a proper warm-up will help prevent injury. Aim to warm up for about half an hour before the game.

Develop patience in practice. No matter what you do, skills are often slow to build. If you're not patient, you will try to learn more skills long before you're ready. Keep the long-term goal in mind, and stick with it until you make it a reality.

If you focus too much on being good at something, you may forget why you want to be good in the first place. Not taking the time to enjoy the sport you play can easily make you tired. When you exercise, try to remember the other reasons why you play sports such as the natural pleasure you get from exercise.

One key project is the "Sky Drone Corridor," which uses self-flying drones to deliver medical things and food. They make delivery time 60% shorter than before. For example, a 10-km delivery that took 40 minutes in the past now only takes 15 minutes. These drones have good guiding tools, so they can get to the right places quickly.

To keep the airspace safe, Yantian developed the "Smart Sky Platform". It uses AI to watch low-altitude flights all the time, preventing dangerous situations. Since it started, the number of flight accidents has dropped by 80%.

Li Hua first appeared in the English test of the National College Entrance Exam in 1995. Since then, generations of Chinese students have once been Li Hua, writing to introduce Chinese culture, exchange school experiences, and share their dreams, mostly to an imaginary American friend.

Some of the most unforgettable moments of my time as a teacher in China happened with a teacup in hand. In my first week in Beijing, a student gave me tea  her hometown Yunnan Province. And on my final week in Shanghai, a student brought me some green  (tea) . It was sent overnight by her father so she could present it  I returned to the United States.

Sunflowers look like small suns and bring joy to others. There are different  sunflowers. Besides yellow sunflowers, there are also red and white ones. On average, sunflowers grow 6-10 feet in height, but  ever reached 30 feet! Each flower actually has 2,000 small flowers . They follow the sun across the sky. They move from  to west during the day and then move back at night.

Recently, Nima Rinji Sherpa from Nepal completed his goal by climbing the 8,027-metre Mount Shishapangma in China's Xizang Autonomous Region. The 18-year-old teenager has become the youngest climber to reach the top of the world's 14 highest mountains. The 14 mountains Nima climbed, known as the "8,000ers", are each at least 8,000 metres tall. Climbing all 14 is such a difficult and dangerous challenge that only a few people have managed to complete it.

Nima is a Sherpa. Sherpas are a group of people from Nepal known for their climbing skills. They guide climbers from other countries, carry heavy objects and set up safety equipment (安全设备). While foreign climbers often receive most of the attention for their achievements, Sherpas do much of the hard work in the same dangerous conditions. Nima hopes to bring some of that attention back to Sherpas.

Although Nima comes from a family of climbers, he didn't start climbing seriously until he was 16. He climbed his first 8,000er, Mount Manaslu, in 2022. Nima climbed Mount Qomolangma, the world's tallest mountain, earlier this year.

Nima planned to climb Mount Shishapangma last year, but an avalanche (雪崩) at the time killed four people, including his friend and teacher. He stopped his climb and focused instead on helping other climbers. "Climbing is a hard sport. It's about who can suffer the most when times are the worst," he said. This year, Nima returned to Mount Shishapangma, ready to complete his challenge. He said he was thinking of his friend as he reached the top of the mountain.

Nima says he hopes his successes will make people more aware of how important Sherpas are to climbing. Yet, he aims to be more than a guide, saying, "I want to be one of the best climbers in mountaineering."

Each spring brings a new blossom of wildflowers along the highway I travel daily to work.

There is one particular blue flower that has always caught my eye. I've noticed that it blooms (盛开) only in the morning hours because the afternoon sun is too warm for it. Every day for about two weeks, I see those beautiful flowers.

Sometime in March this year, I started a wildflower garden in our yard. I can look out of the kitchen window while doing the dishes and see the flowers. I've often thought that those lovely blue flowers from the road would look great with other wildflowers in our yard. Every day I drove past the flowers thinking, "I'm getting late. I'll stop on my way home and dig them."" Gee, I don't want to get my good clothes dirty." Whatever the reason, I never stopped to dig them. My husband even gave me a folding shovel (铲子) for that.

One day on my way home from work, I was sad to see that the pretty blue flowers were gone. I thought to myself, "Way to go, you waited too long! You should have done it right away when you saw them blooming this sprung!"

A week ago, we were shocked to learn that my oldest sister has a brain tumor (肿瘤). Before that, we had always thought that there would be plenty of time for each other. I couldn't help but see the connection between the pretty blue flowers and the relationship between my sister and us. I do believe that God has given us some time left to plant some wonderful memories that will bloom every year for us.

And yes, if I see the blue flowers again, you can bet I'll stop and take them to my wildflower garden.

Located in Africa, the Sahara Desert spreads across 30 per cent of the land. This huge desert, also known as "the Great Desert" in Arabic, is about 9 million square kilometers in size. It is also at least 4.6 million years old. This means that it is one of the oldest places in the world.

All deserts are dry, and the Sahara is both dry and hot. It is the largest hot desert in the world. We may think that all deserts are hot, but in fact some deserts are very cold! Many scientists believe that Antarctica, for example, is a type of cold desert.

Most of the Sahara is rocky ground. But there are also places with grass, lakes, mountains, and even sand seas. A sand sea is just what it sounds like—it looks like a sea of sand! When the wind blows, the sand looks like waves.

 Life in the Sahara is difficult. About two million people live in the Sahara. They usually move from place to place. There is water in a few parts of the Sahara, and some people live in these places all year round.

 Not many animals can live in a place with such a dry and hot climate. They must get used to living in the desert. Camels, for example, go for a long time without drinking water. When they do find water, they can drink more than 100 liters (公升) of it in a very short time. Fennec foxes live in the desert too. They have large ears to help their bodies stay cool.

Today, the world's largest hot desert is getting even bigger. It is now about 10 per cent larger than what it was about a century ago. But why is it growing? Some scientists believe that part of the reason is climate change. As temperatures rise, summers in Africa grow hotter and less rain falls. Water bodies get smaller and the ground gets drier and drier. If we do not take immediate action, the desert will keep growing!
