The Time-eating Monster

Have you ever noticed a monster (怪兽) around us? It's not big or scary, but it's very dangerous. This monster comes in many forms-games, social media and TV shows. You may ask, "It brings us so much fun. But why do you say it's a monster?"

For example, we may all think, "I'll just have a little fun." At first, we turn on the computer and start a game, but soon the monster comes. Then it starts to eat away our time, minute by minute. Finally, we just sit there and look at the screen without noticing it at all.

We often get lost in the monster's world like this. We become couch potatoes (电视迷) with sore necks and dry eyes. We miss sweet moments with loved ones. We are deaf to the real world.

There are more insects than any other living things in the world. Every insect is special. The more you notice them, the more they will surprise you.

From red apples to green watermelons, fruits come in many different colors, including white, red, blue, purple and black. Why do different kinds of fruits have so many colors?

The colors of fruits actually come from their different pigments (色素), which depend on the temperature. To find out how temperature influences fruit colors, Chinese scientists studied more than 280 different fruit colors. They found that red fruits usually grow in cooler places and blue fruits mostly grow in warmer places. And instead of just growing in one place, fruits grow in many places around the world. The scientists also found that the closer the fruits are to the equator (赤道), the darker their colors will be.

Animals have also had an influence on the development of fruit colors. Animals eat fruits and drop the seeds in other places later. This helps the fruits spread and grow in different places. So, in order to draw animals, some fruits develop colors that are easy for animals to see.

However, animals see colors in a different way. Fruits need to develop colors that could be seen by animals. For example, birds can see red more easily than humans can. So usually, there are more red fruits in areas where birds live.

Berlinda Black is thirteen years old, and he comes from a small village in South Australia. He has two sisters — Jennifer is eleven and Lisa is seven. They are all studying at the School of the Air.

My "perfect holiday"

Many people are trying to learn a new language. Some consider it a hobby. Others have to learn a language because of their jobs or studies. As a foreigner who is really interested in Chinese culture, I like learning Chinese.

It is thought that a person needs to know at least 3,000 Chinese characters(汉字) to understand most Chinese newspapers. The problem for most foreigners, however, is that knowing 3,000characters sounds like an impossible task, because many of the Chinese characters look the same.That's why some people give up halfway. It's the most arduous part for me, too. But I managed to learn how to write each character by watching videos online. Whenever I saw a character 1 didn't know in the street or on a menu, I would just write it down on my phone and then look it up. Slowly,I' ve learned the common characters in daily life.

It's also important to listen to Chinese as much as possible. I downloaded (下载) a lot of.listening materials onto my phone and listened to them on the way to school and work. I also watched a lot of Chinese TV shows and films, where the words are not so difficult, and there are.always subtitles (字幕). It's really helpful for my listening.

As for speaking, I practice talking about different topics in Chinese when I am walking around,talking to myself or in my head, thinking through different conversations and situations. For example, whenever I was going to a shop, I would think about how to say that in Chinese. It helps me to think in a Chinese way, which is really important.

Learning a language is never easy. As for me, I just use every tool on hand and take my Icaming step by step, and I'm still learning new things to this day!
