Online and Face-to-Face Learning

Today, many schools offer online classes. Students can listen to lessons, finish homework and talk with teachers through the Internet. Some people think this new way of learning will take the place of traditional classrooms. .

One clear advantage of online learning is convenience. Students do not always need to go to school at a fixed time. They can study early in the morning, late at night or at weekends. It is helpful for students who have family duties or other activities after school. .

Online learning can also make some students more willing to take part in class activities.  But in an online class, they can write down their ideas before sharing them. This may help them feel safer and more confident.

 Students can talk with teachers and classmates directly. They can ask questions, see others' expressions and learn how to work with people. These skills are important not only in school but also in future life. Some subjects are also harder to learn online. For example, science classes often need experiments. Drama classes need students to act with others. These classes need real practice and direct help, so online lessons may not give students the same experiences.

Online and face-to-face learning are not enemies. Each has its good points and problems.  The best choice depends on what students need to learn and how they learn best.

Scientists say they have found signs with the help of AI tools that elephants call each other by "names". "They have this ability to call certain members of their family with a special call," said Mickey Pardo, the professor of the study.

Elephants' loud calls might be their best-known sounds, but lower-pitched rumbles (低鸣声) are more meaningful, as they are used in many social situations. Elephant rumbles can be hard for human ears to tell apart, so the researchers used AI to study different elephant calls. To understand these rumbles, the researchers studied calls made by family groups of elephants in Kenya. Some elephants seemed to answer certain rumbles from other elephants, and the researchers put those sounds into their AI tool. "If the calls have something like a name, you should be able to find out who the call is for," Dr. Pardo said. The scientists found that their AI tool could tell which elephant a rumble was for.

The researchers also did fieldwork (野外考察) and played recordings of rumbles to elephants while filming how they moved. They found that elephants paid more attention when a call was for them than when it was for another elephant, lifting their ears and making their own low sounds in reply. These results clearly showed that elephants could tell whether a call was for them.

Other animals have also been found to call one another by what scientists have called "names." But those "names" are often copies of sounds that other animals make. African elephants, however, may be the first nonhuman animals shown to call one another by names using sounds that are not copied, more like the way humans use names.

Researchers say this finding is important because it shows how strong elephant social relationships are. "Social connection is very important to everything about elephants," one researcher said. Understanding elephant communication could also help people better protect these animals.

Have you ever tried to change someone's mind during an online argument? You might think that if you provide enough facts and evidence (证据), the other person will finally agree with you. However, science shows that the opposite often happens. When people's ideas are questioned, they may become even more sure that they are right. This makes it difficult to discuss online.

Scientists have found that our brains treat our ideas as something important to protect. When someone challenges ideas we care about, such as our favorite football team or our ideas about healthy food, our brains feel a sense of danger. This means that when you tell someone they are wrong, their brain may enter a "defense mode" at once.

Human beings are social animals who always want to belong to a group. Our opinions often show which group we belong to, and if we say we are wrong, we may feel that we are going against our friends. Most people would rather be "wrong but together" with their team than be "right but alone".

Our brains also accept only the information we like. When we read news online, we usually look for stories that prove we are right and pay no attention to stories that show we may be wrong. Even if someone gives us clear facts, we may still find reasons to call them "not true" or "silly". This thinking habit makes it hard for us to see the whole truth, because we only see what we want to see.

So, how can we talk about different ideas without starting a "war" on the Internet? Experts suggest that we should try to build a "safe space" by showing respect first. If you want someone to listen to your ideas, you must make them feel that you are not their enemy. When people feel safe and respected, their brains will stop being in "defense mode," and only then can they truly start to think about different points of view.

Maybe there are many moving stories around you. Today you can know one of them. This story is just so sweet and sad at the same time. 11-year-old Lu Zikuan had to eat five times a day because he wanted to save his father's life.

His father got badly ill years ago. Doctors told him that the only way to save his father's life was with a bone marrow transplant (骨髓移植). Lu was the only person in the family to save his dad.

But there was one big problem— he had only 30 kg. And doctors told the family that the boy had to gain weight to at least 15 kg.
