Here are some table manners in America. You should know them when you are at table there. 

·Don't circle your plate with your arms. If you do so, you will become the focus of the table. Others would wonder, "Is there anything wrong with the food?" 

·Don't push the plate back when you finish your food.  Do you want to let the hostess know that you've just done labor（劳动）?

·Don't lean（倚靠）back in your chair and say "I'm full. " Just put the knife and fork across the plate. That's all. 

·Don't cut up everything before you start to eat. 

·Never take a huge mouthful（一满口）of anything.  Don't do that. It's not so good. 

 If the thing you want is not at hand, you can simply ask the nearest person for help like "Mrs Smith, could you pass me the dish?"

Last year, I went to an international school in Russia. When the New Year was coming, my Russian friend, Andrey, 1 me to celebrate it in his home. His village was in the western part of Russia. After lunch we headed west by plane.

Around the world, people have different ideas about what good manners are. When you go to restaurants in different parts of the world, it's important 1   the right things to do. For example, in China it's OK to make a lot of noise in a restaurant. In fact, if a restaurant isn't noisy, you may think there2  something wrong with it. However, in many Western countries, restaurants are quiet    3 . If a table is too loud, other people might even complain（抱怨）to the owner（主人）of the restaurant.

I have read a book named The Old Man and the Sea. The book was written by a world-famous writer Ernest Miller Hemingway. It has made a big difference to my life. Now I always look on the bright side of life whatever difficulties I meet.

The book is about an old fisherman's hard life. He spent many days on the sea trying to catch a fish, but his hard work turned out to be useless. Day after day, he came back home with nothing in his hands. But he always wore a smile on his face. Finally, on the 85th day, a huge fish turned up and a fight began. The old man finally won the fight against it. However, on his way home, several sharks hit the man's boat and ate the fish. Few people could accept such a bad situation, but the old man never gave up. The old man thought he could still go back home safely. After all, life could be full of ups and downs at times.

I really like the old man. He never gave up. He loved everything in his life, good or bad. Some people think the old man is a loser because he got nothing in the end. However, he is a winner in my heart. There are so many things that we can learn from him.

In the past, people had a much  time studying than we do now. However, these poor conditions did not stop young people from learning knowledge. During the Jin Dynasty, there  two hard-working children and they left inspiring（励志的）stories because of their love for reading.

The  child was Che Yin. He was smart and loved to read. He  up in a poor family and wasn't able to buy lamp oil to study at night. One night, he saw fireflies（萤火虫）outside his house and came up with an idea. He caught some fireflies. He put  into a cloth bag and  the bag up as a lamp. He spent all of his summer nights reading like this.

The second child was Sun Kang. At that time, a lot of people loved reading very much. One night during winter, Sun used up all of his lamp oil and couldn't study at night. When he woke up at midnight, he noticed the thick snow reflecting（反射）the moonlight . , he thought, "Oh, I can use the reflected light to !" He took out his  and read them, even if it was very cold.

Both of the kids later became successful and famous. Their hard-working spirit moved millions of people.

Li Bai (701—762) was a Tang Dynasty poet（诗人）. People call him the "poet-immortal（诗仙）". His works are cool and nice. He wrote more than 1,000 poems in his life.

The poem Thoughts on a Tranquil Night by Li Bai is like a short, beautiful story. It's about missing home very much when you're far from home. The poet used only 20 characters. Every character of the poem is simple but we can feel his strong feelings when reading the poem. In the poem, the poet sees a pool of light from the moon before his bed. He wants to know if the cold feeling results from the hoarfrost on the ground. When he looks up at the bright moon, he feels a little warm because the moon makes him think of his homeland. But at last, when he puts his head down, he wants to be at home. This makes him feel very homesick.

These days, a video about the play Thunderstorm （《雷雨》）is very popular online. Some high school students performed it in their Chinese class. Shi Yaoyufan, the main actor, played the role of Zhou Puyuan and caught people's eye with his excellent acting. Many people watched the video and got to know more about Thunderstorm.

Thunderstorm is Cao Yu's first play. It is also one of his most famous plays. It came out in 1934 when Cao was 24. The play tells the story of two families around the year 1925. Now, people can still watch it at a lot of theatres in Beijing, Xi'an and other cities.

In fact, Cao Yu is a pen name. The writer's real name is Wan Jiabao. He was born in Tianjin. When he was in middle school, he became a member of an acting club. He also started writing at that time. Later, he went to university and kept writing. During his life, he wrote many plays. They are all classics.

Wan Fang, one of the daughters of Cao Yu, said, "I've learned a lot from Thunderstorm. The first time I heard the sound of the thunderstorm in the play, I was so afraid that I started to cry. But later, I watched it again and again and got to know it. It is a must-see."

If your children are learning to read, it's wonderful! No matter what they're reading, they're probably super-excited readers! But the fact is that reading is a skill. 

◆ Create a comfortable reading space.

Choose a special place with right furnishings （室内陈设）, blankets and pillows for your children and put a bookcase of your children's books there.  If your children feel like they have got their own special place for reading, they will probably spend time in their little space with all their favourite books.

If you want your children to learn to love reading, spend a few minutes every day reading with them, no matter how busy you are.  Plan to go to bed a few minutes earlier each night, so your children have the time to choose a book to read. Besides, reading aloud（大声）to your children can make them more willing（乐意的）to read on their own.

◆ Make the library and the bookstore a special treat.

Whether your kids are big readers or not, they are only children. They may be excited about new clothes and toys, but not books! Try using the excitement to help your children love to read. Making a special treat of spending some time at the library or the bookstore can be the perfect way to get your children excited about reading.
