When you have a cold, it can be hard to go to school and try to listen carefully in class. Maybe you have a cough that keeps you up overnight. It would be easier to stay at home, but some people think it better to get back to class as soon as you feel up to it. Should you go to school if you' re sick?

Yes— it' s not necessary to stay at home.    Children get about five to eight colds per year, which would mean missing a lot of class time if they didn't go to school. Falling behind is stressful, and losing social time with classmates can make kids sad.  And getting germs(细菌)sometimes helps us get stronger against sickness. That's necessary for a healthy immune(免疫)system. 

No— it's not fair to others.   It's common sense(常识):  Even if you' re starting to improve, you might get sick again if you push yourself too much. If you' re coughing in class, you' re disturbing(打扰) teachers and other students and spreading your germs. And if they get sick, they' ll have to miss school, too.

Every year, climate change is making the planet hotter. When humans cut down trees or burn coal, oil, and gas to produce electricity, CO₂ and other harmful greenhouse gases(温室气体) go into the atmosphere(大气层). These gases take in the sun's heat, causing the earth to warm up. The heat causes terrible weather around the world, including heatwaves, floods and huge storms. 

One way of keeping the planet cool is to stop the greenhouse gases from entering the atmosphere. 

Some animals are natural-born climate change fighters. All animals are important, but a few hero animals protect their homes and keep them healthy, while going about their daily lives. Just by being themselves, these clever animals can prevent the planet from getting too hot. Let's meet them. 

Tapirs(貘), rainforest regenerators

Imagine if you pulled a pig's nose to make it longer but stopped before it got as long as an elephant's trunk. That's what a tapir looks like. These strange animals can grow as big as, or even bigger than, an adult lion. Tapirs have a secret superpower, too— their poo(大便). Tapirs' poo spreads seeds(种子) across the forest, helping lots of new plants grow so that the forests can spring back to life more quickly. 

Sea otters(海獭), protectors of the kelp(海藻) forest

Kelp grows in huge underwater forests. Like forests on land, k elp provides a wonderful, safe home for lots of animals, including sea otters. It also takes in and stores lots of carbon(碳). The sea urchins(海胆) love to tease kelp, and sea otters love to eat the urchins. When an otter uses its stomach like a dinner table to snack on urchins, it's not only supercute, it's actually helping to protect the k elp and create healthy, lively underwater forests. 

Although experts cannot agree on everything, studies show that the ancestors of the modern guitar first appeared in history several thousand years ago. The oldest guitar-like instrument that has been found and saved belonged to an officer in Egypt. This instrument had three strings(弦) and was made of beautifully polished wood. A century later, Hittite craftsmen(工匠) made stone model showing a man playing an instrument like a guitar. 

As people began to move to new areas and spread their culture, guitar instruments moved, too. Each new people group changed the design to best fit their own musical sounds. The number of strings changed, and the material used to make the instrument changed, too. People of ancient Africa, the Middle East, and Greece all played stringed instruments. The North African Moors played the oud and brought it to Spain around AD 700. There, it probably mixed with the Greek kithara and the Middle Eastern tanbur. Out of this mix came the Spanish guitarra. 

Names for the different stringed instruments all finally centered around the Persian word"tar", which means"string". However, the modern guitar really began to take shape around the 19th century. Torres, a Spanish guitar maker, improved it so much that his design had remained almost unchanged until today. 

European immigrants(移民) brought Torres's design to America, where it became popular. In fact, the guitar plays an important part in what many people consider true American music: blues, jazz, and rock and roll. The 20th century brought electric guitars and new ways of using the guitar in music. Today, the instrument remains one of the most popular in the world. 

David was a little boy with messy brown hair and old clothes. I had often wondered what kind of home life David had and what kind of mother could send her son to school dressed so improperly for the cold winter months, without a coat, boots, or gloves. But something made David special. He was always happy to help and not a day passed that David didn't stay after school to straighten chairs and clean the desks. We never talked much, he would just simply smile and ask what else he could do, then thank me for letting him stay and slowly head for home. 

Weeks passed and the excitement over the coming Christmas grew stronger and stronger until the last day of school before the holiday break. When the final bell rang, the anxious(急切的) children rushed out of the door. I smiled in relief as the last of them hurried out the door. Turning around, I saw David quietly standing by my desk.

In China you must never give a clock to a Chinese person, because the sound of the word for "clock" is similar to the sound for "death" in Chinese. Also, don't wrap（包裹）a present in white, black or blue paper, because these are the colors for funerals（葬礼）. Don't give a knife, because something sharp（锋利的）can cut a friendship. 

In Russia, if we give flowers as a present, we have to give odd numbers of them (one, three, five, etc. ), because even numbers of flowers (two, four, six, etc. ) are for funerals. 

In Germany, ____ are a good present to take to your dinner hostess, but don't take her red roses or the white lily.  Red roses mean you are in love with her and the white lily is a symbol of death. Don't take thirteen of anything because it's an unlucky number. Don't take an even number of anything, either. Don't wrap your present in white, brown or black paper. 

As an old saying goes, "When in Rome, do as the Romans do. " I learned the of this when I studied in Russia. 

One day I  some of my Chinese friends to a famous local restaurant in Moscow. My guests and I were 

 about visiting Red Square and happy about our meeting. We had a warm chat until the waiter told me that we were being too loud. We turned our voices . But this didn't last long. The waiter came over to us two more  with the same message（信息）. 

How bad an we left on the local people! In China, it's  and important for a host to make a lively atmosphere（气氛）. However, in Russia and Western countries, having a meal in a public place means you must keep quiet. You need to be polite to others. 

I felt bad about this. Even though we tried  best, it was very difficult to develop a new habit. Finding the  between cultures is much fun. I'd like to  my eyes and mind open.

These thoughts were highly unhelpful. So over the next few months, I started to make some real changes. I made new friends, learned to get used to the differences and so on. Things started to make sense and I understood Chinese culture better and better! Every day I felt more and more comfortable with my new home. I developed many new traits（特点）while also keeping earlier ones from my home country. My happiest moment was when my dear friend one day said to me, "You are Chinese now, Jack! You sound just like us!"

Culture shock is not so difficult, and here are some tips that did help me: Try to really put yourself out there and make friends! Talk, even when you make mistakes! Try to learn about the new culture. That doesn't mean you have to give up who you are and what you believe in（相信）!

①As more and more people travel around the world, it is necessary for them to know what to do in different countries and how to deal with cultural differences. Here are different cultures from three countries. 

②Canadians are easy to get along with and they usually say hello to each other even if they are strangers. When men and women meet, women usually hold out their hands first. If a woman doesn't want to shake hands, she can just nod and smile. If a man wears gloves, he should take them off before shaking hands. 

③Brazilians are very friendly and they always get ready to say hello to others. They stand very close to each other when speaking and may touch each other's arms or backs. And if you go to a business meeting in Brazil, you are not expected to take a present. 

④When you meet Indians, it is important to say hello to the oldest person first. But you'd better not hold out your left hand when you say hello, because it is impolite. Also, many Indians are enthusiastic and they like to say hello actively and have a conversation with you when you travel in India. 

⑤Customs in different countries are like different flowers, forming a beautiful garden together. Learning to respect others' ways is like giving a friendly smile. It can bring people's hearts closer.
