Since the beginning of time, people have had illnesses and doctors have tried to treat them. In the days when people knew very little about medicine, some very strange and terrible treatments were tried. Here are some of the worst.

1 Toothache

Ancient Egyptians who had toothache didn't use to go to the dentist (牙医) because there weren't any dentists in those days. So they used to find a dead mouse and put it in their mouth. They left it there for a few hours. Did it take the toothache away? Who knows? But aren't you happy that there's a dentist near you?

2 Backache

Backache is no fun at all—people who suffer from it have a lot of pain. Sometimes it's because a bone in the back is out of position—that is, not in the place where it should be. In ancient Greece, doctors used to treat backache like this: they tied the patient to a ladder, pulled the ladder up high and then let it fall to the ground. Bang! The vertebra (脊椎) went back into place. Well, that was the idea, but this "treatment" probably just made the backache worse!

3 Baldness

OK, it's not really a disease at all. But men whose hair is falling out are never happy about it, are they? The ancient Egyptians had a way. What did they use to do? They took the fat of a lion, a hippopotamus (河马), a cat and a snake, mixed them together—and then rubbed the mixture into the man's head. Maybe it stopped baldness, maybe not—but the man's head certainly didn't smell too good after that!

4 Scrofula

The Middle Ages was a time when there was a common skin (皮肤) disease called scrofula. (We won't go into the details, OK?) People who had scrofula could easily stop it—they just had to get the king or queen to touch them! (The question is: why would a king or queen want to touch a person who had a skin disease?)

Five years ago, Jiang Songning lost his right forearm in an accident. The boy, only 17 then, thought the music of his life had stopped.

But this year, Jiang could sit again before black and white keys. A thin, silver "hand"covered his right arm. It was a bionic(仿生的)hand. When Jiang's mind said "move," the fingers moved. The song was clear and sweet, and the listeners clapped with joy. Jiang said the bionic hand is almost as flexible as his left hand, with each finger able to move freely.

Traditional prosthetics(假肢)can only do certain moves, but this bionic hand can do 80 percent of what a real hand can do. And it costs only one-fifth of similar foreign products. The disabled people can try it and improve their life.

There are many such stories. A man from Henan couldn't walked for years. This year, he tried an exoskeleton(外骨骼).After thirty minutes of practice, he was able to walk slowly. "When I want to go forward, it gives me power. I feel I am walking by myself," he said excitedly.

This exoskeleton not only helps people with disabilities, but is also fit for situations such as long-distance walking and mountain climbing. It is now widely used in fields including emergency rescue, forest firefighting and so on. It can greatly help people carry more, walk longer and feel less tired.

Besides the bionic hand and the exoskeleton, there are more and more AI products showing how technology can warm our daily life, especially the life of the disabled.

About 200 American high school students were in Shenzhen for cultural exchanges with Chinese teens. It's part of the "2025 China-U.S. Youth Marching Band People-to-People Exchange China Tour". It aimed at building bridges of understanding through music and increasing connections between the two peoples.

The tour, themed "Marching Together to a Wonderful Future, " included stops in Beijing and Shenzhen from Oct. 9 to 18. It's part of a plan to invite 50, 000 young Americans to China over five years. The U.S. students came from three schools and had a busy schedule in Shenzhen. They visited a robot company, and went to local schools, a science museum and an old town.

For many of the American teens, this is their first visit to China, and the experience has been extremely positive. "It's really exciting. It's so nice exploring different cultures." said Celina Castro, a student from Clarksburg High School. "I'm really fascinated about everyone in China. Everyone is so nice."

Her schoolmate, Bennett Goldberg, was particularly impressed after dancing with robots. "It's really exciting, and not many people can say they dance with robots, " he said. "It makes you really hopeful about the future... I think it's been a really unique experience."

Goldberg also expressed his admiration for the city. "I really like the buildings The food here is amazing."

Looking ahead to the rest of the trip, which includes the performances with-Shenzhen teenagers, Goldberg said, "I really look forward to the cultural exchanges. And I really like all the friends I've met while I've been here."

The 15th National Games have received wide attention from millions of sports fans. Its opening ceremony (开幕式) has also become a hot topic  the Internet. While people waited for the ceremony to start, they were surprised  (see) so many kinds of Chinese Intangible Cultural Heritage (非物质文化遗产).

One of  (attractive) shows was the flying Aoyu, a huge dragon-headed fish that flew slowly above the bright lights. In ancient Chinese  (story), the Aoyu means "number one in the exam." Soon after, a long white-cloth dragon moved like a silver river across the field. Candles inside its body made it shine  (bright) in the dark, and the crowd called it "the ballet of dragons". Between these moments, Kung Fu players performed  (power) and fast kicks. Cantonese Opera artists amazed the audience with  (they) wonderful singing voices. And lion dances were full of exciting moments. The wonderful mix of traditional art and modern lights showed young viewers  cultural confidence means. Even the Chaoshan Culture played  important part. The exciting Yingge Dance and Double Goose Dance also caught the eyes of everyone present.

A little boy worked hard every day. His family were poor farmers, and their life was often tiring. But at sunset, he would go up a hill and look at a house far away. This house had windows that shone like gold, and it filled his heart with dreams.

"Yes!" said the boy. "I have found that our house has windows of gold."

"If nothing is done, the amount of plastic entering the ocean is going to double by 2060," Boyan Slat said at TED in 2025.

About 14 years ago, when the young Boyan Slat went diving in the sea, he saw more plastic than fish. This experience pushed him to found the Ocean Cleanup later. Its goal is to clear away 90% of floating plastic from the oceans by 2040. To achieve this, the team has made great efforts.

First, the team built a huge U-shapedbarrier, thinking that wind and waves could push it to collect plastic by itself. But it didn't work well. The team soon added ships to pull the net, and this finally made plastic collection successful.

And then, they started to stop more plastic from entering the ocean. Using AI cameras, they found that only 1% of rivers cause 80% of the pollution. To stop this, they placed solar "Interceptors" (拦截器) in these rivers to catch the plastic.

Now they have kept 1/3 of the plastic waste out of the ocean. The system clears an area the size of a football field every 5 seconds. Each machine collects 1.4 million kilograms of plastic in less than 2 hours. And the plastic is recycled into new products like sunglasses.

"Once the oceans are clean again, it can be an example of how we can solve the big problems of our time, through hard work and creativity," Slat said in the end.

Chen-Ning Yang, a world-famous physicist in China, passed away on October 18, 2025, at the age of 103. People from home and abroad remembered him with great respect.

Together with Tsung-dao Lee, Yang was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1957 for their theory of parity non-conservation in weak interactions (弱相互作用中宇称不守恒理论). He was often listed with Albert Einstein as one of the 20th century's greatest physicists.

Born in Hefei, Anhui Province, in 1922, Yang received his early education in China. He got his master's degree from Tsinghua University during the war. Later, he left China and went to the United States for further studies.

Although Yang spent many years abroad, he had always cared about China's scientific development. In 1971, he made his first visit to China, which helped to start many academic(学术的) exchanges between China and other countries. This trip also led to a wave of visits to China by overseas Chinese scientists. Furthermore, he personally raised funds to support nearly 100 Chinese students for overseas study, and many of them later became leading experts in their fields. In 1986, he worked as a visiting professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. In his later years, he returned to Tsinghua University and continued to work hard for the development of higher education in China.

Though Yang has left us, his spirit continues to encourage young people to explore the unknown world and serve their own country. His life shows how one person can make a difference with both intelligence and deep love for his homeland.

Amrita used to be a city girl who enjoyed busy streets. But after years in a tiring job, she felt she needed a 1 . So she left the city and moved back to her hometown. The quiet village felt peaceful but also a little 2 .

Be a good listener.  Not everyone wants you to solve their problems; many people just need someone to listen as they share their feelings. When someone talks to you about what they are facing, listen carefully and try to understand them.

Send a thoughtful note. A few kind words can make people feel loved and valued.  Even a few sweet words can brighten their day.

Helping others helps you build strong relationships and brings more meaning to your life.
