The Silk Road was a group of trade paths connecting Europe and Asia. It started over 2,000 years ago during China's Han Dynasty and lasted until the 15th century. People traded goods, ideas, and cultures there. A German geographer named Ferdinand von Richthofen called it the "Silk Road" in 1877 because Chinese silk was its most famous product.

The Silk Road was about 6,400 kilometers long, across tough places like deserts and mountains. Traveling was dangerous because of the bad roads, robbers, and no government protection. Traders formed camel groups called caravans (大篷车) for safety. Most traders didn't travel the whole way. Goods moved through many people's hands along the way.

In the 15th century, sea travel replaced the Silk Road. Today, UNESCO (联合国教科文组织) protects parts of it as special historical places. China's "Belt and Road Initiative" today still uses the old Silk Road's ideas about connecting countries. The Silk Road teaches us that sharing and curiosity (求知欲) can unite the world. This lesson remains important for people today.

Why do people get more colds and flu when it's cold outside? In a new study, scientists have found the answer. That is, the cold air breaks the immune response (免疫反应) in our noses.

The nose is an important part of our body's immune system. When a virus goes into the nose, the cells (细胞) in the nose will create billions of simple copies of themselves called extracellular vesicles (EVs).

"EVs can't divide like cells, but they are like little cells that can kill the viruses," said Benjamin Bleier, the researcher of the study from Harvard Medical School. "They are like little arms that catch the viruses when you breathe them in." Then, the viruses on EVs will be expelled from our body as snot (鼻涕).

However, when cold weather hits, the nose's "superpower" becomes less powerful. The study found that when the temperature in the nose drops by 5℃, nearly 50% of the billions of EVs will be useless. Cold air makes people catch viruses more easily because "you've lost half of your immunity (免疫力)", said Bleier.

This is why we should wear masks in winter. "Wearing masks can not only protect us from viruses, but it's also like wearing a sweater on our nose," Bleier said. The warmer you keep your nose, the better it works to fight against viruses.
