Australia's ecosystems are in danger because of the invasion (入侵) of the red fire ant, which is considered one of the most harmful invasive species in the world.
The small ant is from South America, but has spread to many countries in the world, causing huge harm to agriculture and ecosystems (农业与生态系统). The Minister for Agriculture calls these ants"super pests" because they do great harm to society, economy, and the environment.
Red fire ants were first found in Australia in 2001. They have been largely controlled in the state of Queensland since then. However, Australia's Invasive Species Council (ISC) says the ants are spreading across the country because of the flood water. They are holding onto each other to form"rafts (木筏)" on the water. An ISC statement said,"Red fire ants are more active before or after rainfall and can form large floating rafts, which move with the flow of the water to find places to stand in new areas." The National Trust is setting up a new laboratory to store and study thousands of paint samples(样本) taken from its houses, paintings and objects. The charity, which protects nature and historic buildings for the public, wants to find out what hidden layers(表层) of paint can unlock about our past,
The National Trust has thousands of samples of paints collected over many years from buildings, objects and paintings that it looks after. Some of the oldest samples come from Roman houses which date back over 1,800years. Up to now, these samples have been stored all over the country. Having them all in one place at the lab will help experts(专家) do their research.
The lab will be at the Trust's Royal Oak Foundation Conservation Centre in Kent, England, and researchers will study paints closely to know about the materials that artists used. For example, a sample taken from a picture by the Italian artist Tintoretto, which is nearly 500 years old, showed that he used layers of ground-up gold to create a rich surface.
This research can also show what something looked like when it was new. One study, on the National Trust'sBath Assembly Rooms, England, found that the rooms had been painted over many times throughout their 250-year history. When experts studied the sample they could look at the layers of paint over all that time and see that the first colour used was either a salmon pink or greenish blue. This helped the experts work out how to restore each room to the way it looked before. Rebecca Hellen, senior expert at the National Trust, told The Week Junior that the goal is"being authentic(逼真的) for our visitors".
