Every Small Action Counts

A clean and beautiful school makes us happy and healthy. 

My father is a quiet man. He has his thoughts, but he usually keeps them to himself. There is one thing that really gets him excited. Just say the word "rubbish" to him! Or I should say, he is keen on solving the rubbish problem! 

"We have become a ‘throw-away' society," he says. "We buy and buy, and then we throw it away. We can't keep doing this. Rubbish is everybody's problem." My father doesn't just talk about it though. When he sees a problem, he tries to find a solution. 

Last year, my father decided to do something about all the wasted food we were throwing away. One family makes nearly 500 pounds of food waste each year. We throw away the potato skins and the apple cores (核) when we finish with them. Imagine how they collect in the large area! 

However, there is something that we can do to reuse rubbish. For example, if we carefully deal with food waste, it can be changed from rubbish to rich, dark earth known as compost (肥料). This compost can be added to vegetable gardens to make the plants grow really well. 

"I bought a compost bin today," Dad said one night. "From now on, instead of throwing away all our food waste, we will put it in the compost bin. Mother Nature will slowly turn it from rubbish into earth." 

It took a while to get used to it, but soon, we were taking our food waste to the compost bin. In three months, we found it full of rich compost material! 

On the first day of our school's Community Service Week, I learned how small actions can make a big d to our world. Our teacher taught us some b skills like collecting waste and planting trees. "Even simple efforts can spread hope," she said. 

My classmates and I worked c to clean up the local park. At first, I didn't think it was helpful, but seeing bags of rubbish collected gave me a c to rethink. When more neighbors joined to s us, I realized the activity was really m . 

A friend of mine, Tom, used old bottles w to build bird feeders. His clever idea let the birds in the park eat freely. The park l brighter, and our hearts felt lighter. 

This event taught me that caring for the environment starts w small steps. Whether it's recycling or saving energy, every action matters. If all of us can do something good for the environment, we are sure to build a much g world. Let's take action!

How are things going? In your last letter you talked about low-carbon life. 

As the environmental problem comes to the public's attention, it is important that we take action to protect our planet.  A low-carbon lifestyle provides us with the good chance to do it. 

 I have made some changes in my way of life. From then on, I haven't asked my parents to drive me to school. Just like my schoolmates, I now refuse to use disposable (一次性的) chopsticks and lunch boxes. The TV and the computer are important for my family, but we sometimes read books instead. I believe that these changes may help reduce the use of electricity.

Sarah sits in her yard with her handmade crafts(手工制品) on the table. There are baskets, flower pots, and cloth bags—all made from recycled materials. They are not just creative(有创造力的) objects. They're part of Sarah's project to make a greener community. 

Two years ago, Sarah found plastic bottles and empty cans everywhere in a park. Sarah felt sad. One day, Sarah noticed some kids selling orange juice at the park. That was when Sarah got an idea. "Mom, what if we sell handmade crafts?" she asked. "Then we can buy trees for our neighborhood with the money." 

With her mom's help, Sarah started making crafts with great interest, using plastic bottles and empty cans. Every day after school, she sat in her yard, waiting for customers. At first, no one came. Sarah felt down, but she didn't give up. 

Later, people began to stop by. A kind woman bought a cloth bag, saying it was perfect for shopping. By the end of the first month, Sarah had made $150. She bought 30 small trees. Together with her parents, they planted the trees around the park.

Now, the neighborhood looks nicer, and the birds have more places to rest. Sarah even teaches her friends how to make eco-friendly crafts after school. They organize sales every month to raise money for new projects like bird feeders. 

Sarah shared her story at a community event. "Making a greener community is important," she said proudly. "If everyone helps a little, we can make our life better." 

John is 16 years old. He and his father, Brian, 1 cycling in their free time. John said, "Cycling is a 2 thing in our family. I started going cycling with my father on weekends 3 I was very young."
