Summer vacation can be whatever you make of it, so make each day memorable by pursuing your interests. Here are some useful suggestions for you to enjoy summer vacation.
Staying Organized
Make your summer goals, noting which are the most important for you to get done. If you are going on vacation, celebrating a friend's birthday, or doing anything else important during the summer, mark it on a calendar so that you can be prepared for each event.
Getting Active
Go running and make sure that you avoid the hottest part of the day. Try running either before the sun comes up or after the sun goes down to stay comfortable. Take a hike, but remember to go with another person, and bring a phone or map in case you get lost. You should also bring along a bottle of water.
Making Time for Friends
Find a recipe in a cookbook or online, and cook something with friends. It always results in a great memory. Exploring is necessary, too. If you are traveling to another country or city, go to many different places. If you are staying in your city or town, try to approach your own neighborhood as if you were a tourist.
Relaxing Alone
Catch up on your reading during the summer. You can check out free books from your local library, and renew them if you need more time to read. Also, you can learn a new skill by taking courses online or taking a weekly class, such as learning a new language, taking a dance class, or mastering a musical instrument.

Wang Xue is a 22-year-old student from a university in Beijing. Now she works as a volunteer Chinese teacher at a high school in Yunnan Province.
At first, Wang was worried about her teaching methods because her students didn't do well in class. However, Wang didn't give up when she faced the challenges. She tried new ways like encouraging students through praise and making them work in groups. Eight months later, their hard work paid off and they made great progress.
In addition to daily teaching, Wang often organized after-school activities to support the students' all-around development. One of her proudest projects was guiding her students to create collage poems—a creative mix of Yunnan's literature and art. Through the project, the students discovered the beauty of the subject, and started seeing the world differently.
Wang also helped students with difficulties in their life. A student surnamed Zhou recently fell ill. Wang visited her at the hospital and learned about her family's struggles—her father passed away and her mother now supports two daughters alone by running a small shop. Since then she has quietly offered companionship (陪伴) and encouragement whenever possible.
"And here, I found that the warmth goes both ways. The more I gave, the more I got. That's the real power of volunteer teaching," Wang said. After her one-year volunteer work, Wang will soon begin graduate studies in international Chinese language education. She hopes to teach Chinese and spread Chinese culture overseas after graduation.

Because of modern medicine, millions of people now live longer, healthier lives, and we are developing new ways to fight diseases (疾病) all the time.
In the past, most people worked on their feet and moved their bodies all day, so they had lots of exercise. Today, many people sit in front of a computer all day at work, and often eat a lot of sweet foods, or foods that are made in factories. This can be a big danger to their health.
The disease that causes most deaths in the world today—three in every ten—is heart disease. But many of these deaths need not happen, and are caused because people have not exercised or eaten well enough. Not exercising, or eating unhealthy food, can sometimes cause another dangerous disease-diabetes (糖尿病). In the last twenty years, there has been a big rise in the number of deaths from diabetes.
Smoking is another very big health problem and it causes more than seven million deaths a year. There are lots of very dangerous chemicals in cigarettes (香烟), so smokers can get many diseases. Around the world, fewer people smoke today than twenty years ago, but there were still more than 1.2 billion smokers in 2025. Nearly half of all the children in the world are taking cigarette smoke into their bodies every day because they have to spend time near people who smoke.
When people sit for too long in front of a computer they can get problems with their eyes, arms, necks, and backs. And when they use computers and cell phones at night, it is often more difficult for them to sleep. Some scientists also think that cell phones may cause health problems because of a kind of energy which they produce called radiation (辐射).
A. This is not just a health problem for cigarette smokers.
B. But in a changing world, there are changing health problems.
C. When someone has diabetes, there is too much sugar in their blood.
D. They also mostly ate natural foods like fruit, vegetables, fish, and meat.
E. Some diseases can move from animals to people, and they can spread very fast.
F. People also worry about new health problems caused by computers and cell phones.

Imagine growing fuel (燃料) on trees or getting it from rubbish. Imagine cars that run on air or produce water, not pollution! All around the world, people are making surprising new fuels.
Biogas is made from plants or natural waste by living things called bacteria (细菌). People can use animal and food waste to make biogas. Bacteria break the waste down in a special container (容器), and the gas (气体) is used for cooking and lights. Just one kilogram of waste produces enough biogas to make a light work for four hours. In Sweden, they even make biogas for cars from toilet waste!
Biofuels are made from fuels that grow. It is great because we make it from the waste parts of plants that we already grow for food. The newest biofuels are made from very small living things called algae (藻类). Algae produce more energy than other biofuels, and they can grow in places where we do not grow food, like seas and wasteland. In Brazil, cars and buses have used bioethanol for years.
The cleanest fuel is hydrogen (氢). When hydrogen burns, it just makes water, but this gas is difficult to produce. In 2010, engineers invented a machine which uses energy from the sun to make hydrogen. Other people are trying to use bacteria to make it. These "clean" ways of making hydrogen are still very new. If they become cheaper, we may all drive hydrogen cars in the future.
Every year, scientists are inventing new ways to make super fuels from the things around us. Which energy technologies will we use most in the future? We do not know the answer to this question exactly. But we do know that we are starting to build a future without fossil fuels.
(1)、What is Biogas made from?A、Energy from the sun. B、Plants or natural waste. C、Small living things called algae.(2)、Which of the following is the cleanest fuel?A、Biogas. B、Biofuels. Scientists in Australia have used Artificial Intelligence (AI) to help them locate (定位) an endangered bird called the Plains-wanderer. This new information will help scientists protect the rare (稀有的) birds.
The Plains-wanderer is a small bird that lives in Australia's grasslands. They play an important role in controlling insects and spreading seeds, which helps create healthier habitats (栖息地) for other native wildlife in Australia. The birds were once common in eastern Australia. But that's changed, as grasslands have been turned into farms and cities. Zoos Victoria, the group behind the recent effort to locate Plains-wanderers, says the birds' numbers have fallen by over 85% in recent decades. Scientists believe there are now only 250 to 1,000 of the birds left in the wild.
To protect these rare birds, Zoos Victoria first had to learn where they were. Female Plains-wanderers make an unusual "Ooom" call, and this was the key to locating them. The researchers set up 35 special recording devices (装置) called "song meters" in nine different grassy areas, where Plains-wanderers could possibly have been. The song meters collected tens of thousands of hours of recordings-far more than humans could analyze (分析). Then the researchers fed the recordings to an AI system trained to identify (识别) the calls of Plains-wanderers. The AI system discovered Plains-wanderer calls coming from two of the sites. After that, the scientists double-checked and found that the AI system was correct. Chris Hartnett, who works with Zoos Victoria, says the discovery is "huge". And it is the first time in over 30 years that the Plains-wanderer has been found west of Melbourne.
The new information of Plains-wanderers will help scientists protect the birds. The team plans to work with the land owners to help protect the birds, and the grasslands they depend on. Now, the researchers are still "listening"—using song meters and AI to try to locate more of the Plains-wanderers.
(1)、Where do the Plains-wanderers live?A、In Australia's grasslands. B、In Victoria Zoo. C、In the city of Melbourne.(2)、Why are the Plains-wanderers endangered?A、They are too small to live in Australia's grasslands. B、Their habitats have been turned into farms and cities. C、They play an important role in protecting native wildlife.(3)、What is the right order of locating the Plains-wanderers?①collect enough recordings ②use AI to identify the calls
③set up recording devices ④double-check the discovery
A、①②③④ B、②③④① C、③①②④(4)、What will the researchers do next according to the passage?A、Use song meters to help make AI more intelligent. B、Work with the land owners to help grow rice better. C、Locate more Plains-wanderers to help protect them. -

In the fall of 2022, my husband got a chance to spend three years in Nanjing teaching international law. When we got to China, I began to study Chinese. It was really hard for me to speak putonghua.
For me, it wasn't the grammar. "I want to buy this book" is pretty straightforward: "我想买这本书". And I could memorize lots of Chinese characters (hanzi). However, many words sound alike but mean something different. Take the sound "jiàn" for example, it always leaves me guessing-the warship (舰) or the arrow (箭), to meet (见) or to build (建)?
Then, somewhere along the way, I started talking to people around me in Chinese. I tried to communicate with the women in the markets about how to cook vegetables. Sometimes I talked to taxi drivers about the songs on the radio. Gradually I could listen to songs and understand the lyrics without looking them up. I finally reached the point where I could enjoy living in China without using a dictionary.
Now, as our year is up and we pack up to leave, I'm finding my Chinese has improved. I search Baidu maps in Chinese, keep my mobile phone Contacts in Chinese, and send WeChat messages to Chinese friends in Chinese. But mostly, I don't worry about my performance anymore and enjoy every experience to speak Chinese. Every language is different. For me, finally, I've learned that the key to learning Chinese is to enjoy living in China.
(1)、When did the writer start to learn Chinese?A、In 2022. B、In 2023. C、In 2024.(2)、Why does the writer take the sound "jiàn" for example?A、To compare different meanings of the same word. B、To encourage foreigners to memorize Chinese characters. C、To show many words sound alike but have different meanings.(3)、What can we learn from Paragraph 3?A、No rules, no order. B、Practice makes perfect. C、The written word remains.(4)、What is the secret to Chinese learning for the writer?A、Enjoying living in China. B、Using mobile phones more. C、Studying the grammar hard. -

In 1876, Alexander Graham Bell made a great invention—the telephone. For the first time in history, people could talk to someone far away just like they were in the same room. But today, phones can do much more than just making calls!
The story of mobile phones began with two-way radios. These early devices (设备) had a big problem—they only worked when people were close to each other. In the 1940s, smart scientists found a way. They built tall radio towers across the country to pass signals (信号) easily.
Everything changed in 1973 when Dr. Martin Cooper made the first real mobile phone call. During the 1980s, mobile phones became smaller but were still very expensive. Only rich business people could afford them, and the phones looked like big plastic bricks.
The 1990s brought another big change. Phones became cheaper and smaller, fitting easily in pockets. Soon, almost everyone had one. Text messaging became popular. People started writing short messages instead of making phone calls. Meeting time became more flexible (灵活的) because you could just text "I'll be 15 minutes late."
Now we have smartphones—like powerful mini-computers in our pockets. We use them to take photos, watch videos, play games, and even help with housework! Messaging apps let us send videos and long messages easily. While phones help us stay connected, some people worry we spend too much time on them.
Looking back, it's amazing how phones have changed. From Bell's simple telephone to today's smartphones, this has truly changed our lives. What will phones be able to do next? Only time will tell!
(1)、When did Alexander Graham Bell invent the telephone?(2)、Why did scientists build tall radio towers in the 1940s?(3)、Who made the first real mobile phone call?(4)、How can smartphones help us in our life? (请给出两个例子)(5)、What do you think the future phones might be like? (请自拟一句话作答) -

About 160 years ago, theAustrian scientist Mendel did many important experiments(实验) with pea plants. After eight years of careful r, he finally discovered the basic rules of inheritance(遗传). This helped him make great p in the study of biology. But for the next hundred years, people still didn't know why some pea plants were tall while some were short.
Then, amazing news came! A group of international scientists worked t and found more. This team was led by two great scientists, Cheng Shifeng from China and Noel Ellis from the UK. They shared information from their experiments, talked about problems, and tried different ways to s these problems.
The scientists used modern scientific tools to look at Mendel's 1865 experiments again. They wanted to learn more about the genetic(基因的) changes. So, after 2019, they grew more than 700 k of peas from Britain in China. They built special greenhouses to study the plants. Finally, they discovered the changes in pea genetics. What a great s they achieved!
Cheng Shifeng, the group's lead scientist said, "Mendel found out the rules of inheritance many years ago, but he didn't know what a gene was and h it worked. Now we can see the changes clearly from the study."
Scientists once tried to e why some pods (豆荚) are green and others yellow. This study has found out some secrets about genes in DNA. The genes can c the colours of peas.
This study shows that with modern scientific tools, nowadays we can understand the genetic world b. It's a great example of how we keep working out the mysteries of nature.

"Click, click, click... " the drummer hit the drumsticks against each other to give a beat, and the band started to play. Kai played a guqin solo, and for most of the show, he played along with the rhythm of the drums. The band played faster and faster. Kai's classmates jumped to their feet, clapping and screaming. When the music ended, there was an awkward (尴尬的) silence. They all looked at the teachers.
Mr Li asked, "What were you trying to express?"
Kai murmured, "I wanted to do something different... to modernize the guqin's sound. "
"Well, it's a good try. But you know it has over 3,000 years of history. I don't think you've presented the characteristics well. " said Mr Li. "The music was... We could hardly hear the guqin," added Miss Zhou. "I'm afraid I can't give you high marks. "
"Please, can I have another chance?" begged Kai.
They finally agreed.
Alone in the hall later, Kai sat in his chair, feeling a little sad. "I understand what you were trying," Kai looked up and saw Miss Zhou by his side. "But before you can break the rules, you have to master them. "
Kai was puzzled. What did she mean?
"The guqin is connected to nature. The bottom board represents the ground and the rounded top board represents the sky. A wonderful guqin performance shows the harmony (和谐) between people and nature. "
"Miss Zhou, is it fine to play the guqin with other instruments?"
"Because it is so quiet," replied Miss Zhou, "It's usually played alone. Sometimes, it can be played with the dizi or another guqin. Every note matters. And you know, there's Chinese philosophy (哲理) behind every form of art. That's what makes Chinese art special. We should try hard to keep the value of traditions and connect them with modern life. "
"Is it true that Confucius played the guqin?"
"Exactly. Confucius believed that music was necessary for a well-rounded education. It could help a person develop his inner self. "
"Can I make it modern?" Kai was wondering if he had asked a stupid question.
"Ancient musicians followed traditions to show respect. To modernize it, try to find the right way to keep the value. How will you change your piece?"
"I'm not sure yet," said Kai. "But I'm going to do something different again. "
That night, Kai kept thinking about the next show. "How can I present the guqin and balance the traditional spirit with a modern touch?" he wondered.

17、 请认真阅读下列短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
①Do you sometimes feel too afraid to try new things? If you want to grow and get better, you need to take risks and challenge yourself. But your brain often tells you to stay safe. It might say, "Don't trouble trying something new. " Even when these thoughts aren't reasonable, our anxiety (担心) can still win. Instead of thinking about the good things that could happen, we worry more about "What if something goes wrong?"
②Avoiding all risks might seem smart, but it can make you feel unhappy. The problem is that we often make decisions based on feelings, not facts. We think, "The more scared I feel, the riskier it is. " But feelings aren't always reasonable. If we knew how to think about risks clearly, we'd know which risks are worth taking. For example, trying a new hobby like painting might feel scary at first, but it could bring you joy and new skills.
③Whether you're afraid to change your job or too nervous to ask a friend for coffee, learning to take "good risks" can improve your life. Here are good ways to help.
④Balance feelings with facts. Many times, we think fear means something risky. But that's not true. For example, driving a car feels safe because we do it every day, but giving a speech in public might make your heart beat fast. Yet the fact shows that car accidents are much more common than getting hurt while speaking! So before you avoid doing something scary, take three deep breaths and ask yourself: "What's the real risk here?"
⑤Take steps to succeed. You can do many small things to lower risks. If you're nervous about a test, make a study plan and review each day—this helps you feel more prepared. It's okay to feel butterflies in your stomach when you try something new. Facing fear helps build your mental muscle, just like exercising builds physical muscle. So, taking smart risks helps you____become mentally stronger. Each time you try something scary, you will learn to deal with uncertainty and anxiety. You'll also get new skills and grow from mistakes. If you try out for a dance team and don't make it, you can ask for the reason and then practise more. With practice, you'll get better at facing risks, and your chances of success will rise.
(1)、Which of the following is TRUE according to the first two paragraphs?A、Avoiding risks is a smart way to stay happy. B、Taking risks requires us to trust our feelings. C、Our brain often tells us to face challenges bravely. D、Our feelings often influence us to make decisions.(2)、What does the underlined phrase "build your mental muscle" mean in the last paragraph?A、Develop strength in your mind. B、Exercise your body to stay healthy. C、Think mainly about cheerful things. D、Avoid situations that make you afraid.(3)、What is the structure of this passage? (①=Paragraph 1, ②=Paragraph 2 …)A、B、
C、
D、
(4)、What is the main idea of the passage?A、Taking smart risks can push us forward. B、Trying many small things can reduce risks. C、Learning clearly about real risks can help a lot. D、Practising more can help deal with risks better. -

Modern sports began in England in the early 19th century and then spread globally. These became the models for sports such as football that we play now.
Sports come in many shapes and sizes. Organized sports, whether swimming or ice hockey, are serious forms of play. There are rules to obey, skills and positions to learn, and plans to carry out. Team sports like soccer require you to work with teammates while individual (个人的) sports such as tennis focus on your personal performance.
There's no doubt that sports are valuable. The American Academy of Pediatrics says play is important for kids' and teens' thinking, body, social life and feelings. Sports exercise our bodies and teach us about ourselves and our world. Organized sports get us using our bodies and minds, which makes us more imaginative, curious, and creative. The skills we learn can help us in school and later at work.
In an ideal world, sports would always be fun. But in reality, sports can cause physical hurt like broken bones, and also harm in mind. In team sports, misunderstandings and hurt feelings are part of the learning process. Sports are supposed to bring people together, but they can also drive people apart. But even when they're not always a cheerful experience, they show us how to face life's challenges.
You don't have to be on a school team. But many, like school coaches, have found ways to make play their work, which makes them feel whole.
There's no better place to play and learn about the world than on a sports field. No matter what sport you choose, the key is to play for fun. When you do, you're already a winner.

Hundreds of years ago, ideas like flying to another city through the air sounded like dreams. Yet now scientific study has made them real. Could other fairy tales come true someday?
Sleeping Beauty
Could anyone sleep for 100 years? Probably not. The daily cycle of sleep and waking is set in your body. But animals like bears can hibernate (冬眠) through the winter until it warms.
If scientists can work out how animals hibernate, maybe one day people could hibernate too. It would be great for astronauts to sleep through the long space journey. But hibernating animals still grow older, so a future Sleeping Beauty might wake up as a Sleeping Grandma.
Talk to Animals
Talking to animals isn't quite easy. But scientists are trying. Tiny cameras and microphones have collected thousands of hours of animal conversations. Powerful computer programs study animal sounds and match them with possible meanings. Soon they may let us talk back.
But there are still challenges. Many animals communicate with smells, body languages, and sounds that humans can't hear. And animals don't think like people. So, when we think they're giving directions to the castle, they're more likely to be saying "This is my tree!"
Let Down Your Hair
Rapunzel lowers her long hair to let visitors in. But could hair really hold up a prince?
Surprisingly, yes! A scientific study has found out that a single hair can hold 3 ounces, the weight of a small tomato. And a common head has about 100,000 hairs. All those together could hold up a couple of elephants. A prince? No problem.
However, Rapunzel would also need a shorter tower. Human hair only grows a few feet long. The longest hair ever recorded is about 18 feet long—pretty short for a tower.

My family had never done anything different before. So when Aunt Jen invited us to her 1 spring farm party, I was really excited. I decided to make the day special, so I baked cupcakes for the party and decorated them to look like soft sheep by using some 2 .
"Yummy!" My sister Indi said with a laugh, quickly stealing a candy.
"That's enough, Indi! I need those for my sheep!"
"Do real sheep eat these?"
"They're just for making the cupcakes look 3 !" I laughed too.
Soon, Indi and my brother Tex joined in. They 4 so many candies that their cupcakes looked more like strange animals than my sheep.

"Wow!" I cried. "It's like 13 !"
"Migration (迁徙) season," Dad said, "These birds travel through California every spring—millions of them!"
