Zhang Liang studied the book hard and became a great strategist. He helped Liu Bang win many wars and build the Han Dynasty. This story tells us to be patient and respectful, and good things will come.

We do it first thing in the morning, last thing at night, and perhaps every hour in between: scrolling(刷手机).

Scrolling is one of those things that 20 years ago none of us ever did, but now most of us do it hundreds of times a day. You may even be doing it now! But here's the thing: we know it doesn't make us happy!

People prefer talking to strangers over scrolling on their phones, a study has found—— but that doesn't always mean we make the right choice.

Researchers from the US wanted to compare the way people expected to feel about doing three activities, and how people actually felt after doing them. These three activities were using a smartphone, having a conversation with a stranger and sitting alone.

One group of participants predicted how they would feel when doing each of these activities, giving them a score out of 100. Another group completed each activity and gave them a score out of 100 based on how positive they felt.

While the researchers thought people might underestimate(低估) the positive feelings they would get from talking to a stranger, they didn't. People predicted this would give them the most positive feelings, and it did!

Another group was given more choices about what to do on their phones: watch videos, text, or scroll social media. Or they could talk to a stranger, or sit alone.

This time, watching videos was predicted to be the most positive activity, followed by talking to a stranger. However, among those who actually did it, the researchers still found that talking to a stranger was most likely to improve people's moods(情绪). And sitting alone was always last.

So will we all scroll less and talk more?

Do you get in trouble for feeding your dog on food from dinner under the table? A new study suggests that by sharing "people food", you might actually be helping to keep your pet healthy. Many dogs are fed dry processed food. Science has shown that a diet of processed food is not healthy for humans. Scientists from the University of Helsinki, in Finland, say this diet is not good for our pet dogs, either.

A total of 8,500 young pet dogs took part in the study. The owners were asked about what food they had fed their pets and how often. According to the survey, processed dog food harms dogs a lot. The most serious problem is obesity(肥胖). This will make dogs fat, which always causes heart problems and serious stomachache. What comes next is the teeth problems. The dry processed food can be bad for dogs' teeth, especially for the baby dogs. It can also lead to other mouth problems. Meanwhile, the low-quality ingredients in processed food make dogs' immune system(免疫系统) not as strong as they should be, pushing dogs easier to get sick and have skin problems like hair loss. When the dogs reached adulthood, about 20% of the dogs showed CE symptoms(慢性肠胃不适症状). However, if dogs had been fed a mixed diet while young, it was 22% less possible for the CE symptoms later in life.

The scientists discovered that the food a dog might find in an owner's home such as eggs, fish, meat and vegetables may be better than a diet of just dog food. This is because having different kinds of food leads to more variety(多样性) in microbes(微生物). There are millions of them in human and animal bodies, and they play important roles in helping us digest(消化) food. Dr. Anna Hielm Bjorkman told The Times of London, "Dog food on sale is described as providing a complete diet for the dogs and convenience to the owners. But as the wise owners, we should know what is good for our friends. Nobody would give 12 years of the same food to a child—— why should a dog?"

When it comes to mobile payments in China, the QR code is king. However, Alipay is trying to change that with Tap!, a new payment function. With Tap!, shoppers no longer need to scan a QR code. They simply place their phone close to a tiny machine and the payment goes through.  The secret here lies in a technology called NFC, or Near Field Communication.

NFC is based on magnetic field induction(磁场感应). When two NFC-enabled devices are near each other, a magnetic field is created.

NFC technology has been around for many years. Two technology companies, Sony and Philips, were the first to develop NFC technology back in 2002. However, it only took off when Apple Pay appeared in 2014.Today, the technology has many useful apps in our daily lives. For example, you can use a phone with an NFC chip to op er the door of your apartment building. There's even NFC pet tags. By simply tapping a smartphone to the ID tag, the user can get the pet's important information. This makes it easier to quickly find a lost pet.

Compared with scanning a QR code, "tap and go" at the checkout is much more convenient by using a secret code only your bank can read. That's because its range(范围) is so short that thieves would need to press their device against yours to steal your data or money.

 Actually, they can support each other. "When paying at a parking lot, for example, QR codes are better," said a researcher. "NFC only works when the phone is a few centimeters from a payment device," he adds. So, pick the best fit. QR for far, NFC for near.

At 2:20 p. m. on March 28th,2025, a powerful earthquake(7.9 strength) hit central Myanmar(缅甸).Eleven-year-old Khin was sleeping when the shaking suddenly woke her. Before she could move, her wooden house began breaking   . "Get under the table!" shouted her father as walls fell around them.

Khin's story teaches us that hope never disappears, even in . Broken buildings remind us of the earthquake, but they also show human courage. As Ms. Aye told reporters, "That night showed how we can be when we refuse to give up. I will keep whatever happened there in mind forever."

You must have read or heard of the sad love story between Jia Baoyu and Lin Daiyu. But can you imagine the two characters singing opera in English instead of speaking Chinese?

Jia and Lin are two characters from the classic Chinese novel A Dream of Red Mansions(《红楼梦》).Now the book has been made into an English-language opera. After being performed in San Francisco, US,the performance came to Beijing, Changsha and Wuhan.

Many of the opera's creators have backgrounds in both Chinese and American cultures, including the director and playwrights. Their understanding of both cultures helped them change a Chinese classic into a foreign-language opera.

The book, which covers the rise and fall of the Jia family, has 120 chapters and hundreds of characters.But opera writer David Henry Hwang cut down the number of characters to just seven. Hwang, a Chinese-American, focused on the love story between Jia and Lin and tried to write a heartbreaking tragedy(悲剧)that everyone would understand.

The art director Timmy Yip, from Hong Kong, tried to help foreign people understand the characters using costumes and stage settings(布景). He compared Lin to water and gave her a light green costume.When Lin showed up on stage, there was usually water around her on the stage.

The creators considered it to be a meaningful job to introduce a Chinese classic to Western audiences.Hwang told China Daily he was happy to"have made a contribution(贡献) to the land where my parents were born".

Last Friday afternoon, I was at a restaurant eating with my family. Just as we finished up, a homeless man entered with a trolley full of his belongings, clearly very hot from walking outside and clearly hungry and thirsty.

We got up to leave. As we did, he walked past us and sat at the table we'd just left, and started eating the chips we left. We noticed the staff nodded to each other to clear away the plates from the table.

When we were walking out, we heard someone say, "Excuse me." It was the man who had sat at our table. He noticed I'd left my wallet behind and was walking towards us to give it back. I said thank you and my husband then ordered him a meal and a few drinks to express our thanks.

While we were walking away and on the drive home, I was explaining to my 6-year-old child what had happened and the importance of helping others, as well as being thankful to have a home to live in and food to eat.

Two days later, I looked in my wallet for a card and realized I had $50 cash in there all along. How I wished I could have given it to the man! My attention was just too focused on trying to explain the importance of kindness to my child.

This world may be hard even at the best of times, but there are some truly beautiful and honest hearts out there. May we all try and do what we can when we can to make someone's day a little brighter.
