Playground Safety Rules

Playgrounds are great places to have fun. But you need to have fun without getting hurt.  

Getting ready to play

Wear shoes to keep your feet safe.  Wet equipment can be slippery (滑的) and might lead to a fall. 

Don't play on broken equipment. Tell an adult if any playground equipment is broken. 

Slides (滑梯)

Go down the slide, one person at a time. 

Don't go down the slide until the person in front of you has reached the ground and moved away from the slide. 

Never climb up the front of the slide. 

Climbing

Climb stairs or steps slowly. Hold onto the handrails (栏杆). 

Swinging

Sit down on the swing and slow down before getting off. 

Be careful when you walk in front of a moving swing. You don't want to get hit. 

If something goes wrong

Remembering the above rules will help keep you safe and prevent accidents.  If there's a problem or if someone gets hurt in the playground, ask an adult for help at once. 

New winter coat rule

The coldest months of winter have arrived. But Woodchurch High School in the UK has banned (禁止) students from wearing expensive down coats (羽绒服) after Christmas.

This is to stop ‘poverty-shaming (贫困羞辱)' among its students, the Independent noted. Coat brands like Canada Goose and Moncler sell for￡1,000 (8,674 yuan), a cost that only the richest families are able to cover. Poor students feel left out when they see others wear these coats.

"These coats cause a lot of inequality (不平等)," head teacher Rebekah Phillips told CNN. "They stigmatize (使……感到羞耻) students and parents who are less well off."

Most parents are happy with the ban, saying that school shouldn't be a place where students' economic background distracts them from learning. Small changes like this have led low-income students to become more engaged in school, BBC noted.

But some people don't agree with it. They question why children shouldn't be allowed to wear clothes that keep them warm in winter. "Each child should have the freedom to choose what he or she wants to wear," Jillian Roberts, a professor at the University of Victoria in Canada, told Global News.

But Woodchurch isn't the first school to take such steps. In May, a UK primary school banned expensive pencil cases, according to Daily Mail. In 2017, the US state of New Mexico even passed a law saying that it is illegal (违法的) to single out or humiliate (羞辱) a child who can't pay for his or her lunch at school.

Students must follow rules at schools. But some schools have unusual (特别的) school rules.

In a school in the USA, students cannot wear some winter clothing like jackets or hats in class. Because they are "criminal symbols (犯罪标志)". But it is freezing in winter and the students don't understand (理解) why they cannot wear warm clothes in school.

An American college has many rules. One of them is that a student must make his bed by 9:00 a.m. every day. One student said if he wanted to sleep on Saturday morning, he must get up to make his bed before 9 o'clock. Then he went back to sleep on top of the quilt. He thought it was interesting.

Students in a school in Japan cannot bring food from home. They can get food from school during their meal time. What's more, students must not talk at lunch. If a student doesn't follow the rules, he has to sit by himself on a chair with no table.

Teachers in some parts of the UK and Australia mustn't grade (打分) their students' homework with red ink (墨水). Because the schools think red color makes children unhappy when they get their graded homework. Teachers must use other colors like blue, purple, yellow or even with a pencil.
