The 31st Summer Universiade was a great success for China and even for the world. The important meeting began on July 28th, 2023 and closed successfully on August 8th, 2023. And it provided a window into the city's rich culture and natural beauty. 

As a volunteer, my role was to help the players in their everyday lives and find out that they had an enjoyable experience during their stay in Chengdu.  One of them was watching the ceremonies. The fantastic shows made all people excited. People shouted all the time.  Although we speak different languages, we were able to communicate through smiles, body languages and a shared love for sports. I learned much from them. Of course, the hot food in Chengdu is so delicious that everyone just wants to stay in Chengdu for a longer time. The most memorable(难忘的） one was the kindness of the Chengdu people.  It made me feel warm just like at home. After the game, we went to watch cute pandas and visited some places of interest. What impressed(给. …留下深刻印象)me most was the beautiful bronze ware(青铜器)in Sanxingdui Ruins. It felt like traveling back in time! I really had a great time. 

As the first world-class sports event to be held in western China, the Chengdu FISU World University Games was a success. It made the popularity of Chengdu and China rise.  Its spirit will live on and the light of the games will continue to shine(发光)in the future.

It is interesting that I read the books borrowed from libraries faster than those I bought. The reason is the books I bought don't have a due date! I don't need to return those books. Having a reading goal helps you work out how much reading you need to do in a week or even a day. Before you read each book, ask yourself what time you need to complete this book by. 

When you think of a forest, what do you see? Just trees? Or do you see many other things, such as singing birds, colorful plants and wild flowers?

The forest is a whole world of its own. It is full of many different living things. But even though they are all different, they have one thing in common: they all need each other in order to live on. 

The trees feed(养活) the forest"people"by making food in their leaves; by using sunlight to join water and minerals(矿物质) from the soil and air. Their deep network of roots（根） joins the soil together and stops it from dying out(逐渐消失), making it possible for living things to live in it. 

Human beings（人类） are like the living things in the forest. We need the farmers to grow our food, railroad and truck drivers to bring it to our shops and clerks (职员) to sell it to us. We need people to prepare our food and cook it and others to take our waste things away. Then, of course, we need doctors, nurses, government leaders, mailmen, telephone operators, and many others. 

We also need other human beings in another way. We need people for friendship, to talk over our problems, exchange(交换) ideas. Think how lonely and unhappy you would be if you lived all alone. 

 Life is a matter of giving and taking. We need to help other people as much as we need other people to help us. Think what a good feeling you have when you have done something for someone else. You know, being a volunteer is so great!

Should children do chores? Some people think that children should not do chores, but many experts believe that children can benefit(受益)from doing chores. They can learn problem-solving and independence from doing chores. 

However, most experts agree that the chores should fit the children. For example, young children shouldn't wash the dishes or take out the rubbish. Instead , they can do the chores like picking up toys, putting books in the bookcase. . . to keep the home tidy. In fact, young children usually would like to do chores because they like doing what mom or dad does,and that helps them feel more grown-up. 

As the children grow older, many experts advise giving them more difficult chores like washing the dishes and walking the dog. However, children usually do not want to do the chores, The middle school students may spend more than two hours a night on their homework. Perhaps more chores on the weekend, not on weekdays can be helpful. 

Dragon Head-raising Day (龙抬头日) is celebrated on the second day of the second Chinese lunar(农历) month to show respect to Dragon King and wish good weather for a big harvest(收获). 

It is considered the start of spring and farming. After the cold winter, spring comes and animals are awake, but because of the winter, the weather is dry and farming needs water. The story goes that after this day, the Dragon King who controls clouds and rains would wake from his winter sleep and bring rainfall(降雨) for the crops(庄稼). 

On that day, there are lots of traditional celebration activities. First, in the early morning when it's still dark, families go to a river or a well with lanterns to get water and then carry it back home. Then they light candles, burn incense sticks (香柱) and offer a sacrifice (祭品). This ritual is named Yintianlong (lead the field dragon). People believe the actions can bring wealth and health to their homes. 

The most well-known tradition on the day is having a haircut（理发）. It's a sign of good luck and energy in the whole year. However, it is very bad luck to get a haircut during the first lunar month. 

Eating "dragon" food is another important part of celebrations. Chinese are best at connecting certain food with luck so food eaten on this day also gets special names. Noodles which are long and thin are called "dragon beard (longxu). " Dumplings are called "dragon ears (longer). " Spring rolls are "dragon scales (longlin)", and people call popcorn "dragon seeds (longzi)". 

Those celebration activities may be different in the south and the north, and some activities are remained to nowadays, while some are just kept in the past. But the wish for a good year ahead is the same despite(即使) the change of time or space.

From an airplane, cars on the roads look like tiny ants, However, unlike cars, ants avoid traffic jams. Researchers are now studying how ants cooperate to help design self-driving cars that don't get blocked in traffic. 

Traffic flow (流量) becomes uncertain when too many cars are on the road. When there are about 15 cars per mile, one driver slowing down or stopping can start a chain reaction (连锁反应) that causes a traffic jam. Katsuhiro Nishinari, a researcher from the University of Tokyo, studies this problem. 

Nishinari's earlier work found that ants don't get jammed up even in crowded conditions. So what's their secret? In a recent study, researchers watched ants and used traffic models to study their movement, They discovered that ants travel in small groups of three to twenty, moving at the same speed and keeping safe space between each other, They don't speed up to pass others. This avoid jams in the flow of their movement. 

Unlike ants, human drivers at rush hour are hardly willing to follow such rules, and that causes traffic jams, However, self-driving cars could be programmed to cooperate. These cars would share information with nearby cars to optimize traffic flow, much like ants use smell to communicate. 

Ants have many advantages, such as being able to walk on walls when blocked. There is something drivers can learn from them: don't drive too closely behind another car. Keeping space between cars can avoid unnecessary slowing down or stopping, which helps traffic flow without creating traffic jams. Simple cooperation, like ants, could help reduce traffic problems. 

The Beijing Central Axis(中轴线) shows a group of buildings and archaeological (考古的) sites that follow the traditional Chinese way of planning a capital city. It has been added to the UNESCO ( United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) World Heritage List, becoming China's 59th World Heritage Site. 

Stretching 7. 8 kilometers north to south through the heart of Beijing, the property includes 15 parts, with the Bell and Drum Towers at the northern end and Yongdingmen Gate at the southern end. The complex includes imperial palaces and gardens, sacrificial(祭祀的) buildings, ancient city management facilities(设施), national ceremonial (仪式的) and public buildings, and central axis road remains. 

According to Lyu Zhou from Tsinghua University, there is a description of this way of planning cities in the Kaogongji《考工记》( Book of Diverse Crafts), written before 221BC. 

The book mentions " court in the front, market in the back, " which matches the Forbidden City and the markets at the Bell and Drum Towers area. It also includes " an ancestral temple on the left, an altar of land and grain on the right, " referring to the Imperial Ancestral Temple and the Alt ar of Land and Grain, located on the east and west sides of the Central Axis. 

Construction of the Beijing Central Axis began in the 13^th century and took shape in the 16^th century. It has been refined over the past seven centuries and continues to influence Beijing's development today.

The Altay Ski Theme Post Office has become the first post office in China to offer canned (罐装的) air for sale. Cans of Altay's air are designed like postcards. Customers can write messages and addresses on the packaging (外包装). Since the sale began, over 200 cans have been sold. It showed the surprising need for the special gift.

"We wanted to make Altay's air into a special gift, so that more tourists can take home a piece of our pleasant air," said Pan Ting, head of the Altay Ski Theme Post Office.

The air in the cans is collected from the southern part of the Altay Mountains, a place near a forest. The air is collected on sunny days after rain, making sure it is fresh. It is believed to have health benefits.

The sale is aimed at developing Altay's skiing tourism. In Altay, there is a 12, 000-year-old cave painting. It shows people used animal skins to ski in the Stone Age.

Canned air as a product is not new. In Inner Mongolia, people in the city of Hulunbuir (呼伦贝尔) have a similar product. They sell the clean air of the grasslands.
