For over thirty years, the Hubble Space Telescope (望远镜) had helped scientists get a deeper understanding of outer space. Then in the year 2022, its successor, the James Webb Space Telescope, entered service.

Just like Hubble, the new telescope is named after a famous person. However, while Edwin Hubble was a widely-respected astronomer (天文学家), James E. Webb was neither a scientist nor an engineer. So why is he worth remembering?

To find out the answer to this question, let's go back to 1961. By then, Webb had enjoyed working in public service. He was invited to work as the leader of NASA. However, he was unwilling to take the job since he knew little about science and technology. But he was told that NASA needed a leader with excellent management skills. Finally he had to accept the invitation.

Under Webb's management, NASA made great progress in its exploration of space. The organization developed robotic spacecraft to explore the moon. It also sent space probes (航天探测器) to Mars and Venus.

____. One of the worst accidents in the history of spaceflight happened on January 27,1967. Three astronauts died during a test. After the accident, Webb tried his best to lead the organization to correct all of the problems. His hard work helped NASA achieve more future success. In July 1969, nine months after Webb had retired (退休) from NASA, Apollo 11's astronaut Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon.

Webb played an important role in human exploration of the space. He turned people's imagination into reality. It's no wonder that NASA decided to remember this man by naming its new space telescope after him.

On May 22, 2021, people in China and around the world felt sad. China's "Father of hybrid rice (杂交水稻)" Yuan Longping died at the age of 91 on this day. He was a famous scientist in China and spent over 50 years making rice plants that could grow more rice to feed people.

 For Chinese families, rice is an important part of almost every meal. But in the past, the lack (短缺) of enough rice was a big problem. Many people died because they had no food. To solve the problem, Yuan Longping decided to study agriculture (农业). His mother worried this work would be hard. But Yuan said, "Having enough food was the most important thing for us."

 In the 1960s, many Chinese suffered from hunger. Yuan began developing a kind of hybrid rice. It had high output (产量). By planting it, people could have more food. In the 1970s, Yuan successfully grew a new type of hybrid rice, which could feed millions more people every year! Yuan's hybrid rice is also being grown around the world. People plant it in countries such as India, Vietnam and the US. It has pulled millions of people out of hunger.

 Yuan once said he had two dreams. One was to someday stand under rice plants that were taller than men. The other was to grow hybrid rice all over the world and save people from hunger. Rest in peace, Grandpa Yuan. We will work hard to make your dreams come true!

Zhou Shen's musical journey began ten years ago. At that time, he was just a fresh graduate from college. Standing on the stage of The Voice of China, he looked unimpressive. But once he opened his mouth, his beautiful voice impressed everyone. 

The talented singer didn't go very far in the show. Since then, however, he has kept working towards his music dream. He has sung every song with heart. He has always believed that one day he would sing on a very big stage. 

That day finally came on April 18. On Chinese Language Day, Zhou performed his new song, "Ode to Peace (《和平颂》) ," at the United Nations headquarters (联合国总部) in New York. Singing the song at a place that calls for peace was very meaningful for the singer. "I hope more people can hear it and realize the importance of peace," he said. 

Zhou was born and grew up in a mountain village in Hunan province. His humble roots made him especially proud to sing on the international stage. "As a very ordinary person who comes from an ordinary place, I stand here today, And so can you," said Zhou.

On October 30th, 2018, the Chinese-speaking world lost a literary (文学的) giant-Louis Zha Leung-yung (查良镛) who was widely known by his pen name, Jin Yong. The greatest writer died in Hong Kong at the age of 94 after a long illness.

Born in Haining in 1924, Zha had planned to become a diplomat (外交官). But he began working as a reporter in 1947 to support his studies. He moved to Hong Kong and then founded (成立) the local Chinese-language newspaper Ming Bao.

In 1955, Zha published his first wuxia novel The Book and the Sword (《书剑恩仇录》). The novel turned out to be a great success. Zha continued to write 14 hugely popular wuxia novels, ending with The Deer and the Cauldron (《鹿鼎记》) in 1972. In these novels, Zha successfully created an imagined world of jianghu and also some of the most well-known characters in the history of Chinese literature. He used stories from history and traditional Chinese culture to make his books rich and colorful.

Jin Yong was considered as a greatest wuxia novelists with over 300 million copies in book sales. Many of his popular novels were made into movies, TV series and video games in later years. His books have been translated into many languages. They have greatly influenced popular culture.

Jin Yong has won the hearts of many, from primary school students to university professors, from national leader Deng Xiaoping to billionaire (亿万富翁) Ma Yun. Some people have compared Jin Yong to French writer Alexandre Dumas and American writer George R. R. Martin.

When Jin died, the whole world felt shocked. Ma Yun, a lifelong lover of wuxia said, "It is a huge loss for Chinese people around the world. And it's especially sad for us as Zha's wuxia spirit has become a core value of Alibaba. Plenty of workers in Alibaba gave themselves nicknames drawn from characters in Jin Yong's novels." Many stars at home and abroad also shared their sadness at the news of Zha' s death.

At 1:02 p.m. on May 22, 2021, liver (肝) surgeon (外科医生) Wu Mengchao, 99, died in Shanghai. He was 1 as the founder of hepatobiliary (肝胆的) surgery in the country and was the teacher of about 80% of the nation's experts and doctors working on liver surgery today. Wu operated on thousands of patients, and 2 at least 16,000 lives. 

Five minutes later, with family members singing his favorite songs softly to him in Changsha, agricultural scientist Yuan Longping 3 at the age of 91. He was famous as "the father of hybrid rice", who helped lift the nation out of 4 . 

The two devoted their lives to saving and improving people's lives. Together with generations of their students, they not only made a big 5 to the lives of Chinese people, but also many living in other 6 and least-developed countries.

My Favourite Art Course

Friday is Peter's favourite day, because he has two history lessons in the afternoon. It is his favourite subject. He thinks history is interesting. After these two lessons, he has a geography lesson. He says geography is useful. School is over at 5:00 on Friday afternoon. Peter can play ping-pong with his classmates from 5:10 to 7:10. 

Peter doesn't like weekends, because he is very busy at weekends. He has an English lesson on Saturday morning and a music lesson on Saturday afternoon. On Sunday morning, he has an art lesson. And on Sunday afternoon, he has a basketball lesson. He only has time to do his homework(家庭作业) on Saturday and Sunday evenings.

In our school, students in different grades like different subjects. 

In Grade Seven, students' favourite subject is always Chinese, because it's their mother tongue and it's easy for them. And most of them don't like English. They think English is very difficult. And they like PE and music too. Students at this age like playing sports. They can play soccer, basketball and other sports in PE classes. Why is music welcome? Because most of them think music is relaxing(令人放松的). 

In Grade Eight, some students like maths very much. But they aren't very good at maths, because maths in Grade Eight is a little difficult. Students in Grade Eight also like science and Chinese geography. They can learn a lot from science. And they also say they seem(似乎) to go around China after geography classes. 

In Grade Nine, English is some students' favourite subject. It's useful. Students often talk in English after school. They even watch English programmes(节目) on TV to learn more.
