Sally woke suddenly. She heard strange sounds; she could smell smoke. The room was full of smoke. She coughed. What was happening? Her bedroom door opened with a bang and her mother ran in, her face white. 

"Get up, Sally. We have to go! Get dressed now！" her mother shouted. 

Sally jumped from her bed and opened the window. Cries came from the streets below. Sally watched people throw their things into carts (马车). 

"Hey, what's happening？" Sally shouted. 

"Fire！" her neighbour shouted back. 

"Coming from Pudding Lane! Get out now, Sally! No one is safe！"

Sally pulled her window shut and got changed as quickly as she could. Downstairs (在楼下), she found her father, mother and sister putting their things into a cart. They watched people trying to put out the big fire with buckets (桶) full of water. It didn't seem to make any difference, as the fire jumped from one building to the next. 

"The houses are so close and made of wood！" Sally noticed. 

The boy, Tom Winter, saw Sally and said, "Some people are going to St. Paul's Cathedral to stay safe. Made of stone. Won't burn like wood. " Sally nodded, but followed her parents down the dark street. 

They walked and walked. Finally, they arrived at Moorfields. It was a wide­open space with no buildings to burn. They were safe. 

If you see someone fall down suddenly, perhaps as a result of a heart attack, what can you do while you are waiting for professional (专业的) help? 

Chen Wenqiaochu set a good example when he was fourteen. He performed CPR (心肺复苏术) on a staff person at his school, saving the man's life in 2013. According to medical experts, there is a "golden period"—the first four minutes of a heart attack. During this time, CPR is the best for saving the person's life. 

In August, 2020, all public schools nationwide were asked to provide CPR courses in China, as part of health education. CPR is not hard to grasp. All that one needs to know is how to watch and decide if a person has a heart attack, where to press on the patient's chest (胸), and how to blow air through the mouth and into the lungs (肺). 

Unluckily, less than one percent of Chinese adults have mastered the skill of CPR, while many have never heard of it. A 2019 survey from China Youth Daily showed that although 64. 6% of schools opened health education courses, the teaching results were not satisfactory (令人满意的). 

Zhao Shengyu, a graduate from a high school, remembered her first time to be taught CPR in the class. "No model, video or practice was included. I realized that the acts I had been taught had lots of mistakes after I was trained another time in a medical school，" she said. According to her own experience, Zhao said more professional CPR courses in schools were necessary. 

Most countries have attached importance to CPR training. It was shown in a survey in 2017 that more than half of Americans had received CPR training. Switzerland, Germany, France and some other countries have also provided CPR training. 

What should you do before, during and after the earthquake?

A few years ago, my sister­in­law started to feel worried about her teenage daughter. And she decided to put a tracking (跟踪) app on the kid's phone. 

At first, this made my sister­in­law "feel better". Then the good situation suddenly ended. She recalled (回想), "I found out that she was in a place that she said she wasn't in. I went out in the middle of the night and found her walking without shoes in the middle of the street with some friends. " Things went downhill (走下坡路) quickly for the mother and the daughter after that. 

With 83% of the teens having their own phones now, according to a study in 2020, more and more of their parents are facing the question: to watch or not?

To watch or not?

Ana Homayoun, an expert (专家) from Harvard University, has advised many parents and their kids about this. "I've found that the tracking app is more acceptable to teens when it is included as part of a family agreement to improve safety than when it is placed as a secret tool to watch them，" she said. 

Mark Bell, a father of a teenage girl, said, "We don't have tracking apps, but we have set some ground rules that my daughter must follow. " For example, his daughter must "friend" him on the social media (媒体) so that he can read the post, and she must share all passwords. When you're trying to build trust, you need to create an environment that encourages it. So, to win their trust, you always need to be straight with your children. "Parents must let children know how and when they'll be watching them，" said Doctor White. "If they're not open about it，" he warns, "it can greatly harm the relationship between a parent and a child. "

Teenagers must learn to stay safe while they are at school or at home. Self­protection is one of the most important  (skill) for teenagers. 

But how can we teenagers protect  (we)? Here are some (suggest). 

First, a student in school should have  information card with him. The information includes the name, the photo，

 (parent) phone numbers and so on. There is also information about how  (deal) with dangerous situations. The card  (make) of a special kind of metal. It can't be destroyed if anything dangerous (happen). 

Second, we should be  (care) when we make friends online. Third,  we are in danger, we must call the police for help  time, so that we can keep ourselves safe. Also, we should eat  (healthy). What's more, if we want to do any  (cook) at home, memorize (记住) safety rules for the kitchen. Remember  (close) the doors and windows when we go out. Last but not least, it is dangerous for us to swim alone. 

In a word, we need to learn how to protect ourselves and stay away  danger. 

Zhang Han is a worker from Changsha. One night, on the way home he heard several loud1 . He quickly ran to the scene (现场) of the2 and found that a car had fallen into the river. 

Zhang jumped into the river3 thinking twice. As soon as he got to the car, he tried to open the doors but4 . What's worse, he couldn't find anything to break the windows. As the water kept going into the car, the people inside were in great5 . So, Zhang tried to break the window on the driver's side with his fist (拳头) and he finally6 it. After saving the driver, he quickly moved to the back window. There was a passenger in the back seat, and she was unconscious. Zhang broke the back window still with his fist and7 her.
