"I've always had a pretty clear idea of what I want to do. " says Mary, a middle school student who wants to become a director some day. You may not be as sure of your career as Mary. But you can start thinking about and planning for your future career. 

The following article helps middle school students plan for careers. 

Explore(探索)your interests. 

Many middle school students don't yet know what they want to do. But in fact, students may change their minds several times, perhaps even after they enter society. And some of tomorrow's careers might not exist(存在) today. Focusing on just one job in middle school isn't necessary. But looking into the kinds of careers you might like can help you succeed.

Understanding what you enjoy and what you're good at is the most important step in exploring careers. If you don't know what you wan to do, you should ask yourself what you like to learn about. If you really like science, what do you enjoy about it -- the lab work or the research? It's important to think about what you like to do, because work will finally be a big part of your life. 

Discover possible careers

Once you've thought about the subjects and activities you like best, the next step is to look for careers that put those interests to use. If you love sports, for example, you might consider a career as a P. E. teacher or a soccer coach. If you like English, a career as an English teacher, a translator or a travelling guide might be a good choice.

After discovering possible jobs, you'll want to learn more about them. Talking directly to workers on the phone, by email, or through online discussion can help you get information about what they do. Even meeting with them in person is helpful. First - hand information is necessary for you to find out if you'll really like a career. 

Ma Hongda is a 23-year- old student. He became the first Chinese person to win the plastering(抹灰) and drywall systems event in the World Skills Competition 2022 Special Edition, which ended recently in Bordeaux, France. 

Ma, who     showed his talent for the competition, was born in 2000 in Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province. He started learning construction and decoration(装饰)at Zhejiang Construction Technician College in Hangzhou when he was 16. 

"In 2017, I applied(申请)to be a member of the college's special training team for the World Skills Competition. More than 200 students applied, and only about 30 passed and stayed for the training after two rounds of hard competition. "

In Bordeaux, the four - day competition had five sections. In these sections, competitors were required to calculate (计 算)the materials they would use based on drawings provided and make the basic structure of their project. Competitors also needed to install the soundproofing(隔音的) materials into the walls, plastering and finishing a freestyle creative decoration. 

For Ma, his tools are all his good "friends" after five years of training. Although he is familiar with each phase of the craft, there were unexpected situations. For example, the size of the plasterboard provided by the organizer was different from what is commonly seen in China. Besides, because of the humidity(潮湿), birds he made as decorations fell from the wall and broke. 

Ma used glue (胶水)to make it complete again and finished the creative molding section just in time. He painted the wall blue, placed a large feather and several birds in white and drew the Eiffel Tower in red, reflecting the colors of the French national flag. 

In Chinese social media, the video of Ma's plastering has been widely shared and discussed. His win with an outstanding skill encouraged many. Ma said he will become a teacher : at the college and pass his knowledge and skills to future students. 

In the US, not many young people were in the skilled trades(技术行业). But now, more young people choose skilled trade jobs like construction and vehicle repairing(汽车维修). Daily Mail reported that the number of students studying construction trades in the US in 2023 was 23 percent more than the year before. The number of students in vehicle repair programs was also 7 percent more. There are many reasons for the differences. ____ What's more, with the fast growth of Al, fewer people are needed to finish the office jobs. However, Al still can't take many people's places in skilled trade jobs. Tanner Burgess, 20, is one of the young people doing skilled trade jobs in the US. "I feel good at the end of the day. I'm physically doing something and I'm happy to finish something I find great," Burgess told The Wall Street Journal.
