In today's connected world, English is more than just a school subject; it is a powerful bridge to the outside world. Xie Zongxu, a post-90s young man from Kaili, Guizhou, has become popular on Douyin by sharing the beauty of his Miao hometown in English.

Xie understands that language is the key to connecting cultures. He decided to make full use of English to share his treasured traditions. In his widely-shared videos, wearing beautiful traditional Miao clothes, he uses interesting and clear English to introduce traditional arts like Miao embroidery (苗绣) , batik (蜡染) and so on. He turns English learning into real-life communication, bringing big traditional festivals, such as the Miao New Year, to life for people around the world.

Xie does more than just share videos online. As a top student from Tsinghua and Oxford, he brings his talents to the international stage. At an important UN conference (联合国会议) , he gave a wonderful speech in English while wearing traditional Miao clothes, sharing stories of how people in his hometown live in peace with nature. Xie has shown the local life of Qiandongnan to people in over 40 countries by using his knowledge to help others understand his hometown.

Xie Zongxu's story shows us that English can be a bridge to connect hearts and cultures. He encourages more young Chinese people to take pride in their cultures and to use their voices to tell Chinese stories to the world.

●Find the positive, however small.

Bad things happen to all of us, but the most important thing is to focus on the positive. For example, next time you are caught in traffic, think how great it is that you can finish listening to your favorite music. Rebecca's mother tried many things. She didn't eat very much in order to save enough food. She didn't even go to the doctor when she was ill. What's more, she sadly sold some old family jewelry (珠宝). Chinese chess is played with "red" and "black" pieces. The two players take turns moving their pieces across the board, and the player holding the red pieces goes first. Both players take turns to make one move each time until a winner is decided. The shuai or jiang is the most important of both sides, and the side whose shuai or jiang is taken fails the game. But it's not easy to play it well.

In all ages, there are always some excellent people who can play xiangqi well. Hu Ronghua, a great master in modern China, is one of them. He was born in Shanghai in 1945, and he won the national championship in 2000. He said his understanding of "the characteristics of a good chess player" is to appreciate (欣赏) the one playing against you, to compete with all one's strength during the game and to be good friends after the game. In the game, it's easy to find appreciation for each other.

Recently, Hu has worked on training younger generations. That's because xiangqi can be passed down as a part of Chinese culture. With the development of our society, it includes the rich culture of our country.

An interview (采访) with Joel Sartore

Joel Sartore is a writer, teacher and photographer (摄影师). His words and photos show his love and care for the world around us.

Question 1: How did you become aNational Geographic(《国家地理》) photographer?

Answer: My first job was for a newspaper.  He liked my photos and said I should send some to the magazine. So I did. Then I got a one — day job. And after that, I got a nine — day job, and so on.

Question 2:

Answer: To get into the National Geographic, you have to give them something they don't have. It's not enough just to be a great photographer. You also need some special skills. You have to, for example, be a scientist, or be able to dive (潜水) under sea ice, or spend some days in a tree.

Question 3: Is it difficult to work as a photographer today?

Answer: Well, technology now makes it easy to take good pictures. I mean there are more photos and photographers. Also, the Internet is full of photos from all around the world. They are free, or cost very little. All magazines need to do is pay for the photos. 

Question 4: I want to be a photographer. Do you have any advice for me?

Answer: Advice? Well, work hard on everything. Take lots of pictures in different places. Look at others' photos and learn from them. And be serious about life. There's something to photograph everywhere.  Do you want to make the world a better place? If so, you'll enjoy the work much more.

①Now many schools have more P.E. classes. This is in response to (响应) China's new standard (标准) on P.E. classes. The standard asks schools to make sure that 10 to 11 percent of all class time must be P.E. classes, third only to Chinese and maths.

How can we hear? Of course we hear sounds with our ears! But do you know how our ears work?

Ask your friend to clap (拍) his hands. Cover (遮盖) your ears. Can you hear your friend clapping hands? Ask your friend to play the piano. Can you hear the sound of the piano? Cover your ears again. What can you find now?

You know that sound makes air vibrate (震动), and then it makes sound waves (声波). Before you can hear the sound, the sound waves must get to your ears.

Our ears are made up of three parts. They are the outer ear, the middle ear and the inner ear. The three parts work together.

You can see the outer ear, It collects the sound around you. Then it goes down into the middle ear and the inner ear, We cannot see these two parts, But they are very important. There are hairs (绒毛) in the inner ear. The hairs help to send sound to your brain (大脑), This way, you can hear sounds around you.

It is sunny today. Mr. Zhang calls the students into the hall of the gym. He tells them there are three rules for playing on the playground. First, they should warm up (做热身运动) before starting to play football. Second, they shouldn't run after or fight with each other. Third, they should bring back their football. Joe likes playing football a lot, and he wants to play football with his friend Jeff. He doesn't listen to the teacher's words. He doesn't know the importance (重要性) of the rules before one of his legs gets hurt (受伤).

Joe and Jeff come to the playground to play football. The football runs so quickly. Both Joe and Jeff run after the ball. Then the ball stops. But Joe runs too quickly. He can't stop immediately (立即). Finally, Joe falls over and one of his legs gets hurt!

Jeff is very afraid. He asks Mr. Zhang for help. Mr. Zhang sends Joe to the hospital soon. At last, Joe is sorry and says, "We need to follow the rules. Getting hurt is very awful."
