Chinese calligraphy is an important part of traditional Chinese culture. Calligraphy started in China and spread to other parts of Asia with Chinese culture. It has a history of 4,000 to 5,000 years. Calligraphy is the art of writing Chinese characters(汉字) and rules of writing with a brush. When you practice calligraphy, it is important to pay attention to the changes of the strokes(笔画) and the spaces between characters. 

There are many famous calligraphers in history, such as Wang Xizhi and Yan Zhenqing. Different calligraphy works can show different calligraphers' feelings and personalities. Today, they can be seen on the walls of offices, shops, hotels and many other places. 

"If I live in China, I will become a calligrapher rather than a painter for sure," the world-famous master of art, Picasso said. He fell in love with Chinese calligraphy as soon as he saw Zhang Daqian's works. 

The tool for practicing calligraphy is calligraphy brushes. They are usually made from the hair of different animals. Practicing calligraphy takes a lot of time and many people take lessons to learn it. During the lessons, they can learn how to write different strokes of Chinese characters. If you're interested in it, you may start practicing with a teacher right away. 

Calligraphy, an amazing traditional art form, shows the love that all Chinese people have for culture and beauty. Chinese people of all ages practice calligraphy often, not to be a calligrapher, but to enjoy the peaceful mind.

Over the past twenty years, China has become stronger and stronger. Many foreigners want to do business with Chinese people now. Learning our language helps them a lot. The Confucius Institute provides a place  them to learn Chinese language and culture. 

As the world is crazy about China, more and more foreigners are  in our language and culture. To meet their needs, the first Confucius Institute was  up in South Korea in 2004. Now the Confucius Institute is all around the world. There are  than 1,000 classrooms in 140 countries and areas, with over 2 million students. People all over the world want to study Chinese.  it's not easy to study the language. The foreigners who like Chinese practise it so hard. They learn  to pronounce and write, even use chopsticks. 

A big competition is held for foreigners. By taking part in  competition they can show themselves. When we watch the show, we are amazed at their Chinese and admire very much. Some foreigners not only speak Chinese well, but also a lot about Chinese culture. 

The Confucius Institute does a good  in spreading Chinese language and culture to the world. Today, the world is learning Chinese.

In a new study researchers found a fact. Whether it's sports practice, the music lesson or the usual catch-up with friends, when children are doing after-school activities, they may feel happier and healthier than those who always look at a screen. 

What's more, children's happiness improves when they join in after-school activities, while things are completely ____ when they spend time on social media or playing video games. 

The researchers studied 61,759 school students from Grade 4 to 9. They worked out how many days every week children joined in after-school activities from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Then they compared the number to well-being factors(幸福的因素) like satisfaction, sadness and worry. 

Lead researcher Dr. Rosa Virgara said the research showed how some out-of-school activities could improve children's happiness, while others, especially screens, could be bad for their mental and physical health. "Screens are a big distraction(分散注意力的事物) for children of all ages. Whether children are playing games, watching TV or using social media, there is something about all the screens that hurts their happiness," she said. 

The study also showed that even children who were already happy also benefited from joining in after-school activities. "This shows that there is a big need to find ways to encourage children of all ages and backgrounds to join in activities that keep them away from TVs, computers and smart phones," Dr. Rosa Virgara said.

I have learned four languages—English, Spanish, French and Chinese. Although I wasn't great at 1 when I was a kid, I 2 by traveling to places like Beijing, Dali and Kunming.

Archaeology(考古学) is a magical gateway to the past.1 just a few pieces of material, archaeologists can unlock the secrets of the past. The Sanxingdui Ruins site is home to one of 2 archaeological discoveries of the 20th century. It3 by accident in 1929.

36.29-year-old Yang Xu has taken up a new hobby: seal carving(篆刻) , and has been taking classes at a local night school. "I used  (spend) my free time staring at my smartphone,"Yang said. "Now, I spend one and a half  (hour) at the seal cutting class every day, finding achievement and peace in it."

Night classes were very popular in the 1980s, when many young Chinese people were learning new skills to make  living. Today, these classes are becoming popular again  young people, though they now serve the purpose of enriching cultural needs.

The night art school Yang attends  (set) up by the local government in 2016. For the people  are interested, the school provides twelve 90-minute classes at a cost of 500 yuan. On average, the price for each hour of class is  (near) the same as a bubble tea.

Before the night school was opened, young people had trouble finding classes in traditional art. Today, the night school provides all these classes at a reasonable price, taught by (celebrate) teachers and artists.

For many young people, night classes are an escape from the busy city life. "The stress in city (create) a lot of worries," Yang said. "People need a place to rest  (they) minds, and night art classes can be that one."

Why are good eating habits important? Your body is like a super-strong, super-speedy machine, and the food you eat is what keeps you going.  Eating the right food helps your body run smoothly and stay strong.

How can you start eating better? Firstly, eat all kinds of foods.  Don't be too picky. Next, have three meals a day. You are supposed to have each meal on time. Lastly, drink water. As a garden needs watering, your body needs water too.

On November 26, 2025, a terrible fire broke out in Wang Fuk Yuen, Tai Po, Hong Kong, which shocked the whole city. The fire started from the scaffolding (脚手架) on the outer wall of a building in Wang Fuk Yuen at about 2:51 pm. Within just a few hours, it escalated to a Level 5 fire, the second-highest alarm level in Hong Kong.

Strong winds made the fire spread quickly to seven nearby buildings. The old scaffolding and green construction nets on the buildings acted like fuel, making the flames burn more fiercely. The high temperature at the scene was a big challenge for firefighters. Some residents were trapped (困于) on the upper floors, and rescuers couldn't reach them immediately due to the extreme heat. However, the rescue team kept in touch with the trapped people by phone to calm them down.

More than 700 firefighters and rescue workers were sent to the scene, along with 128 fire engines and 57 ambulances. Sadly, up to now, the fire has caused 13 deaths and 28 injuries, including a 37-year-old firefighter who lost his life while fighting the blaze (火灾). The Hong Kong Fire Services Department even changed its official website to black and white to mourn (悼念) the fallen hero.

The Hong Kong government took quick action. It opened temporary shelters (避难所) for the affected residents, and social workers and psychologists were sent to offer emotional support. Schools near the fire site were closed on November 27 to ensure students' safety. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but the incident reminds people of the importance of fire safety, especially in old communities under construction.

Do you know who was described as "superhuman" by the great inventor and astronomer Galileo? It was Archimedes who solved the king's problem of the golden crown while taking a bath. He was perhaps one of the most outstanding scientists in the world. He was a mathematician, physicist, engineer, weapon designer and inventor. He was wise in philosophy, active in mathematics and physics. He was also recognized as one of the finest engineers of his time. He was born on the island of Sicily in the city of Syracuse around the year 287 BC and died in 212 BC．

Archimedes showed great love for mathematics. He made many discoveries. For example, he determined the approximate value of pi. He invented and developed methods similar to calculus (微积分) and used them to find the area of a circle and an accurate estimation (估计值) of the value of pi.

Today, he is regarded as one of the greatest mathematicians in history. Archimedes used his mathematical skills and talents to create useful inventions. One of his most famous inventions is called the Archimedes' Screw. It was a device that could lift water to higher levels. One of its first uses was to pump water out of a leaking ship. It is still used today in some places to move water from low places to high places. This invention influenced Leonardo da Vinci as he worked on developing the functioning flying machine.

Can you imagine counting the sand in the universe? Archimedes once tried to calculate the number of sand grains in the universe. Obviously, it was impossible, but it goes to show that he was too smart. His intellectual curiosity and achievements in mathematics, in general, would go on to encourage other mathematicians as well. Most of his achievements were by far ahead of his time. Archimedes was indeed a genius.

Every summer, thousands of swamp sparrows (沼泽麻雀) sing songs in North America's wetlands. These special brown birds only know a few songs, but they sing them very well. In fact, their song list hasn't changed much for hundreds of years.

Like humans, baby swamp sparrows learn songs from their elders. "Swamp sparrows just make a few mistakes when they learn their songs," says Robert Lachlan. Actually, they copy the music so well that it stays the same from the elders to the young.

"Just like children, the sparrows don't remember every song they hear," Lachlan says. "They just pick up the songs they hear most often. It is an example of what scientists call ‘conformist bias'." Until recently, this learning ability was thought to be special only to humans.

Between 2008 and 2009, Lachlan's team recorded the songs of 615 swamp sparrows. The study found that only 2% of these sparrows sang a different song. "The song-types that you hear in the wetland of North America today may have been there 1,000 years ago," says Lachlan.

However, another team found that a few sparrows had changed their song list in recent years. Now scientists are exploring the influence of losing habitat (栖息地). Cities, roads, and farms can separate a bird population into a number of different groups. It stops birds from sharing their songs with each other.

My New Year Resolutions

The start of every New Year is the perfect time for making plans to change our life for the better.     

A famous teacher says, "January 1 is a special date. It is much more helpful for us to make a resolution on January 1 than on January 26." So we all make a list of things to stop, start or change.

However, most of the people break their resolutions by January 31. They are usually the same resolutions from last year and even earlier. The teacher says people would like to make the same resolutions year after year, even though they find it hard to achieve them.

There is a survey about making resolutions. 500 people take part here. The survey shows 45% of people make a New Year's resolution. The most common resolutions are losing weight, saving money, and getting fit.

According to the survey, only 70% of people keep their resolution for about two weeks. Six months later, less than 50% still keep their resolutions. Many people don't have strong minds so they give up their resolutions.

But that's okay. The best resolution is to never stop trying. Even small steps, like drinking more water or smiling often, can make a difference.
