Reading is always a wonderful time. Good books are good friends.They also open up a whole new world to me.

A young woman spends her time helping people know more about saving Yangtze's "smiling angels". The Yangtze River is home to the endangered Yangtze finless porpoises（长江江豚）. We know them as the "smiling angels" because of their special mouths. 

However, there is little for the animal to smile about. There are only around 1,000 of the porpoises left. The government, scientists and volunteers are working hard to save them. Tan Ge is one of them.

Tan Ge was born in 1991. She grew up in Hunan's Yueyang, a city beside Dongting Lake. The lake is linked to（连接）the Yangtze River. After learning about this important animal and the importance of protecting the animal, she joined a group of volunteers and started working to protect them.

As she worked with the volunteers, Tan Ge learned more about the animal. And she knew that perhaps a lot of people, like herself, had little knowledge of the animal. So, in 2018, she joined the association（协会）to save the animal.

Since then, she has tried her best to work for the animal. She has joined in over 350 field trips to fight against bad fishing. She saved not only finless porpoises, but also other wild species（物种）in the area.

Benten Mountain（弁天山）is in Tokushima, Japan. It is the shortest  (nature) mountain in Japan with a  (high) of just 6.1 meters. It is in the middle of fertile paddy（稻田）fields along Tokushima's Road Ten. It takes a person just one minute  (reach) the top and yet over 10,000 people come here every year for this special purpose. For some people, it's  (simple) relaxing to climb a 6.1-meter-high mountain, while others come to enjoy both the trees the flowers.

Benten Mountain is open to  (tourist) on June 1st, when a "First Climb of the New Year" event is organized here by the local government.  this day, visitors who reach the 6.1-meter-high mountain are given the Proof of Scaling Certificate as a prize. Every year, this Japan's shortest mountain  (hold) different events, like cherry blossom festivals and wedding ceremonies.

In fact, Benten Mountain is also the  (safe) mountain in Japan, with no accidents or missing person reports ever recorded here. By comparison （比较起来）,  highest mountain in Japan, Mount Fuji, is 3,776 meters high.

Do you know about China's smallest mountain? It is in Shouguang, Shandong Province. There you will find Jingshan, the1 mountain in China, and probably in the whole world. This mountain is about 1.24 meters long and just about 0.7 meters wide. It is only 0.6 meters2 above the ground. With a small 3 , people can reach the top of the mountain. Is it interesting? It may not be the most famous mountain in China,4 it's the only mountain in Shouguang. It's a 5 of the city and one of the most popular places of interest.

How deep is Jingshan embedded（使嵌入）in the ground? We'll probably never know, because the government now 6 anyone from digging（挖）around it. In fact, in the 1950s, some people tried to dig around it to prove（证明）that it wasn't a mountain, but only a 7 . They dug for a long time, but they didn't 8 the bottom. And then people regarded it as the smallest mountain in China.

As soon as the photos of Jingshan went9 on the Internet, all kinds of opinions appeared online. Some said that they would like to visit the cute mountain by 10 . Some even joked that during the summer, the tall crops（庄稼）would make it impossible to find the mountain.

When we talk about an object, we might say it's round, square, or soft. But when we describe the face of the earth, we use the word "landform（地貌）". 

There are many different kinds of landforms, including big mountains, soft hills and flat lands.  Each landform has its own uniqueness（独特性）.

The force of nature formed the landform. This force could be wind, water, ice and so on. And it usually takes a very long time to form it. For example, you may see many plains. The plain used to be a plateau or a high hill, but as time passed, water and wind turned the plateau or the high hill into a plain.

Another beautiful landform formed by water is a delta（三角洲）. And there are hills and mountains. A hill is raised land, while a mountain is usually higher with a top. Most mountains are like towers. They look very wonderful.

 Understanding them plays an important role in keeping the homes where countless lives form.

 "If you need to send messages or e-mails or do something on your phone, do it now," the tour guide said over the loudspeaker. Everyone laughed and took out the phones. Minutes later, the train reached the snowy mountain area, and our phones lost a signal （信号）. 

The next morning, as the sun rose over the land, I woke up on the train and went into the sightseeing（观光）area. A guide drank his morning coffee and called out over the loudspeaker, "There's a huge bird! And see those horses!"

Soon the train passed by a large lake and went deep through the mountains. The mountain walls were so close. I stood up many times to get a closer look. I was so excited that I wished I could open the window and reach out to feel those snowy stones! 

By evening, when we reached the plains（平原）, the guide asked cheerfully, "If anyone has a guitar, bring it to the sightseeing area and let's have a party!" A passenger took a harmonica（口琴）out of her pocket and began to play, and someone else brought a guitar to join her. The joyful music mixed with people's talks. "You know, the happy time makes me love this world again," said the man sitting next to me. It turned out that you didn't need a mobile signal to make a connection.

People often think of the North Pole（北极）and the South Pole as similar frozen（冰冻的）wastelands. They are both places with very cold temperatures and few people live there. However, the North Pole and the South Pole are not as similar as people may imagine. 

The North Pole has no land, only thick ice. Temperatures seldom go above 0℃. Most of the time, it stays below zero. 

Although conditions were very poor, people tried for many centuries to reach the North Pole. About 100 years ago, two men, Robert Peary and Matthew Henson, were able to get to this environment full of troubles and difficulties. They reached the North Pole on April 6th, 1909. It was really a hard trip for them. 

There are few things more dangerous than crossing the Arctic（北极圈）on foot. They may face many problems: very cold temperatures, sudden storms, and even hunger. Most of the area is uninhabited. Few people can live in such a difficult place.

People might think that with such low temperatures for most of the year, the ice would be thick and hard. However, this is not true in the Arctic. The movement of the ocean water under the ice may often cause many different changes on the surface. Sometimes the ice breaks into two opening lanes of water（水道）called "leads". Anyone who falls into a lead can be frozen to death in a few minutes. 

①Do you know what the world's highest waterfall is? You may say that it is Niagara Falls. Niagara Falls is very beautiful. But in terms of （就……而言）height, the most fantastic fall in the world is Angel Falls. It is deep in the jungles（丛林）of Venezuela（委内瑞拉）.

②Few people have ever seen Angel Falls. It's very hard to get there. If you go by land, you have to travel for weeks through thick jungles. If you go by plane from Caracas, a city on the southern coast, it will take about four hours.

③The fascinating falls are wonders of nature. One of the most interesting facts about Angel Falls is how people found it. Its name comes from an American pilot. His name was Jimmie Angel. In 1937, he crashed（坠落）his plane near the top of the falls. That's how he found it.

④Angel Falls falls from a table-top mountain with a height of nearly a kilometer. The water seems to be dropping straight out of the clouds. The height of the falls is so great that by the time the water reaches the ground, it has already turned into fog.

⑤If you have a chance to visit it, you'll never forget it!
