Hi Peter,
I learned something amazing today. It's about solving a real-life problem!

Let me share it with you.
The problem:
Wang Ming, a 9th-grade student, goes to school(point B) from his house(point A). On his way to school, he walks quickly to the food street for his breakfast. Look at the map of his neighborhood, in order not to be late for school, which breakfast house(point P) should he choose along the street(AP +PB) to shorten his total walking distance?
Actually, this is called Heron's Shortest Path(路径) Problem, named after a Greek math expert who studied light reflection 2,000 years ago! He discovered light always takes the shortest path when reflecting off a mirror. For Wang Ming's problem, the street acts like a"mirror".
How it works:
① Mirror Trick: Imagine reflecting point A across the street to create a"mirror image"A'. Now, A' is on the opposite side of the street, exactly as far from the street as A.
②The Straight Line between two points is the Shortest Path! Connect A' and B. Where this line crosses the street is the best point P!
Why it works:
— By reflecting A to A', the distance AP+PB becomes A'P+PB(since AP=A'P).
— The straight line A'B is the smallest possible total distance.
Cool, Right?
It's amazing how math expert from ancient Greece solves a real problem in life! His idea is even used today in GPS systems and building design.
Now, let's look back at Wang Ming's problem. If both Wang Ming's house (point A) and the school (point B) are 2km away from the street. And it's 3km from Wang's house to the school. What's the shortest path of AP + PB?
Let me know your answer! I'm looking forward to your reply!
Yours,
Li Hua

AI technology has been rapidly developing and it is now used in different fields. This progress adds a lot of convenience to people's daily lives, making them better.
a
In hospitals, AI is now changing how patients get care. Doctors and researchers use AI to study medical data(数据) and images, which helps in finding out sicknesses more correctly. AI smart tricks can predict patient health results and suggest personal treatment plans, improving the quality of healthcare.
b
AI technology has a big influence on education these days. Smart study helper systems offer students personalized learning experiences. These systems look at how students progress and change the learning materials to match their study speed and style. This helps students understand hard knowledge and improve their school performance.
c
Mount Tai has more than 7,000 steps, which is hard for climbers, especially older people. AI-powered exoskeletons(外骨骼机器人) (1.8kg)fit around the waist and legs, making climbing easier by supporting their bodies. Moreover, the exoskeletons have a long-lasting battery system that allows for over 5 hours of walking, with a single charge supporting a distance of around 14 kilometers.
This technology is not only useful for climbers, but also convenient for daily use of the old.
d
Government work benefits from AI technology. AIsystems now offer better services to the public. Over70 AI workers in Shenzhen deal with 240 tasks, creating texts in minutes(95% correct) and dealing with police records at once. Chat robots in Beijing,Datong, and Zhangzhou can help answer public questions, cutting down the work of human and speeding up reply time. By 2029, 80% of government work may be done by AI, letting humans focus on creative jobs while keeping personal information safe.

You may visit a new place, but it feels like you've been there before. That's déjà vu. But there may be a(n)1 situation: You look at your best friend's face and suddenly feel he's a stranger, even though you "know" it's him. This moment is called jamais vu, which means "never seen" in French.
Why does jamais vu happen? Jamais vu isn't about your 2 but like a "mistake" in your brain's system. It's a moment when your 3 fails to connect what you "know" with what you "feel". For example, while writing, you might stare at a simple word like "apple" and doubt if it's 4 correctly, even though you've written it thousands of times. Memory isn't just about knowing facts—it's your brain trying to make sense of the world. When your brain can't 5 what you know with what you feel, familiar things can feel strange.
Jamais vu may seem strange, but it's 6 . Many people have experienced that! Memory isn't a camera— it's more like a 7 , mixing facts and guesses. Mistakes like déjà vu or jamais vu aren't weaknesses but 8 messages from your brain. People don't talk about jamais vu much, but studying these moments could help to discover mysteries about memory disorders. 9 we learn why the brain sometimes sees the familiar as strange, we might find ways to repair it. Next time you 10 jamais vu, don't worry—admire how your brain works!

19、完成图表。根据短文内容,完成图表中所缺信息。
Do you ever wonder why trees begin to bud (发芽), flower earlier in some cities? Scientists finally found the answer but it's not very pleasant. New science suggests a relationship between light pollution and the timing when trees produce buds, which shows the arrival of the spring season.
Light pollution is defined by the Lighting Research Center as the harmful effect of outdoor lighting such as streetlights. Too much light at night destroys natural cycles and makes it hard to see stars and planets. It harms the environment more than we realize.
By studying some trees, researchers found out that trees lit by man-made lights at night start to bud about7.5 days earlier than trees in natural darkness. And they found out that light had a more important effect than temperature when the buds came out. The early budding may cause problems for insects, which feed on leaves, and the birds which then feed on them in turn. Professor Richard French Constant, who helped lead the research, explained that more than the budding of trees, the study implies the danger to the balance of nature. "At the moment, caterpillars(毛毛虫) are born at just the right time to eat the new leaves that trees grow, and birds are born at the right time to eat these young caterpillars. But, when man-made lights make trees grow leaves earlier, it can mess up this natural timing and cause problems for both the caterpillars and the birds," he said.
We need to do more research on how light pollution affects nature. If the problem was left to continue, it is believed that by 2100, spring would begin almost a full month earlier than it does today.

Too much man-made lights cause trees to grow leaves .
Because of the reason, the of nature is broken.

Why Can't People Stop Touching Museum Exhibits (展品)?
When visiting the British Museum, you can see visitors touch ancient bowls even though the museum rules say no touching is allowed. Museum guards say it's impossible to stop people from breaking the no-touch rule.
Most museum-going is still a mainly visual(视觉的) experience for visitors to admire the artworks. But over the past few years, more and more museums have been working to include additional senses, like sounds and smells. But touch, especially, is only allowed in certain areas, like the Louvre'sTouch Gallery, or the British Museum's Hands On Desks.
Before there were museums, there were curiosity rooms filled with a collection of interesting objects from around the world. When people visited the collection, the objects were passed around. Museums continued with this spirit of openness at first.
But as museums grew, the spirit no longer existed. When you' ve got 4 million visitors a year, you can hardly have everybody touching something. Sometimes people are likely to damage the artworks. So the rule against touching artworks makes great sense. Smaller museums still sometimes encourage visitors to touch their objects.
Why are we so unwilling to keep our hands to ourselves? Some people just want to make sure the artworks are real. But there' s a larger truth. Visitors say that they want to feel how deep an engraving(雕刻) goes, so as to better understand the artistic skills, in this way, touching is part of trying to somehow make contact with the past.
A. It helps to show respect for the ancient artists.
B. You stop 100 people touching and there are 200 more.
C. Visitors learn more about objects from reading signs around.
D. You can't really learn more about objects unless you touch them.
E. But the bigger ones prefer to advertise themselves as no touching.
F. Museums have come a long way since the time of the curiosity room.
