Many students ask for advice about how to improve their English. Here are three basic questions.

The Yi's New Year is a popular festival for the Yi ethnic group（彝族）in Sichuan, Yunnan, Guizhou and Guangxi. It  （fall）on a day around November 20 every year. There are many traditional practices（习俗）of the festival.

When the festival draws near, the Yi people will start house cleaning. They think that cleaning can help them get rid of bad things in the house and bring good. （luck）to them. They also put firewood（木柴）in front of  （they）houses. They believe that the height of the firewood shows the hard work they have （do）in the past year and is also a symbol of a happy life in the new year.

First, it's important to check your BMI（身体质量指数）. For adults（成年人）, a healthy BMI is between 18.5 and 24. If your BMI is between 24 and 28, you are overweight. 28 or above means obesity.

Both eating well and exercise are important. Choose healthy foods like brown rice, fresh vegetables, fish, chicken and beans. Stay away from fried and sugary treats（甜食）, and also eat less salt and oil. Surprisingly, local favorites like Northeast China's stewed fish（炖鱼）and Northwest China's chili-oil noodles （油泼面）are part of the healthy eating list.

For exercise, try to do 150—300 minutes of activities like walking or dancing weekly, and do strength training twice a week. For example, if you study for long, stand up and exercise for 3—5 minutes every hour. Shanghai schools now make sure students exercise for at least two hours daily.

Small daily habits can also make a big difference. Teens（青少年）should get eight hours' sleep every night because bad sleep can make you increase weight. Try to eat vegetables first, then meat, and finally rice or bread during a meal to control how much you eat. In short, small changes like choosing water instead of cola or taking stairs can lead to a healthier you.

Lan Huiyun is a geography teacher from Shuozhou, Shanxi Province. After his students finished the gaokao of 2024, he and 13 of his students experienced a special journey. He and his students finally reached Qinghai Lake in Qinghai Province after riding about 2,000 kilometres in 18 days.

They set off from their school. And before arriving in Qinghai, they passed through Shanxi, Inner Mongolia, Ningxia and Gansu.

In early May 2024, Lan began to plan this journey. In order to make sure of the students' safety, Lan helped them do some training in riding. However, they also faced many difficulties on the journey. "When I noticed the students were tired or felt down, I would give them some snacks or tell them a joke to encourage them to move forward," he said. "Luckily, all of us persisted (坚持) and finally reached Qinghai Lake."

In fact, it was not the first time that Lan had organized such a journey for his students after the gaokao. In 2016, he and his 7 students rode from Shuozhou to Manzhouli. And in 2019, he and his 11 students spent 16 days riding from Shuozhou to Shanghai.

Through the trips, Lan hopes the students will experience real life and learn how to deal with difficulties. "I have never thought that a teacher should only teach through books," he said, "I'd like to bring more students to ride in the future."

Experts (专家) at the University of Edinburgh studied the relationship between music and remembering a foreign language. They found that remembering words in singing was the best way to remember even one of the most difficult languages.

The experts got the result by doing an experiment. They invited 60 people and divided them into three groups of 20. Then they asked the three groups of people to study words from the Hungarian (匈牙利的) language. Why Hungarian, you ask? The experts said they chose Hungarian because not many people knew the language.

All three groups studied the Hungarian language for 15 minutes. The scientists asked them to learn in three different ways. They asked the first group to simply speak the words. They let the second group speak the words to a rhythm (节奏). And they asked the third group to sing the words. Then the three groups of people joined in a few language tests to see what they remembered. The group of people who learned the Hungarian words by singing them did better than the others. They did the best in four out of five of the tests. They also did two times better than those who simply learned the words by speaking them.

Dr Katie Overy was one of the experts who did the experiment. She thought the findings could help those who try to learn foreign languages. "The brain seems to like music, especially for remembering," she said.

Have you ever heard of Huang Xuhua, the main designer of China's first nuclear submarines (核潜艇)?  Because of his great achievements, he was given the Medal of the Republic, China's highest honor in 2019.

Huang Xuhua graduated from Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 1949.  At that time, his team didn't have computers or technology. They couldn't get any help from other experts, either.  They had to search information from magazines and newspapers. After studying the information carefully, they came up with their own plans. After years of hard work, they built China's first nuclear submarine successfully in 1970.

Work Songs

Work songs are also called "haoxi". People sing them when they are in heavy work, like moving big rocks or pulling boats by the river. Work songs can always light up the spirits of working people.
