In China, the horse is more than just an animal. Horses  (be) important friends to Chinese people for thousands of years. They helped farmers work in the fields and soldiers fight in wars, making them very  (value). 

Chinese people created many idioms (习语) about horses and used them to tell short stories or give advice. 

"A horse that covers a thousand miles" is perhaps  most famous horse idiom. It describes someone great talent. Chinese parents often use it to encourage their children to work hard and hold on to their dreams. 

"Success arrives with the horse" is a popular blessing (祝福) which means "I hope you can succeed immediately. " People say it to friends when they start new projects or take important  (test). 

"A fast horse needs a good rider" teaches us a lesson.  talented people ("fast horses") might be common, good leaders who can notice and value talent ("good riders") are hard to find. This saying reminds  (we) that having talent isn't enough—you need someone who believes in you and gives you chances. 

In Chinese art, horses often appear in paintings and sculptures (雕塑). The famous painter Xu Beihong was especially good at painting horses. His horses look so real that they seem  (jump) off the paper!

Today, horses are still special in China. The year of the horse in the Chinese zodiac (生肖)  (consider) lucky. People born in horse years are believed to be energetic, friendly, and hardworking—just like the fantastic horses that have influenced Chinese culture  (great) for centuries. 

All of us know the Chinese character "家". It means home and family in Chinese.

In the Chinese character "家", "宀" means "house" and "豕" means "pig".  Well, "家" comes from Jiaguwen. In old times, people liked to keep pigs at home, so "a house with pigs" means "home". 

 Look at the two. "There's no place like home. " "East or west, home is best. " Both of them tell us home is the best place for everyone. 

Xu Li is a 13-year-old girl from Beijing. She says, "When I'm not happy, I always go home and talk with my parents or my sister.  Home is a place full of love. I always feel happy at home. " Wang Jun is a 28-year-old man from Hunan. The best thing for him is to go back home to see his family. Home is where people's roots are. "I think it's so warm and comfortable to be home, " he says. 

Last weekend, my class had a special trip to the Henan Opera Theatre. We all felt excited because it was the first time for us to watch a live opera show. 

Our guide was Ms. Wang, a kind Yu Opera performer (演员) with 20 years of experience. She first took us to visit the costume (服装) room. There were all kinds of bright and beautiful costumes and masks. "Each mask has a special meaning, " Ms. Wang said. "Red means honesty (忠诚), while white means cruelty (残酷). " Then, we watched a short show of The Story of White Snake. The performers sang in a sweet voice and moved gracefully (优雅地) on the stage. We were interested and fell in love with the show. 

After the show, we even got a chance to learn simple opera movements (动作) from Ms. Wang. My classmate Lili tried on a red costume and a hero's mask. She looked so cool that we all laughed happily. Before we left, Ms. Wang told us that Yu Opera has a history of more than 300 years, and it was an important part of Chinese traditional culture. 

On our way back to school, everyone was talking about the trip. "I didn't know Yu Opera was so interesting, " my friend Tom said. I had the same idea. This trip not only gave us a great time, but also made us love our traditional culture more. 

What's your favourite poem?

For some people, it's a short, funny limerick (五行打油诗). For others, it might be a famous love sonnet (十四行诗) written by William Shakespeare. Some poems describe the beauty of nature, and some discuss questions about family. There are long epic (史诗) poems that tell of heroes and monsters. On the other hand, there are Chinese jueju (绝句), which have just four lines. When it comes to poetry, there is something for everybody. Some people say reading a poem is better than diving into a normal story. What do you think?

Yes—poems are fun to learn and recite (背诵)

The great thing about poems is that they come in all shapes and sizes. Short poems are perfect for when you don't have much time—certainly not enough time to read a whole book. With a few words, poetry can be beautiful, thoughtful and influential. Poems are great because you can memorize them and share them with your friends; it's harder to do that with a story. Poems can be song lyrics (歌词) too—you could learn one by heart and recite it on the way to school. A book of poems gives you lots of themes all in one place, offering you much more than just one story. 

No—you can get lost in a story for days. 

It's because poems are mostly so short that they are not as good as stories. It's much more enjoyable to curl (蜷缩) up with a good book, to keep coming back to it, chapter after chapter, rather than read a poem that you might have forgotten by tomorrow. It's more enjoyable to really get to know the characters of a story and go on a journey with them. Besides, poems can be quite hard to understand, especially old ones that were written centuries ago. Novels usually have more information about characters and settings (背景), which means you get to step into a whole new world and escape from reality. You also find out what happens in the end, while with some poems you are left wondering what they really mean. 

①China is a nation of etiquette (礼仪). Chinese people are among the most hospitable (好客的) people in the world. If foreigners visit a Chinese family, they would be surprised at the warmth that they would receive as guests. 

②When you visit a Chinese family, the host usually makes tea for you. Then he will serve you snacks like biscuits or candy. Someone in the family will also chat with you, never letting you feel lonely. 

③At the same time, other family members will prepare a meal for you. Chinese people treat their guests to a big meal. They always present more food than the guests can eat. And the guests must be the first to eat. Perhaps one of the things that surprise Western guests most is that the Chinese host likes to pick up food for visitors, which won't happen at Western tables. The Chinese family go out of their way to make you feel at home. As you finish eating, the host usually says, "It seems that you didn't eat much. Please have more. " Although you tell them you are full, they still put more food in your bowl.

Did you join any club at school? When my friend suggested that we join the new tai chi club, I thought he was 1 . I always believed tai chi was for old people. 2 , after the first class, I realized that I was wrong. It was amazing. Tai chi led to a big 3 both in my body and mind.

The Art of War(《孙子兵法》) is a book written over 2, 500 years ago by Sun Tzu, a Chinese strategist (战略家). Living during the Spring and Autumn Period, Sun had a good knowledge of war strategies. The book's 13 chapters (篇章) cover different parts of war. Surprisingly, its lessons can help solve everyday problems! They teach skills. Here are three of them. 

"Winning comes to those who know when to act and when to walk away, " Sun Tzu wrote. This means choosing fights wisely. For example, if a classmate says something unkind, staying cool might be better than shouting. Not every small argument needs a big fight. 

Leadership isn't just about giving orders—it's about thinking smartly and making good plans. "Work on your weak points, not your strong ones, " Sun Tzu said. Imagine studying for a hard test: spend more time on your weakest subject first. He also said, "Understand yourself and your competitor, and you can fight a hundred battles (战役) with no danger of losing. " Know your strengths and weaknesses to make better plans for schoolwork. 

"Change like water, " Sun Tzu taught. If your soccer team's plan isn't working, try new ways! Life doesn't always go as you expect. Being able to change helps you catch good chances. Change like water, and you'll grow! 

This ancient book is still popular to this day around the world, whether in wars, politics, business, sports or relationships. Next time when you face a challenge, ask what Sun Tzu would do. His ancient advice might just help you succeed!

Little Womenwas a famous novel by Louisa May Alcott. The novel follows the lives of the four March sisters—Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy during the American Civil War (1861-1865). 

The main theme in the story is the  of family. Other themes include the need to work and self-improvement. 

At the  of the story, the sisters are complaining because they are poor and have to work. Their mother says that they mustn't spend money on pleasure (娱乐)  there is a war and everybody must help. Their father is in the army. In the letters their father sends home, he tells his daughters to work hard and not to waste  time. They must try to accept the bad things in their lives and stay cheerful. He wants to be  of them when he comes home. The girls decide to work hard to improve themselves because they  love and miss their father very much. 

Alcott explored four different ways of being a woman in those days. Meg leaves the family to get and have a new family. Beth devotes (奉献) herself to taking good  of her own family. Amy focuses on herself and her own pleasure. And Jo, like Alcott herself, tries her  to be a good writer and care for her family at the same time. 

Journey to the Centre of the Earth is one of Jules Verne's most well-known works. In this famous science-fiction novel, Harry, his uncle, and their travelling companion Hans undertake a subterranean (地下的) journey beneath the Earth's s . After reading the book, it's easy to see why the novel is a classic. 

Setting is one of the most important elements of any science-fiction novel, and Verne helps the reader visit this imaginary world within-our-world. W it's a huge cave filled with unusual formations or a mysterious passage, Verne's vivid descriptions are easy to visualize. He c a world that is both familiar (熟悉的) and strangely unfamiliar. His word c make the new place seem cold and slightly threatening. 

Verne also includes details that help the reader understand and relate to the m characters. Harry is the first-person narrator who describes the events from his own point of view. Through his actions, c , and descriptions, it is easy to see that he feels concerned and wary (谨慎的) in this new environment. By contrast, Harry's uncle is delighted (高兴的) by their unusual circumstances and t he estimates (估计) that they are far below the Earth's surface, he does not perceive any danger during their navigation of the unfamiliar terrain (地形). By showing these details, Verne s in giving the reader clues about each character's traits and motivations. 

While the characters' journey is fantastical fiction, it reminded me of the f time I visited a big city. I was awed by the towering buildings and the constant roar of traffic. Like Harry, I felt like I was standing on an unfamiliar shore. I was fascinated and terrified. That's the b of Verne's work—he captures both of those feelings perfectly.
