Kites were once called zhiyuan in North China and yaozi in South China.The name fengzheng came into use during the Five Dynasties.  He once tied a whistle (哨子) made of bamboo to the upper part of his kite so that a zheng sound was made when he was flying the kite. The word for wind is feng, so fengzheng came into use.

How was the kite invented (发明)?  But it is widely believed that the earliest kite in the world was made by Mo Di, a famous Chinese philosopher (哲学家) who lived about 2,400 years ago. He spent three years making a bird with wood and successfully flew it. The bird was later regarded (被视为) as the first kite in the world.  Lu Ban improved (改进) on kite-making. He made a kite out of bamboo and it flew into the air for as long as three days.

Kite-flying became a kind of recreation (娱乐活动) in the Tang Dynasty.  Later, the paper-made kite was invented. Paper-made kites were cheaper to make and then spread quickly among the common (普通) people.

 The well-known British scientist, Dr Needham, once described kites as an important invention that spread to Europe from China in his book.

When visitors in the Palace Museum need to sit down for a cup of tea or find a bathroom without a long line, they will be able to turn to their smartphones for the information they need.

Thanks to an agreement signed by the museum and Huawei, a "smart network" will be built by using 5G technology. Under the agreement, 5G Wi-Fi signals will cover the Palace Museum.

"It's important to use the latest technology to better serve the public," said Shan Jixiang, former director of the Palace Museum. "There is still much room for improvement in dealing with cultural relics (文物). I remember that when Along the River During the Qingming Festival was exhibited (展览) in 2015, some visitors waited in the lines for nearly a whole day to have a look. I don't want that scenario to happen again," Shan said, "Our work can be done in a more scientific way."

In the new system, more than 1.86 million of cameras are set up all over the Palace Museum to safeguard the museum's precious relics. "How can we make sure no single visitor who might have bad ideas threatens these treasures?" Shan said, "After using 5G technology, we can immediately notice movement about the relics to prevent such threats."

The 5G network will also be used to improve remote (远程的) meetings through webcams, in which scholars will discuss together to find the best answers for repair and store issues.

Can you imagine a butterfly with a human face? Or a Chinese dragon with a fish tail? Such creative and interesting ideas appear in Miao embroidery (刺绣) from Guizhou. Miao embroidery is an important part of Miao culture and a treasure of traditional Chinese clothing culture. It was included in the national intangible cultural heritage list (非物质文化遗产名录) on May 20, 2006. It is considered one of the finest examples of embroidery art.

Miao embroidery has a long history of more than 2,000 years. Miao people embroider different patterns on clothes, such as dragons, fish, flowers and birds. These designs aren't just for beauty. What's more, many of them play a role in recording their history and culture. This is because Miao people do not have their own written language. Therefore, Miao embroidery is often known as "the Miao history worn on the body". It is said that a Miao leader named Lanjuan came up with this idea.

The main materials of Miao embroidery are silk, cotton and horsehair. ▲ These natural materials make clothes more comfortable to wear. However, these materials are difficult to keep. Therefore, it is hard for people to see Miao embroidery products with a history of more than 200 years today.

Now we can find elements (元素) of Miao embroidery in modern clothes, shoes, bags, hats and so on. Besides, there are many cultural and original products about Miao embroidery. Miao embroidery is becoming more and more popular at home and abroad.

On Sept 7, famous Chinese archaeologist (考古学家) Fan Jinshi, 85, was awarded by UNESCO for her contribution to the protection of the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang.   Called the "daughter of Dunhuang", her story with the caves started 60 years ago. In 1963, Fan, then a 25-year-old Peking University graduate, had the chance to work at the Mogao Caves, a place which she had wanted to explore for a long time. 

"Seeing Dunhuang for the first time was breathtaking. But only when truly staying here did I realize that inside the caves is a world of divine (神圣) beauty while outside is a land of blowing sand and yellow earth." Fan told Gansu Daily. 

Back in those days, the Mogao Caves were almost completely cut off from the world. Fan and her co-workers had to live in mud houses and drink salty water. They stayed inside the caves to do research, copy murals, and do whatever they could to protect and restore them. 

In 2011, after 40 years of hard work, a report on 10 Mogao Caves compiled (编写) by Fan's team was finally published. It was known as China's first professional report on cave archaeology, reported Gansu Daily. 

As time passed, Fan found a serious problem. The increasing number of tourists visiting Dunhuang might harm the caves, causing the murals inside to fade. A solution needed to be found to preserve Dunhuang's heritage . 

In the late 1980s, Fan came across computer technology by chance. She realized that this might preserve the Mogao Caves forever. After over 30 years of exploration, the Dunhuang Academy built a digital database to protect cultural relics (文物) there, allowing Dunhuang's art to live forever and to step out of the caves to meet the world. 

 "In my whole life, I've only done one thing: protect and promote the world cultural heritage of the Mogao Caves," she told People's Daily. "My heart belongs to Dunhuang."

Traditional arts are an important part of our cultural heritage. They carry the wisdom of our ancestors and show the1 beauty of Chinese culture. Mr Li is a craftsperson who has2 his life to paper-cutting.​

Mr Li was born in a small village where paper-cutting was very popular. When he was a child, he often watched his grandma make paper-cuts. The beautiful patterns3 him deeply, so he asked his grandma to teach him. At first, it was not easy—paper-cutting 4 great patience and skill, and the paper was torn easily, making him fail many times. But he never gave up. He practised every day and finally 5 the skills.​

After many years of hard work, Mr Li became a famous paper-cut artist. His works are known for their bright colours and vivid patterns. He can turn a single piece of paper into different characters. Many of his works have been shown in exhibitions at home and abroad. Once, one of his6 won a special prize in a national competition.​

Now, Mr Li is over 60 years old. He still keeps making paper-cuts every day. He also teaches children in his village to learn paper-cutting, hoping to help them understand how to 7 this traditional craft. He hopes that this traditional craft will be loved by more young people. "Paper-cutting is our cultural heritage. It will disappear if we don't protect it," he said.​

The cartoon series Boonie Bearsis popular with people of all ages in China. Logger Vick, a logger, came to the beautiful Heilongjiang forest to cut down logs with Boss Li's trust. But in the forest hid two terrible rivals (对手)—the forest owners, bear brothers! Briar and Bramble! 

Looking at the forest that was destroyed, bear brothers decided to fight against Logger Vick to protect the forest. Briar is so clever that he can beat Logger Vick easily. Bramble is not as clever as his brother but sometimes can also defeat Logger Vick with his brute force (蛮力). But the cunning (狡猾的) logger cannot leave so easily. The home defense lasted for a long time and Logger Vick tried various ways to defeat bear brothers and cut down logs, but he failed every time. Finally Logger Vick lost Boss Li's trust and gained nothing. The saying goes that doing good will be repaid and doing evil will be punished.

Chinese animation has a rich history. It started from ancient arts like shadow puppet plays, which are considered the  (forerunner) of moving images. In a shadow puppet play, puppeteers stand behind a white screen  the audience sits in front. They use light to make the puppets' shadows  (appear) on the screen. This art form has greatly  (influence) modern animation. 

In 1941, the first Chinese feature-length animated film, Princess Iron Fan,  (create). It was a huge success. Later, Chinese animators made other classic films  Havoc in Heaven, which combined painting techniques with Beijing opera sounds. Today,  the help of AI and 3D technology, animators are creating new stories. They protect traditions  adding modern elements. This  (make) sure that traditional culture can be passed down and  (enjoy) by young people today. 

Ne Zha came out on July 26th, 2019 and broke box office records, becoming one of the  popular cartoon films in China. Many Chinese internet users love the film, and  it "the light of homemade cartoon". 

This film comes from a traditional  novel called Fengshen Yanyi. The film tells the story of Ne Zha,  naughty boy who dreams of becoming a hero. But people in his town are afraid of him  he is bad in his past life. However, Ne Zha doesn't mind it. He faces difficulties and his dark fate (命运)  to fight the bad people. Finally he  a great hero. 

Many people fall in love with this film. "After  so many homemade cartoon films, only Ne Zha always makes me moved. We can trust him forever," a Weibo user said. "Ne Zha is brave. And he always says that nobody can decide who you are  yourself. " We shouldn't let others hold  fates. It teaches us to keep on our dreams and hold fates in hands.

The famous cartoon piglet（小猪）, "Mcdull"（麦兜）is like that.  He's not very clever, but he has a heart of gold.
