Can you imagine what an ancient giant (巨大的) snake looks like? The ancient giant snake in India may have been than a school bus and weighed a ton, researchers reported on Thursday.
Fossils(化石) were found near a coal mine in the western state of Gujarat. Researchers said it was about 1 1 meters to 15 meters long. It is comparable to the largest snake at about 13 meters that once lived in what is now Colombia. The largest snake is in Asia at10 meters.
The newly discovered snake lived 47 years ago in western India's swampy (沼泽的)evergreen forests. It could have weighed up to 1, 000 kilograms. The researchers gave it the name Vasuki indicus.
The ancient snake was too big for quick attacks. Considering large size, Vasuki moved very slowly. In hunting for food, the snake would wrap(用······包裹) its body around a target in a crushing hold.
Parts of the snake's backbone were in 2005. The researchers compared more than 20 fossil backbones to skeletons(骨架) of living snakes to estimate its size.
it is not clear exactly what Vasuki ate, other fossils found nearby suggest the snake lived in the areas together with catfish, turtles, crocodiles and early whales. These animals may have served food for Vasuki.
Snakes are cold-blooded animals. They would require higher temperatures into large sizes. So does that mean that global warming could bring back huge snakes? In theory, it is possible. But the climate is now warming too for snakes to evolve(逐步发展) to be giants.

"It was just normal to me because I often 3 a lot of things that I probably shouldn't, " said the boy. Rowan took the piece home and researched how to tell whether it was real gold. Think of the experience of opening a Russian doll to find a smaller one inside, and then another and another. 2. And just when you think you've found the smallest doll, there's another even smaller one hidden inside!
Russian dolls were first created by a group of artists outside Moscow in 1890. They grew popular in the 20th century after being shown at the world's fair in Paris in 1900.
Although the styles have changed over time, the dolls— usually one large doll with seven more inside— tend to be all female.
3. But some say the inspiration for these dolls actually came from East Asia. In Japan, there were already wooden nesting dolls, with one big doll and the six other small dolls inside. It's been said that the wife of the patron(赞助人) of those Moscow artists visited Japan. 4. 她带回了其中一个玩具娃娃。This became the inspiration for the Russian doll. But others say there is no evidence(证据) for this link, and the Russian artists may have been inspired by wooden Easter eggs, or by something else altogether.
Either way, the history of these objects goes back much further than 1890.
People in China made nesting boxes that were hidden inside each other— just like the dolls— more than 1, 000 years ago. It's believed the first nesting dolls were made in China some time in the 18th century. 5. 这就是这个想法如何传入日本的。

The Silk Road is neither an actual road nor a single route. The term instead refers to a network of routes used by traders for more than1, 500 years, which went from China to Eastern Europe. The Silk Road went along the northern borders of China, through India, and Persia and ended up in Eastern Europe near today's Türkiye and the Mediterranean Sea.
It was called the Silk Road because one of the major traded products was silk cloth from China. Besides silk, the Chinese also exported tea, salt, sugar, porcelain, and spices. Most of what was traded was expensive luxury goods. This was because it was a long trip and merchants didn't have a lot of room for goods. They imported, or bought, goods like cotton, ivory, wool, gold, and silver.
Merchants traveled in large caravans (车队). They would have many guards with them. Traveling in this way____helped in defending from bandits (土匪). Camels were popular animals for transport because much of the route was through dry and harsh land.
*Although there had been some trade between China and the rest of the world for some time, the silk trade was significantly expanded (发展) by the Han Dynasty. Later, under the rule of the Yuan Dynasty, set up by Kublai Khan of the Mongols, trade from China along the Silk Road would reach its peak. During this time the Mongols controlled a significant portion(部分) of the trade route, enabling Chinese merchants to travel safely.
The Silk Road was important because it helped to generate trade between a number of different kingdoms and empires. This helped for ideas, culture, inventions, and unique products to spread across much of the settled world.
The Silk Road was over 4, 000 miles long. There wasn't just one route, but many routes. Some were shorter, but more dangerous. Others took longer, but were safer.
