Every summer, children from different places drown (溺水) in the river or lake.

Last month, we heard a piece of bad news again. It happened on the afternoon of June 15th. Two brothers from a primary school in Yueyang, Hunan drowned in a river. They lived in a small village nearby. They didn't tell their parents and went to play on the riverside. Suddenly, the 6-year-old boy fell into the river. He couldn't swim. So his 10-year-old brother jumped into the river to save him. Unluckily, both of them died.

As students, how can we be safe if we want to swim in hot summer? First, we had better swim in the swimming pool. Second, if we really want to swim in the river, we must go with our parents and wear life jackets.

Remember: life is the most important.

My neighborhood is a new neighborhood, and there are of big houses. There aren't many cars so it is very quiet. My school is not from my house. I can walk there in 10 minutes. My parents don't have to their car to take me there.

The scientist was Niels Finsen from Denmark (丹麦). He saw a sick cat sleeping in the sun. When the sun moved, the cat moved, too. Why did the cat love the sun so much? To find out the answer, Niels kept watching the cat for days. Amazingly, the cat got better after lots of sunbathing. The sunlight could cure diseases! Then, Niels invented a light to cure human diseases and won the Nobel Prize in 1903.

In fact, many great scientific findings start from "stupid" questions and small things in life.

Scientists may ask: How many lies does a person tell in a day? How many licks (舔) does it take to eat up a lollipop? Why do roses smell good? What can we learn from animal poop (粪便)? And they take it seriously. They watch, think, and do experiments (实验) until they find an answer.

If you have to describe yourself to someone else, what will you say? It can be difficult to see yourself from the outside, but being self-aware (有自我认知) can help you understand feelings and make friendships closer.

Self-awareness means having a good understanding of our own character (特点). If you're self-aware, you may know that you love playing an instrument because you do well in it, and music makes you happy, or that you like watching TV on your own because it helps you relax.

Knowing what you like and dislike, what you are good or bad at helps you make better decisions about friendships and schoolwork. Being self-aware doesn't mean only thinking of yourself. Because by understanding your own feelings, you will better understand other people.

How do you learn to be self-aware? It is a good way to ask questions. Ask questions that start with "what" instead of (代替) "why". For example, if you don't understand why you keep arguing with a friend, ask yourself what you disagree on instead of why you're arguing.

Learning to be more self-aware is a skill (技巧). You learn it as you grow. So try out new things, like playing a new sport or listening to different kinds of music. Don't be afraid to dislike something—finding out what you don't like is also a key part of learning more about yourself.

I don't know why people become bullies. Maybe they think that bullying (霸凌) makes them look strong. Maybe they think bullying makes them popular. I think some bullies might be jealous of the people they bully. They feel unhappy or angry because someone has something that they want. Or, maybe they just feel bad about themselves and want other people to feel bad too. Whatever the reasons, bullying is wrong.

Everyone needs to work together to let bullies know that we won't allow (允许) bullying in our school. We won't ignore (忽视) bullying. If we let bullies continue hurting others, then we are just as bad as them. We all need to let bullies-know that they have to stop. We need to tell them we don't like it. We must help people who are being bullied.

Let's say "No" to bullying. Our school is a NO BULLYING school!

Mary, who is now 98, started volunteering (志愿服务) at the hospital after her husband died almost 20 years ago.

"My husband was a patient (病人) here," she said. "Everyone at the hospital was so good to us."

To show her thanks, Mary wanted to give back in a big way. "I don't have lots of money, but I can give them my time."

"Once I gave three days a week," she said. "Now, I'm old, so I don't get around as much as before. I only give one day a week."

To get to the hospital, Mary gets a ride from a man who she now calls her friend, "Every Tuesday, Richard picks me up from my home and brings me here," she said, "I don't think people at my age should be driving."

Mary has volunteered about 7,000 hours at the hospital and it makes her feel great. She hopes to give patients more hours and smiles.
