Seeing the Spirit of Horses

2026 is the Year of the Horse. The pictures of horses can be seen here and there. Let's learn about some famous horses in history.

Wuzhui (乌骓)

Wuzhui was the horse of Xiang Yu, a warlord (将领) from the late Qin Dynasty (221—206BC). The horse was mostly black but its feet were as white as snow. Wuzhui was famous for its strength. It stayed with Xiang Yu for five years, and they won many fights together. In the stories, Xiang Yu killed himself near the Wujiang River. The horse followed him and jumped into the river too.

Dilu (的卢)

Dilu was the horse of Liu Bei, the founder of the Shu Kingdom (蜀国) in the Three Kingdoms period (220—280). Dilu could run very fast, but sometimes it didn't listen to its owner. So people thought it could be dangerous. But in the stories, the horse saved Liu's life by jumping across the Tanxi River. It was about 10 meters wide!

Chitu (赤兔)

Chitu was the horse of Lyu Bu, a warlord from the Three Kingdoms period. "Tu" refers to "菟". That means a tiger in Chinese culture. The name shows how brave the horse was. Lyu was a strong man. With Chitu, he became even stronger. There is an old saying, "Lyu Bu was among the best warriors and Chitu — his horse — was the best of battle horses (人中吕布，马中赤兔)."

Horses are our great friends. In the past, these famous horses helped us in fights and made history. Now horses are still important in our lives. And they stand for courage and loyalty in Chinese culture.

In the great outdoors, there are some sounds of nature. Have you ever try listening to them? The quacking of ducks, the croaking  of frogs and a calling of birds can create pictures in our minds. 

Don't you think they can true touch our hearts? Many of us might  not live near these animals, but them sounds stay in our memories. 

The sounds of nature are everywhere if we take the time listening. 

They are not just made of animals or birds. Some people may like  to hear the wind blowing through tree. Others may enjoy the sound  of a stream run over rocks. 

Listening to nature are great for us. It helps our minds relax and  can slow down our heart rate. To fully enjoy the sounds of nature, why not go outside, sit in silent and listen carefully? By doing so, we  can enjoy the beautiful music of nature.

Imagine wearing a virtual reality (VR) headset (虚拟现实头显) and seeing a delicious ice cream in front of you. What if you could "taste" it without taking a bite? You can't feel the coldness in your mouth, but you can taste its sweetness thanks to a tasting device (设备).

Scientists created a new device known as the e-Taste. It could make the VR experience even more real. To use the device, the user need to wear it in the mouth. The device has five different chemicals (化学物质) inside. It can mix these chemicals to recreate the tastes of different food or drinks. Then the device sends the taste directly to the user's tongue.

To test their device, the scientists let users wear it. Then users "tasted" different food and drinks with the device. After that, there was a list of possible names for them to choose from. The choices were cake, coffee, fish soup, fried egg, and lemonade. Users easily guessed the tastes of cake and lemonade. However, they had a harder time telling the difference between the rest.

While the device still needs improvement, it makes virtual food experiences possible. It could also help people without a sense of taste. More importantly, the device could give scientists new ideas and help them learn about how the brain understands information from the mouth.

In a small village, there lived a famous old carpenter (木匠). People travelled from far and wide to buy his furniture.

One day, a young man came to learn from him. The young man loved working with wood but was always hurrying to finish things. After a few days of learning from the carpenter, the young man thought, "I can make furniture faster."

The old carpenter noticed this and said, "I can teach you to make furniture quickly, but first, you need to do a simple job." He then passed the young man a rough board and said, "Make this board smooth."

The man thought it was easy. He sanded (用砂纸打磨) the board a few times and soon gave it back confidently. The old carpenter felt the board and said, "It is not smooth enough. Try again."

A little impatient, the young man sanded harder. But the old carpenter shook his head once again.

Feeling sad, the young man started to think more. He wasn't in a hurry any more and sanded every part of the board carefully. Finally, the board was as smooth as a mirror. He was so pleased with his work.

This time, the old carpenter smiled and said, "You have learned an important lesson. Success needs not only skill but also patience. The simpler the job is, the more patience we need. When you perfect every part, you can make a perfect piece."

The young man understood that carpentry was not only about making things but also about shaping the mind. Life is like this — a successful person moves forward step by step.

Once there was a writer who lived close to the sea. Every morning, he walked along the beach to get ideas for his writing.

One sunny morning, as he was walking near the edge of the water, he looked along the beach and in the distance (远处) he saw a little girl near the water. She was bending down (弯腰) and then standing up. He wasn't sure what she was doing. So he decided to go closer to find out.

When he got near to the little girl, he saw that on the beach there were lots of starfish, and the little girl was picking them up, one at a time, and      ▲       .

The writer went closer to the girl and asked her what she was doing. The girl stopped and looked up at the writer — she seemed surprised. Then she said she was throwing the starfish back into the sea. She said, "The sun is up, and the tide (潮) is going out. If I don't throw the starfish back into the water, they will die."

Now it was the writer who was surprised. He wanted to persuade her that she was wasting her time. He said, "But look, there are hundreds of starfish here. You can't possibly pick them all up and throw them back. It's meaningless. Can't you see that you can't possibly make a difference here?"

The girl smiled, bent down and picked up another starfish, and as she threw it back into the sea, she answered, "If I hadn't throw it back, it would have died. I think I made a difference to that one."

Graduation is an important moment for students and their family. It's usually a time of great1 for parents as they watch their children being awarded (授予) a university degree.

For my book review, I'm going to talk about The Adventure of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain. The classical novelthe US, in the nineteenth century. It tells some exciting stories about a boy called Tom Sawyer who has many adventures.

Tom is a lively and clever boy. He doesn't like people telling him what to do, so he always . He and his best friend, Huck Finn, run away to an island the Mississippi River. Later, he has more trouble because a bad man named Injun Joe  him. At last, Tom escapes from a cave with another friend, Becky. He also finds Injun Joe's treasure box and takes it away.

The Adventure of Tom Sawyer is one of . It tells us how young people grow, how people love each other and how bad people pay for their actions. If you love adventure stories, it will be a good choice.

To most people, a handmade book is only paper and thread. But for Anastasia, a young girl from Russia, every page has a special story she wants to tell the world.

Anastasia studies in St. Petersburg. Before she came to China, she read lots of Chinese folk stories online.She was very happy when she knew she would come to China for a cultural exchange. She spent much time prepar-ing for the trip to learn about traditional Chinese culture.

In China, Anastasia and her classmates stayed for a month to learn from local artists. They learned the story of"double happiness(双喜)" and the twelve zodiac animals(十二生肖). They also visited old gardens and experi-enced the life of ancient Chinese people. Everything was new and interesting for them.

The story of the twelve zodiac animals attracted Anastasia most. She said Russia also had animal signs, so theChinese zodiac made her feel warm. But the story about the rat was new to her,  so she decided to write this story in her book.

With the help of Mr. Xu Jinlin,  a Chinese teacher,  the  students made their own handmade books. One ofAnastasia's classmates, Natalia,  drew many beautiful pavilions(亭)  and bridges from Chinese gardens. And her friend Natasha made special pages for Chinese Xiehouyu—— two-part sayings with hidden meanings.

From this special journey, Anastasia and her classmates found that people from different cultures could under-stand each other through sharing stories.

Anastasia looks on her book as a great treasure. She will take it back to Russia and share Chinese stories with her family and friends. She hopes more people can learn about traditional Chinese culture from her book.

In many ways, artificial intelligence(AI) makes our lives easier. Among various AI tools, chatbots like ChatGPT stǎnδ-out—— thơ-can unđorstand what we say and find information quickly. This human-like quality is increasingly attracting people, some of whom are even starting to treat AI as friends.

According to a news report, a growing number of people are turning to AI as friends, especially among teenag-ers. Thev ask AI for help with questions that they would usually talk about with their real friends. These AI tools oathave different traits(特征) and personalities. Many teenagers think talking with AI is as good as or better than talking with real friends."AI is always available. It never gets tired of me, and it never judges(评判) me," said an 18-year-old teen Kayla."When I talk to it, I always feel relaxed."

In the central square of Zengchong Village in Guizhou stands a special wooden tower lhe Zengchong DrumTower. Built in 1672, it is one of the oldest Dong drum towers in China. It shows the great building skills.(theDong people and is a key national cultural relic(文物).

The tower is 25 meters high with 13 layers of roofs. It is made only of wood in a special way. The wood is perfectly without any nails(钉子). Four large thick wooden pillars(柱子) inside form a strong center, and eight more outside form a ring. They connect tightly, making the tower very stable. The roofs are painted with colourful pictures of dragons, fish and other animals.

The tower is more than a beautiful building. On the first floor, there is a fire pit(火坑). People sit around it to keep warm, chat and have big meals. In the past, villagers held important meetings here. It is also a place for showing respect to their ancestors. High in the tower hangs a big drum. In the old days, people used different drum-beats to send messages.

This special structure is a folk building for the Dong people, serving as a place for discussing affairs in the communi-ty, welcoming guests, singing grand songs, and holding other important events. It is not only a living treasure of theDong people's building skills, but also one of the oldest existing drum towers in Dong villages all over China.

Today, the Zengchong Drum Tower is well protected. It stands for the wisdom and spirit of the Dong people. It is a living cultural treasure for us to value and protect.

The Time eating Monster

Have you ever noticed a monster(怪兽) around us? It's not big or scary, but it's very dangerous. This monster comes in many forms-games, social media and TV shows. You may ask," It brings us so much fun. But why do you say it's a monster?"

For example. we may all think."I' ll just have a little fun." At first, we turn on the computer and start a game. but soon the monster comes. Then it starts to eat away our time, minute by minute. Finally, we just sit there and look at the screen without noticing it at all.

Ve often get lost in the monster's world like this. We become couch potatoes (电视迷)with sore necks and dry eyes. We miss sweet moments with loved ones. We are deaf to the real world.

Just remember, too much fun also makes Jack a dull boy! The time-eating monster will always be there. But we can keep it away by having fun in a proper way.
