Ever felt stuck on a math problem, only to solve it after a walk? That's your brain taking a "break" and science says it's more important than you think.
When we focus hard, our brains use a lot of energy. After 45-60 minutes, they start to feel tired, making it harder to concentrate. Taking short breaks, called "mental rests", lets them recharge. But not all breaks are equal: scrolling through phones doesn't count. Why? Because screens keep your brain active, flooding it with new information and stopping it from relaxing.
So what works? Moving your body: a quick jog, stretching, or even just walking around the classroom. Nature helps too — studies show looking at trees or grass for 5 minutes boosts focus by 15%. Another good choice? Daydreaming. Letting your mind wander can spark (激发) creativity, like when a writer gets ideas for a story while staring out the window.
Timing matters too. Experts suggest the "5-5 rule": work for 50 minutes, then rest for 5. Next time you're stuck, try this: set a timer for 5 minutes, step outside, and listen to birds. You might be surprised how much clearer your brain feels when you get back to work—ready to tackle that problem with fresh energy.

① to increase or improve something.
② to make someone feel happier or more confident.
③ to push someone up with your hands.
④ to make a loud noise.
A、① B、② C、③ D、④(4)、What can we infer from the "50-5 rule" in Paragraph 4?A、Students should rest for 5 minutes every hour. B、The longer the break, the better the brain works. C、Working non-stop can lead to bad study results. D、We must set a timer to solve math problems quickly. -

Cities are growing, and green spaces are shrinking. But a new idea — "vertical forests" — is changing this. These are buildings covered with thousands of plants, turning concrete towers into living ecosystems.
The first vertical forest opened in Milan, Italy, in 2014. It has two towers, with over 900 trees and 20,000 smaller plants like bushes and flowers. The plants aren't just for beauty. They absorb carbon dioxide (CO2), the gas that warms the planet, and release oxygen. They also block sunlight, keeping the buildings cool in summer and reducing the need for air conditioning.
But how do the plants survive (存活)? Special systems water them through pipes hidden in the walls. The trees are chosen for their size, so they won't grow too tall and damage the building. Roots are contained in strong pots to prevent them from breaking windows or walls.
Critics say vertical forests are expensive to build and maintain. However, supporters argue the benefits are worth it. In addition to fighting pollution, the forests attract birds and insects, bringing nature back to busy cities. "They show that humans and nature can live together in harmony," says architect Stefano Boeri, who designed the Milan towers.
(1)、What is a "vertical forest"?A、A tower made entirely of concrete. B、A large park in the middle of a city. C、A building covered with many plants. D、A forest where trees grow extremely tall.(2)、What is one benefit of vertical forests mentioned?A、They make buildings look older and more traditional. B、They reduce the need for air conditioning in summer. C、They allow plants to grow much taller than normal. D、They provide free food from fruit trees for people.(3)、What is the main idea of Paragraph 3?A、Why the roots are safe. B、How tall the trees can grow. C、Where the plants are placed. D、How plants live in vertical forests.(4)、What do supporters of vertical forests believe?A、They cost much but bring more good. B、Only large cities can benefit from them. C、They will replace all traditional buildings soon. D、Humans and nature can live together peacefully. -

Noah had never paid attention to the stray cats in his neighborhood. He often walked past them without a second look, focusing only on his own life — schoolwork, video games, and hanging out with friends. He thought caring for small animals was something kind people did, not something he needed to bother with.
One rainy evening, he found a tiny cat trembling under his window. It was weak and could not even stand up. Noah hesitated for a moment, then took it inside quietly. He dried it with a towel, fed it warm milk, and made a soft bed for it. That night, he stayed up late worrying about the cat.
As days passed, the cat got better and closer to Noah. It followed him around the house and curled up on his desk when he studied. For the first time, Noah felt a strong sense of responsibility. He started learning about how to look after stray animals, preparing food and clean water for them every day. He even put up posters to help other stray cats find homes.
His parents were surprised to see his change. "You used to be a boy who only cared about himself," his mom said. "Now you're kind and responsible." Noah smiled. He realized that kindness was not a difficult thing. It started with small actions, and it could warm both others' hearts and his own.
From then on, Noah became a person who noticed and helped the helpless around him. He learned that the greatest happiness in life comes from giving, not receiving.
(1)、What can we infer from Paragraph 1?A、Noah was self-centered before. B、Noah disliked all small animals. C、Noah lived a busy and hard life. D、Noah had no close friends at school.(2)、What was Noah's feeling when he first took the cat home?A、Angry but patient. B、Uncertain but kind. C、Confident and excited. D、Frightened and nervous.(3)、What made Noah start to change?A、Parents' encouragement. B、Looking after the stray cat. C、Making friends with others. D、Learning from kind people.(4)、What is the main idea of the passage?A、Keeping pets is a good way to relax. B、Small acts of kindness can change a person. Twenty years ago, when Andrew Westbrook was in college, he had a hard time putting his mind on class. He certainly had the ability to focus (集中注意力). For example, when he got lost in a good book, thinking felt easy. But when it came to some other mental (脑力的) tasks, thinking was like pulling teeth and his attention was off.
Westbrook is now a scientist. His research is challenging old ideas about why we can't keep our attention on certain tasks.
For years, scientists thought that mentally tiring tasks like solving math problems required more energy than easier ones like looking out of the window. As a result, these harder tasks would make us run out of energy and lose focus more quickly.
However, Westbrook's research suggests our brain is always working hard. Even when we are just looking around a room, our brain is working on lots of information and using lots of energy. But we don't find these tasks tiring. The real problem is that difficult tasks require different brain areas to work each other in new ways. The brain has to break out of its usual ways, which causes discomfort and makes these tasks seem harder than they really are.
"Thinking about beginning a hard task feels harder than actually doing it," Westbrook says. This early mental difficulty can lead us to put off the task or even avoid trying. "If we can get over it, thinking will become easier," he adds.
Westbrook's team has found ways to help us do that. For one, he suggests focusing on the good results of completing the task instead of how hard it will be. We can also try to get into "flow". When people are in "flow", they seem not to care how hard the task is. One key to entering "flow" is to reduce something that we are not sure. Before writing a book report, for example, you can set yourself a goal, like finishing it in 15 minutes. Finally, it can help to make these mentally tiring tasks into a habit. Try doing them at the same time and place every day. After a few weeks, focusing on these tasks won't just feel easier — it will be easier.
(1)、How does the writer lead in the topic?A、By giving an example. B、By showing advice. C、By asking questions. D、By listing numbers.(2)、What can we learn from Paragraph 3?A、Easy tasks need no attention at all. B、All mental tasks cost the same energy. C、Looking out is hard for people's brain. D、People lose focus because they're tired.(3)、What does the underlined word "it" in Paragraph 5 refer to?A、An old idea. B、The mental difficulty. C、The hard task. D、A good beginning.(4)、What is the purpose of the text?A、To explain why we lose focus and how to get better. B、To show how difficult the mental tasks usually are. C、To tell people the importance of developing good habits. D、To introduce a great scientist called Andrew Westbrook. -

For most people, graduation is an exciting day, but my graduation day was not.
I remember that weekend two years ago. Family and friends had flown in from across the country to watch the celebration. But just like everyone else in my class, I had watched the economy (经济) turn from bad to worse in my fourth year of university. Almost all of us school-leavers had degrees, but very uncertain future.
The weeks ahead weren't easy. I knew my small university town couldn't offer me any chances, so I packed up my things and drove to Southern California to find work. But what I thought would take a week lasted for two weeks, and then four, and after getting refused from 100 jobs, I found myself in the same situation as I was in before.
You know that feeling when you wake up in fear? That feeling became constant (持续不断的) in my life. ▲ And the worst part was no matter how much I tried, I just couldn't seem to make any progress.
So what did I do to keep my good sense? I decided to write. Something about putting words on a page made everything seem a little clearer—a little more shining. Something about writing gave me hope. And if you want something badly enough, sometimes a little hope is all you need!
I put my unhappiness into a children's book. Beyond the River is the story of an unlikely hero, a little fish, who refused to give up his dream. And then one day, without any sort of writing degree or connections in the writing world—just a lot of hard work and push—I was offered a publishing deal for my first book! After that, things slowly began to fall into place. I was offered a second book deal. Then, a few months later, I had an interview with the Walt Disney Company and got the job shortly after.
Don't give up. Even if things don't seem smooth now, don't give up. If you work hard, things will always get better. Most of the time, our dreams are not far away—They're just waiting for us. All we need is the courage to push beyond the river.
(1)、Why did the writer go to Southern California?A、Because she wanted to publish her books. B、Because her family and friends lived there. C、Because she didn't like studying at university. D、Because her university town had no chances.(2)、Which sentence can be put into " ▲ " in Paragraph 4?A、Time moved quickly and I was busy with my schoolwork. B、Friends came around and we spent happy time every day. C、My family encouraged me to stand up and offered me much useful advice. D、Days felt like weeks, weeks like months, and those months felt like endless pain.(3)、Which is the right order of the following?① I got a job at Disney Company.
② I was refused from 100 jobs.
③ I wrote and put out my first book.
④ I took part in my university graduation.
A、②→③→④→① B、②→④→①→③ C、④→②→③→① D、④→③→②→①(4)、What can we learn from the story?A、Writing is a good way to make money easily. B、Try to hold on to our dreams and never give up. C、Family support is important in our difficult time. D、Young people should keep away from difficult situations.
