The ink brush is a traditional tool for writing and painting in ancient China. It's also one of the "Four Treasures of the Chinese Study".

 They start a job, love it straight away and stick at it. But it isn't always like that. So you are allowed to change your mind. Maybe your first job doesn't turn to be proper for you. Maybe the right job for you is just around the corner!

Generally, people get more fun out of their jobs if they feel they are doing something valuable for others. It doesn't have to be an unpaid task. It could be a job that helps people around you. Just don't forget that a good job isn't only about money.

Twenty years ago, when Andrew Westbrook was in college, he had a hard time putting his mind on class. He certainly had the ability to focus (集中注意力). For example, when he got lost in a good book, thinking felt easy. But when it came to some other mental (脑力的) tasks, thinking was like pulling teeth and his attention was off.

Westbrook is now a scientist. His research is challenging old ideas about why we can't keep our attention on certain tasks.

For years, scientists thought that mentally tiring tasks like solving math problems required more energy than easier ones like looking out of the window. As a result, these harder tasks would make us run out of energy and lose focus more quickly.

However, Westbrook's research suggests our brain is always working hard. Even when we are just looking around a room, our brain is working on lots of information and using lots of energy. But we don't find these tasks tiring. The real problem is that difficult tasks require different brain areas to work each other in new ways. The brain has to break out of its usual ways, which causes discomfort and makes these tasks seem harder than they really are.

"Thinking about beginning a hard task feels harder than actually doing it," Westbrook says. This early mental difficulty can lead us to put off the task or even avoid trying. "If we can get over it, thinking will become easier," he adds.

Westbrook's team has found ways to help us do that. For one, he suggests focusing on the good results of completing the task instead of how hard it will be. We can also try to get into "flow". When people are in "flow", they seem not to care how hard the task is. One key to entering "flow" is to reduce something that we are not sure. Before writing a book report, for example, you can set yourself a goal, like finishing it in 15 minutes. Finally, it can help to make these mentally tiring tasks into a habit. Try doing them at the same time and place every day. After a few weeks, focusing on these tasks won't just feel easier — it will be easier.

For most people, graduation is an exciting day, but my graduation day was not.

I remember that weekend two years ago. Family and friends had flown in from across the country to watch the celebration. But just like everyone else in my class, I had watched the economy (经济) turn from bad to worse in my fourth year of university. Almost all of us school-leavers had degrees, but very uncertain future.

The weeks ahead weren't easy. I knew my small university town couldn't offer me any chances, so I packed up my things and drove to Southern California to find work. But what I thought would take a week lasted for two weeks, and then four, and after getting refused from 100 jobs, I found myself in the same situation as I was in before.

You know that feeling when you wake up in fear? That feeling became constant (持续不断的) in my life.    ▲         And the worst part was no matter how much I tried, I just couldn't seem to make any progress.

So what did I do to keep my good sense? I decided to write. Something about putting words on a page made everything seem a little clearer—a little more shining. Something about writing gave me hope. And if you want something badly enough, sometimes a little hope is all you need!

I put my unhappiness into a children's book. Beyond the River is the story of an unlikely hero, a little fish, who refused to give up his dream. And then one day, without any sort of writing degree or connections in the writing world—just a lot of hard work and push—I was offered a publishing deal for my first book! After that, things slowly began to fall into place. I was offered a second book deal. Then, a few months later, I had an interview with the Walt Disney Company and got the job shortly after.

Don't give up. Even if things don't seem smooth now, don't give up. If you work hard, things will always get better. Most of the time, our dreams are not far away—They're just waiting for us. All we need is the courage to push beyond the river.
