On a Monday morning in Amsterdam, the work day began as usual for Jim. When finishing his coffee, Jim checked text messages on his phone. Then, he got his bag and went to the nearest railway station. He wasn't there to take the train, though. Instead, Jim chose one of the public bicycles lined up outside the station. After unlocking a bike with a smart card, he set out for his job on the other side of the city. He joined other cyclists in the bike lanes (道), safely separated from car traffic.

Amsterdam wasn't always bicycle friendly. In fact, cycling used to be dangerous, especially during the second half of the twentieth century. This was a time of rapid growth in Amsterdam. As people got richer, they were able to afford expensive goods such as cars. For the first time, driving became popular. Highways were built for cars. This meant there was less space for cyclists. Having had a long tradition of cycling, this was a big change for the city. As car traffic increased, so did the number of biking accidents. Many of the cyclists were children.

People in Amsterdam were angry. They organized protests (抗议) in the city streets. Government officers listened. Hoping to solve the problem quickly, they started to think of ways to make the city safe for cyclists again. Soon there were separate bike lanes, and some areas were closed to cars forever. The changes were so effective (有效的) that today Amsterdam is a model of biking safety for other cities around the world.

A cold front (冷锋) is moving towards the north of the country. It may cause snowfall in that area tomorrow. In the evening, the wind might get stronger. There's a strong chance that the snow will continue for a few days, so it's time to get out your thick coats and gloves!

Another cold front is moving south-west across the country. It should arrive on the west coast during the day tomorrow. If this happens, we might see some cold winds and rain reaching the western and southern parts late tomorrow afternoon. The rain may last till Sunday.

On the east coast, we could see a slight rise in temperature tomorrow, from today's high of 16℃ to as high as 18℃. But don't get too excited! I'm afraid the mild weather won't last very long. The cold weather may get to the east part on Sunday or next Monday.

Every Small Step Counts!

Summer vacation can be whatever you make of it, so make each day memorable by pursuing your interests. Here are some useful suggestions for you to enjoy summer vacation.

Staying Organized

Make your summer goals, noting which are the most important for you to get done. If you are going on vacation, celebrating a friend's birthday, or doing anything else important during the summer, mark it on a calendar so that you can be prepared for each event.

Getting Active

Go running and make sure that you avoid the hottest part of the day. Try running either before the sun comes up or after the sun goes down to stay comfortable. Take a hike, but remember to go with another person, and bring a phone or map in case you get lost. You should also bring along a bottle of water.

Making Time for Friends

Find a recipe in a cookbook or online, and cook something with friends. It always results in a great memory. Exploring is necessary, too. If you are traveling to another country or city, go to many different places. If you are staying in your city or town, try to approach your own neighborhood as if you were a tourist.

Relaxing Alone

Catch up on your reading during the summer. You can check out free books from your local library, and renew them if you need more time to read. Also, you can learn a new skill by taking courses online or taking a weekly class, such as learning a new language, taking a dance class, or mastering a musical instrument.

Long ago in ancient China, there was a young man named Xue Tan who loved singing. He became a student of Qin Qing, a great  known for his magical voice. After practicing for a few months, Xue Tan became . "I've learned everything!" he told his teacher. "I'm ready to leave and sing alone!"

Instead of getting angry, Qin Qing smiled and held a goodbye party for him on a quiet hillside. As the sun set, Qin Qing began to sing. His  started softly, like a gentle breeze (微风). Then it grew louder and stronger, shaking the trees around them. The clouds in the pink evening sky seemed to freeze in place. Birds  flying to listen, and even the wind went silent.

Xue Tan's face turned  with shame. He realized his teacher's singing was like a roaring ocean,  his own voice was just a tiny stream (溪流). He fell to his knees and cried, "I was wrong to think I knew everything! Please let me keep learning  you."

Qin Qing kindly helped  up. "True skill isn't about showing off," he said. "It's about listening-to the world, to your heart, and to those who came before you."

From that day on, Xue Tan decided to  hard. He imitated (模仿) the rhythm of rainstorms and learned melodies from bird songs. Years later, when people praised his talent, he always said, "I'm still just Qin Qing's ."

Wang Xue is a 22-year-old student from a university in Beijing. Now she works as a volunteer Chinese teacher at a high school in Yunnan Province.

At first, Wang was worried about her teaching methods because her students didn't do well in class. However, Wang didn't give up when she faced the challenges. She tried new ways like encouraging students through praise and making them work in groups. Eight months later, their hard work paid off and they made great progress.

In addition to daily teaching, Wang often organized after-school activities to support the students' all-around development. One of her proudest projects was guiding her students to create collage poems—a creative mix of Yunnan's literature and art. Through the project, the students discovered the beauty of the subject, and started seeing the world differently.

Wang also helped students with difficulties in their life. A student surnamed Zhou recently fell ill. Wang visited her at the hospital and learned about her family's struggles—her father passed away and her mother now supports two daughters alone by running a small shop. Since then she has quietly offered companionship (陪伴) and encouragement whenever possible.

"And here, I found that the warmth goes both ways. The more I gave, the more I got. That's the real power of volunteer teaching," Wang said. After her one-year volunteer work, Wang will soon begin graduate studies in international Chinese language education. She hopes to teach Chinese and spread Chinese culture overseas after graduation.

Because of modern medicine, millions of people now live longer, healthier lives, and we are developing new ways to fight diseases (疾病) all the time. 

In the past, most people worked on their feet and moved their bodies all day, so they had lots of exercise.  Today, many people sit in front of a computer all day at work, and often eat a lot of sweet foods, or foods that are made in factories. This can be a big danger to their health.

The disease that causes most deaths in the world today—three in every ten—is heart disease. But many of these deaths need not happen, and are caused because people have not exercised or eaten well enough. Not exercising, or eating unhealthy food, can sometimes cause another dangerous disease-diabetes (糖尿病).  In the last twenty years, there has been a big rise in the number of deaths from diabetes.

Smoking is another very big health problem and it causes more than seven million deaths a year. There are lots of very dangerous chemicals in cigarettes (香烟), so smokers can get many diseases. Around the world, fewer people smoke today than twenty years ago, but there were still more than 1.2 billion smokers in 2025.  Nearly half of all the children in the world are taking cigarette smoke into their bodies every day because they have to spend time near people who smoke.

 When people sit for too long in front of a computer they can get problems with their eyes, arms, necks, and backs. And when they use computers and cell phones at night, it is often more difficult for them to sleep. Some scientists also think that cell phones may cause health problems because of a kind of energy which they produce called radiation (辐射).

Imagine growing fuel (燃料) on trees or getting it from rubbish. Imagine cars that run on air or produce water, not pollution! All around the world, people are making surprising new fuels.

Biogas is made from plants or natural waste by living things called bacteria (细菌). People can use animal and food waste to make biogas. Bacteria break the waste down in a special container (容器), and the gas (气体) is used for cooking and lights. Just one kilogram of waste produces enough biogas to make a light work for four hours. In Sweden, they even make biogas for cars from toilet waste!

Biofuels are made from fuels that grow. It is great because we make it from the waste parts of plants that we already grow for food. The newest biofuels are made from very small living things called algae (藻类). Algae produce more energy than other biofuels, and they can grow in places where we do not grow food, like seas and wasteland. In Brazil, cars and buses have used bioethanol for years.

The cleanest fuel is hydrogen (氢). When hydrogen burns, it just makes water, but this gas is difficult to produce. In 2010, engineers invented a machine which uses energy from the sun to make hydrogen. Other people are trying to use bacteria to make it. These "clean" ways of making hydrogen are still very new. If they become cheaper, we may all drive hydrogen cars in the future.

Every year, scientists are inventing new ways to make super fuels from the things around us. Which energy technologies will we use most in the future? We do not know the answer to this question exactly. But we do know that we are starting to build a future without fossil fuels.
